Cinema Audio Society nominees announced

“Avatar,” “District 9,” “The Hurt Locker,” Star Trek” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” were nominated Wednesday for the Cinema Audio Society’s 46th CAS Awards for outstanding achievement in sound mixing.

Nominations were also handed out in several television categories including TV movies and miniseries for the two-hour “Broken” episode of “House”; “Endgame”; “Grey Gardens”; “Into the Storm”; and “Taking Chance.”

Vying in the TV series category are the episode “10 p.m. to 11 p.m.” of “24”; “Daybreak, Part 2” of “Battlestar Gallactica”; “Boom Crunch” of “Desperate Housewives”; “Wheels” of “Glee”; and “Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency” of “Mad Men.”

Competing in nonfiction, variety or music series or specials are “Stay Focused and Die” of “Deadliest Catch”; Episode 1 of “The National Parks”; the “Extreme Ice” installment of “Nova”; “The Metropolitan Opening Night Gala Starring Renee Fleming”; and “Woodstock: Then and Now.”

Nominated for DVD original programming are “Battlestar Galactica’s The Plan”; “Caprica”; “Famly Guy: Something, Something, Something Dark Side”; “Into the Blue: The Reef”; and “Monsters vs. Aliens: Bob’s Big Break.”

This year’s recipient of the CAS Career Achievement Award is re-recording mixing/sound designer Randy Thom, director of sound design at Skywalker Sound.

The awards will be presented Feb. 27 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.
