Guerrero talks about his new 'do

June 24, 2009 | 11:30 pm

Vladimir Guerrero didn't directly come out and say he clipped his dreadlocks to break his prolonged power slump, but it was easy to get that impression listening to him tonight after he hit his first homer since April 12 during the Angels' 11-3 victory over Colorado at Angel Stadium.

"It's been three years growing that," he said of his hair through interpreter Jose Mota. "I just woke up yesterday and said, 'Let's do something different.' "

The change worked a day later against the Rockies. Guerrero homered, doubled and drove in three runs. He said he lowered his hands after watching videos of his at-bats and said it was "nice" to get the pair of extra-base hits.

Guerrero said being relegated to designated hitter in the wake of his torn chest muscle made his slump harder to deal with because he couldn't be distracted by the responsibilities of playing right field.

"A lot of times it's good to be able to think about something else," he said. "But there's no excuse" for the slump. Guerrero recently begin throwing again and Manager Mike Scioscia said he was closing in on being able to resume playing in the outfield.
