Cindy Crawford's daughter lands Young Versace campaign

KaiaGerberYoungVersace

Like mother, like daughter. Supermodel Cindy Crawford's 10-year-old daughter Kaia Gerber is the face of Young Versace's inaugural campaign. The kid's line (ages 0 through 12) will feature signature Versace details such as Medusa heads, gold studding and an overall edgy, rock 'n' roll vibe. It debuts this spring.

Crawford famously modeled for the Italian house during the early 1990s and was on set to watch her daughter step in front of the lens of fashion industry heavies -- photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

"I'm so thrilled that Kaia was chosen to be part of the first Young Versace campaign," said Cindy Crawford in a news statement. "I have so many fond memories of the times I spent with Gianni and Donatella."

Though Gerber looks far older than 10 in the ad, at least it's tastefully done (considering all the controversy over 10-year-old Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau appearing in French Vogue last year) and she certainly seems to have been blessed with her mom's gorgeous hair.

[Updated] Fashion News: Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep gussy up for Kennedy Center Honors

Kennedy Center Honors

Black seemed to be the color of the evening at Sunday's Kennedy Center Honors (which is to be broadcast on CBS on Dec. 27). Honorees Meryl Streep, jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Neil Diamond all wore Washington's favorite formal shade, as did President Obama and numerous famous attendees such as Anne Hathaway, Sutton Foster, Patti LuPone, Sarah Jessica Parker, Andrea Mitchell, Jessye Norman and Elmo.

It's called the lipstick effect. Say you covet a Chanel suit, but can't afford it. Buying a Chanel lipstick gives you an affordable little taste of Chanel glamour. Maybe that's why makeup sales are up this year, as my colleage Tiffany Hsu reported on Saturday. Over the first 10 months of the year, unit sales were up 5% and dollar sales were up in all categories of makeup. And I predict that by the end of the year those figures will be even higher. I already know of some Smashbox kits and Sephora coupons going into stockings of some of those dear to me. [Los Angeles Times]

J.J. Abrams told a star-studded group attending Thursday's 21st annual Beat the Odds Awards benefit for the California branch of the Children's Defense Fund that he is "single-handedly bringing back the skinny tie." But not so. "My tie is skinnier," rejoined Zachery Quinto (Mr. Spock in the most recent "Star Trek" movie). And thus may a trend begin. [A previous version of this post incorrectly said the event happend Friday.]  [Society News LA]

If you missed out on the Versace for H&M collection, you may have a second chance. Some of the items are back in stores as customers return things they may have bought in the frenzy but later realized didn't quite work (for whatever reason). [Fashionista]

The Council of Fashion Designers of America is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a show at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. More than 100 items will be shown by designers such as Bill Blass, Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez and Thom Browne. The show is scheduled Feb. 10-April 20. [The Cut]

An initial public offering of stock in Michael Kors values the firm at $3.6 billion, and it would give the designer himself $111 million. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Fashion News: Lady Gaga's new scent will not smell like blood

Lady Gaga says her new perfume will be based in molecules from her own blood, but won't smell like itRemember reports earlier this year that the new perfume Lady Gaga has in development with Coty will smell like blood? It turns out the perfume, which is expected early next year, is based on molecules of her own blood, "so it's a sense of having me on your skin," she says now. "Actually the perfume smells like an expensive hooker." [Daily Mail]

Lady Gaga's Workshop, a creative collaboration involving the entertainer, fashion designer Nicola Formichetti and others, opened at Barney's New York at 11:59 p.m. Monday. It features eight shops that take up the fifth floor of the Manhattan flagship, offering lots of Gaga-inspired gift items. Net-a-porter has begun selling replicas of the cowl-necked Alexander McQueen gown bridesmaid Pippa Middleton wore at the royal wedding of her sister Kate and Prince William back in April. It's available on the online retailer's British site for $3,100. It's not on the U.S. site at present, but I did find a street-length red dress in a similar style (for $1,680). [Telegraph] [Catwalk Queen] [People]

Fashion News: Rules for shopping the Versace for H&M collection

Versace for H&MVersace's capsule collection for H&M  -- enthusiastically reviewed by Times' fashion critic Booth Moore -- goes on sale this week: Thursday in the U.K. and Saturday in the U.S. and Canada. H&M has some rules for shoppers that should stave off the chaos that engulfed Target during its Missoni launch. The first 280 people in line to shop the women's collection will be issued bracelets giving them specific times to shop, and only 20 people will be allowed in at one time. They'll have 15 minutes to shop. After the first 280 have their chance, the doors will open to all. There are also some limits on how much a single customer can buy. In the U.S., the shopping is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.  [Fashionista]

