Guerrero has torn pectoral muscle; will be out for at least a month
MINNEAPOLIS -- Vladimir Guerrero was diagnosed today with a torn pectoral muscle in his chest, an injury that sent the Angels slugger to the disabled list and will sideline him for at least a month and probably longer. A roster addition will be announced after tonight's game against the Minnesota Twins.
"Obviously, short of Vlad needing surgery, this is a big blow," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "We'll see how he progresses. He'll be re-evaluated in a month, and we'll see where he is."
It's doubtful Guerrero will be able to return to right field this season, but the Angels are optimistic he will be able to return as a designated hitter at some point. Before leaving the team Thursday to return to Southern California to be examined, Guerrero, who is batting .250 with one homer and three runs batted in, said the injury does not affect his swing.
Scioscia inserted utility infielder Maicer Izturis into the third spot in the batting order as designated hitter in tonight's lineup, giving the Angels more of a situational look in hopes of setting the table for Bobby Abreu, Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales. Scioscia said reserve outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. would also get more playing time.
