Losses to unranked teams: USC vs. Florida
With four major upset losses in 2 1/2 seasons, it's understandable why USC is getting a bad rap for dropping the ball when it's least expected. Compare the Trojans' losses to unranked opponents with another contemporary heavyweight, Florida:
| Year | USC | Florida |
| 2008 | Oregon State | Ole Miss |
| 2007 | Stanford | Auburn |
| 2006 | Oregon State, UCLA | |
| 2005 | South Carolina | |
| 2004 | Mississippi State | |
| 2003 | Cal | Ole Miss |
| 2002 | Ole Miss | |
Notice that Florida has more losses to unranked opponents since 2002, but it's been less noticeable because they're spread out. Also note that Urban Meyer took over the Gators in 2005.