Meanwhile, on the other end of the fashion continuum, Versace is planning to do a couture show in January, its first in eight years. [The Cut]

Alice Temperley has dressed both Middleton sisters and considers in a pleasure, as she tells instyle.com: “They’re the most humble, down-to-earth people I’ve ever dressed. They’re completely easy and wonderful to work with, and they look great in the clothes. They know exactly what they like.” Temperley shared her thoughts about the Duchess of Cambridge and her sister Pippa at a party for "True British," a book in honor of the 10-year anniversary of her label. We all know some people are passionate about shoes --- and shoe sales. Those passions took a turn to violence Tuesday, when police reportedly arrested several people in an unruly crowd waiting for a  Salvatore Ferragamo sample sale in Secaucus, N.J. [Racked]

Another shoe brand people are passionate about is Jimmy Choo, and word comes this week that co-founder and chief creative officer Tamara Mellon and Chief Executive Joshua Shulman have both announced that they are leaving the company, which was purchased by luxury group Labelux this year. Mellon says she plans to start her own lifestyle brand. [WWD] (Subscription required)

Urban Outfitters Inc. (which owns Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie, among others) attributes a fourth straight quarter of losses in part to some of the products it sells. Specifically, to tops. Other items are selling fine, but tops are lagging. "We need more compelling product," company CEO Glen Senk is quoted as saying. "And we're getting it." [WWD]

Fashion News: Miranda Kerr previews Victoria's Secret $2.5-million bra [Updated]

Miranda KerrVictoria's Secret angel Miranda Kerr gave a preview of the handmade, $2.5-million bra that she will wear during next month's Victoria's Secret catwalk extravaganza. The bra (shown on a mannequin -- most people will have to wait until the show, slated to air Nov. 29 on CBS, to see Kerr model it) reportedly took London Jewelers in Long Island, NY 500 hours to hand-sew on 3,400 gems -- including  diamonds, pearls, citrines and aquamarines. It also has a tassel centerpiece adorned with two 8-carat white diamonds and two yellow 14-carat diamonds. [Telegraph] [Updated 11:24 a.m. Oct.21 to correct error that said a London jeweler made the bra.]

Fashionable First Lady Michelle Obama explained her wardrobe philosophy: “I have to wear what I love,” she said. “I have to feel good in it. My day-to-day wardrobe choices are very practical. I’m like, ‘What’s the temperature?’ ‘Am I going to be sitting in the grass?’ ‘Will I be playing with kids?’ ‘Can I sit on the floor?'" [People]

Versace for H&M: the review

VERSACECAMPAIGN
The latest cheap chic collaboration, Versace for H&M, may be the best Versace collection to come along in years -- more Gianni than Donatella, more South Beach than Milano.

The collection hits stores Nov. 17, and you can bet there is going to be a stampede. I love the bright baroque patterns and sexy body-conscious cuts, both signatures of the Versace brand's heyday in the 1980s and '90s. The mixed tropical prints on skintight pants and minidresses are right on trend for spring. (Until the weather warms, shoppers may have to rock their Versace for H&M on the dance floor instead of the street.)

The collection is a greatest hits retrospective of sorts, with the slinky black gown with gold hardware  ($149) evoking Gianni's famous safety pin dress from 1994, made famous by Elizabeth Hurley.

Collage1

The shrunken studded leather biker jacket looks as if it has a great fit, and I love the silk miniskirt with Versace's iconic Greek key motif on the hem.  I will have to see it in person, but from the photos the leather seems as if it would be buttery soft, which is amazing for the price ($299 for the leather jacket and minidress).

Leathercollage
The accessories are pretty fun, including chunky bracelets and chokers, sculpted flower rings, silk scarves and purses with heavy chain handles and palm tree prints.

Versacebag

Oh yeah, and there's some men's stuff too --including a black-and-white Op Art print shirt and matching pants that are nothing short of amazing -- for the guy who dares to wear!

Will the collection be as big a seller as Lanvin for H&M in 2010? Possibly. But Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz's designs were more forgiving. H&M makes clothes for the masses, and not all the masses have the bodies for body-con.

Milan Fashion Week: Versace and the return of sartorial swagger

Versace1

Donatella Versace sent a colorful collection down the catwalk on Monday night, in front of a star-studded audience in the courtyard of the Versace palazzo on Via Gesu.

The silhouette for the season hearkened to the Versace of yesteryear, strong at the shoulders with widened lapels, nipped in slightly at the waist and wider again at the hip. Similarly, trousers and shorts were tight at the waist and flaring generously at mid-thigh. (There were even a few neckties that looked like they could have been at least three skinny ties wide.)

