Trojan trivia time

Pete_carroll USC heads to the Farm this weekend seeking revenge against the team that knocked the Trojans out of the national title hunt last year. Stanford achieved arguably the biggest upset in college history (certainly the largest by Las Vegas standards) and ended USC's Coliseum winning streak with a 24-23 victory.

What are the odds the Cardinal can do it again? Not very good. The Trojans are favored by 23 points on some of the online gambling sites, and tomorrow's Vegas number may be similar. Of course, they were a 41-point favorite last time around.

So when was the last time somebody beat USC two years in a row?

The answer is after the jump ...

Answer: Kansas State beat USC, 10-6, in 2001 and 27-20 in 2002. That's the only time it's happened in consecutive years within the Pete Carroll era.

Stanford was the last Pac-10 team to do it, along with Oregon, by beating Paul Hackett's Trojans in 2000 and Carroll's in 2001. In fact, the Cardinal and Notre Dame had a three-year winning streak from 1999 to 2001, and Oregon had a four year winning streak from 1998 to 2001.

Hard to imagine anybody doing that nowadays, no?

That Oregon streak was brutal since the games were painfully close (and for a while the scheduling hiccups of the 11-game season caused us to play at Oregon for several years in a row) --the toughest was the 1999 game were Palmer got knocked out for the season.

Both K-State games were also bad, but the 2001 game was especially painful... I was in the crowd and it was a slow, boring loss.

That Stanford game has to be the most over-hyped upset ever. ‘SC just came off a hard fought win up in Washington where they lost two linemen in one play - everyone seems to forget that. Add to the grief was Booty's broken finger. If there is anything to be "upset" about it was the coach’s decision not to put in Sanchez (or anyone else for that matter). There is not a team in the country that could sustain those kinds of injuries and hope to win. That being said look for the Trojans to come out very aggressively on this game as they want redemption - no matter what the reasons.
