Seven films still in contention for makeup Oscar

January 11, 2010 |  4:28 pm

Photo_12_hires Will the prawn take home the Oscar this year? The displaced aliens of "District 9" are among the makeup effects in contention for that category at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. The complete list is as follows:

"District 9"

"Il Divo"

"The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"

"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian"

"The Road"

"Star Trek"

"The Young Victoria"

It's interesting to note that in the face of CGI's dominance, brick and mortar makeup effects retain a level of respect at the Oscars; it's still a relatively new category, having been established in '81 after complaints were levied at the academy for not honoring Christopher Tucker's design for "The Elephant Man" in 1980. So it's a pleasure to see that such CGI-heavy pictures as "District," "Trek" and "Smithsonian" still relying on the talent of makeup artists to help bring fantastical elements to life.

The question is, though: Which of these will win the Oscar? You know the drill: Nominations are announced Feb. 2, and the ceremony itself is March 7.