Versacemain

Fabrics favored wool/lined blends, washed silks and laser-cut cotton, and the color palette was one of the brightest I've seen on a Versace men's runway in many a season -- an explosion of bold reds, blues, and yellows mixed in with less vivid -- but equally as eye-catching -- pinks, oranges, caramel browns and grays.

Another nod to the past was the season's recurring motif for the season, a baroque-inspired print from the Versace archives (our fashion critic Booth Moore noted Versace had gone for baroque for the women's fall and winter 2011 runway collection), given a modern tweak and used on silk shirts, trousers, and thick terrycloth robes lined with silk.

Versacemain2

Maybe it was the strong shoulder, the over-the-top, in-your-face prints, or the trousers festooned with so many buckles down the side of the leg they resembled mariachi pants, but there was a palpable sense of confidence -- no, make that swagger -- about the collection that had been missing as of late.

Maybe Donatella's got her menswear groove back again -- or maybe it was the fact that the next morning H&M would announce that Donatella Versace has collaborated with the fast-fashion retailer on a collection -- including men's, women's and home -- that also mines the Versace heritage. (That collection will hit American H&M stores on Nov. 19.) Whatever the reason, it's good to have it back.

Versacemain3

Among the famous faces in the front row for the show were actors Zachary Quinto ("Star Trek"), Darren Chris ("Glee"), Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl") as well as professional basketball players Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony. At one point during the runway show, Wade could be seen excitedly pointing out a particular catwalk look to his stylist Calyann Barnett, who was seated in the row behind him.

After the show I caught up with the New York Knicks' Anthony (dressed in a dark Versace suit and sporting a gray Lanvin flower boutonniere in his lapel), who told me he'd just watched his first-ever runway show. Asked his impression, he answered in a single word: "Unbelievable."

But the stylish NBA star, who attended the show with a gray Lanvin boutonniere tucked into his lapel, had a few more words when I asked if he'd seen anything on the spring and summer 2012 runway he could envision adding to his own wardrobe.

"Oh yeah," he said. "There were some jackets -- a couple of those red ones, a couple of those yellow ones and there was a gold jacket I liked too."

It's probably a good thing he didn't mention the skintight trousers with multiple buckles running down the length of the leg from hip to ankle. I counted about 15 buckles for the version worn by the runway model, and making a Carmelo-sized custom pair of the knickers would not only nearly double the buckles, but give him a repetitive motion injury from the act of donning and doffing his knickers.

Your Morning Fashion and Beauty Report: Lady Gaga wears Versace. Charlene Wittstock talks fashion. Heidi Klum shines.

Acharlene There's another royal wedding coming up this summer when Monaco's Prince Albert marries former Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock on July 1. Wittstock is more open about talking fashion than Kate Middleton was before her. For instance, we already know that her wedding gown was designed by Giorgio Armani. whereas Middleton's dress designer was top secret until the big day. She also admits to some qualms about dressing the part of a princess. “Finding my fashion feet has certainly been the biggest challenge,” she says. Luckily she's had help, from the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Michael Kors and is considering starting a Monaco Fashion Week. [Vogue]

In the late 1970s, famed British photographer Brian Duffy burned bundles of negatives of his work from the previous decades. Milan Fashion Week: The top shows and takeaways

Topmain1

The big news in Milan was the continued interest in updating classic couture shapes with unusual colors, fabrications and surface embellishments.

We saw it done best at Jil Sander, where designer Raf Simons made outsize drop-shoulder coats, tunics and dresses with martingale belts look completely modern, by showing them with sleek, skiwear-inspired knits and stirrup pants.

Topmain2

At Bottega Veneta, Tomas Maier used ladylike, 1960s-inspired coats and sleeveless shift dresses as canvases for incredible work with layers of lace and print.

Topmainveralp

The 1960s trend took a mod turn at Versace, Alberta Ferretti and most notably at Prada, where coats and coatdresses with low-slung belts came in solids, windowpane checks, decorated with contrast piping, shag fur or silver-dollar sized paillettes.

Topmainmarni

Fashion's love affair with fur is still going strong. Marni's Consuelo Castiglione was the most inventive with fur, showing a modern-looking, zip-front mink blouson jacket, a full-length fur coat sheared into a diamond pattern, and a stiff, molded black leather jacket with a broadtail hem.

Topmain5

Also carrying over from spring, vivid color, seen most clearly at Gucci. Forest green, rust, mustard yellow, peach and teal blue were all hot hues, used to spectacular effect in Fendi's collection of arty, English country chic.

As for accessories, the Mary Jane with a chunky heel is the must-have. And why carry just one bag when you can carry two?

Now onto Paris. But not before naming the top five collections out of Milan: Bottega Veneta. Fendi, Marni, Prada and Jil Sander.
