Oooofah
After the Trojan's abominable 56-46 loss to UCLA, maybe Tim Floyd wouldn't mind coaching the Flint Tropics instead. This debacle was covered from almost every angle, so you'll hear about pretty much everything in the MSM.
I was at a funeral yesterday, and the Trojans were dressed for one today. As part of the grieving process, here's what USC fans will have to go through (with Kubler-Ross quotes from Wikipedia).
- Denial: "It can't be happening." -- USC's top two players, O.J. Mayo and Davon Jefferson, each scored 4 points in the game. In front of O.J.'s mother, no less.
- Anger: "Why me? It's not fair." -- Four of USC's starters played the entire 40 minutes. Jefferson was the exception, getting 8 minutes of sub time from Keith Wilkinson.
- Bargaining: "Just let me live to see my children graduate." -- Daniel Hackett was telling people after the game that he hopes to be back in 20 days.
- Depression: "I'm so sad, why bother with anything?" -- Three starters (Mayo, Jefferson and Johnson) combined for as many points as Mayo had turnovers (10).
- Acceptance: "It's going to be OK." -- It was hard to coax something positive out of USC's players in the locker room, but Mayo could point to one thing. "The offensive end didn't really dictate the way we played defense. We played really hard on defense and showed a lot of heart."
At least it was a good weekend for the Trojans in a number of other sports, including victories over the Bruins in women's hoops and swimming. The Lexus Gauntlet is all but wrapped up.

By the numbers, it seems that Floyd might have been using the game to get Angelo used to playing the point, and the guys conditioned for a run through the championships and March Madness.

Devon should learn to keep his mouth shut. A must win game to keep in the hunt, against the best team in the conference (let alone the cross time rival), and the LAST thing needed is trash talking fodder from a second rate player.
Result: 4 points for Devon. Same for OJ.
This is not the way to get your name in the paper.

Danny is right that Devon who cannot keep his typical SC mouth shut is a big reason. How can the top two players combined to have more turnovers than points? And they or SC supposed to step up to prove themselves worthy of NCAA madness.
I am afraid that they are like the SC team - all hype and no show when it's the time, unlike the other time they lost to.
Hopefully, they will recover but doesn't look good. Looks like there's nothing to cheer for basketball--AGAIN.
