'Advanced Style' book features street fashion of the over-60 set

"Advanced Style"
For all those who are sick and tired of seeing style and fashion presented solely as a young woman’s game, behold "Advanced Style."

Out Tuesday from powerHouse Books, this collection of street fashion photographs of the over-60 set is a joy to look at.

Although very few of the subjects photographed on the street of New York City actually reveal how old they are, they do offer lessons in confidence and style that women of all ages will appreciate, which is exactly why Ari Seth Cohen started Advanced Style, the blog that inspired the book.

Among the stylish portraits in the book is the elegant and refined Rose, age 100, (pictured above left) in a paisley caftan, Hermes belt and oversized beads, who believes, "If everyone is wearing it, then it’s not for me." Alice, posing in a men’s tweed jacket, jodphurs, boots, fingerless gloves and a silk scarf, says, "Fie on women in sneakers and sweats." Then there’s Debra (above middle) in electric blue sunglasses and brocade pants, who approaches getting dressed like an art project and says, "Tomorrow is another day and another look."AS_cvr

Cohen combs the entire city looking for elder style on the street. "It’s fun to hang out outside the Carlysle Hotel," where he snapped the photo of Elaine Stritch wearing one of her signature menswear-inspired looks. "But I don’t spend too much time on the Upper East Side because a lot of the women there have had a lot of plastic surgery."

"Advanced Style" is about embracing your age, not fighting it, he says. "In society, women are told to back down from fashion as they get older, and they become invisible. I got an email from one woman who said her grandkids were embarrassed by the way she dresses.... She showed them my blog, and they changed their minds."

He has learned that there really is no such thing as age-appropriate dressing. The book features its fair share of traditional houndstooth suits, silk scarves and sensible shoes, but it also has women in artsy hats and colorful turbans.

"Some women think fashion should be more proper, others don’t care at all. If someone is comfortable and confident, that’s what matters," Cohen says. "I like to have a mix of eccentric and elegant in the blog and book, because I’m attracted to both extremes."

Style L.A.: What are you wearing? Reader photo, color blocking

Salvador CamarenaCountless models were seen wearing  bright colors during the spring-summer 2011 runway shows. The color-blocking trend was big, with labels like Marni sending their models down the runway in color-blocked tops, shorts and caps.

The color-blocked look may have been big for spring, but it's still making a splash for summer as seen in this reader photo of stylist Salvador Camarena.

"I decided I wanted to participate in the colorblocking trend," wrote Camarena, who is seen on his way to a stylist gig just outside of Los Feliz. "I'm glad I did because it makes me instantly happy."

Style L.A.: What are you wearing? Reader photo of the week, it's all about the maxi

UgcThink you need an uber-short mini to get ready for summer? Think again. The maxi skirt is still on its full fledged '70s comeback after making multiple appearances on the runways last fall. This week's featured reader photo shows fashion blogger Jan Lach from the blog Fashion Diplomacy wearing a lightweight, summer-friendly version of the maxi trend.

Lach's friend, fashion photographer Aileen Tieu, took this photo after a walk through the park. Lach's flowy skirt and brown belt are from Asos, her print top is from Forever 21 and her shoes are Dolce Vita from Shopbop.

Lach says her style philosophy is laid back. She likes to incorporate different pieces to ensure that her finished look appears complete.

"My style changes according to my mood," wrote Lach in an email. "Because of these constant changes, my creativity is always at work."

This week's feature reader photo was uploaded by reader "pnatjaime2219." Pictured is 20-year-old Sarah Garcia, wearing a thrifted dress, fishnet tights and her mother's purse.

The floral-print dress is a great thrift store find and the contrast with the punky fishnets gives her otherwise girlie summer dress some edge. Garcia's long necklace is the perfect accessory and wearing her mom's cross-body bag is the best kind of vintage.

Style L.A.: What are you wearing? Reader photo of the week: color flight

ColorThere is something about the warmth of the sun that makes you want to ditch the drab tones of winter and pull out lots of playful bright colors. Lucky for us the sun has finally returned to Los Angeles and it's the perfect time to wear a little, or a lot of color.

This week's feature reader photo of the week shows Sydne Summer, founder and editor of the fashion blog Thinkthrufashion.com in a color-block dress and heels at the 7 for All Mankind Aviator party at the Sunset Tower Hotel.

"I've been into the color-block trend this month and this shift dress was perfect to go to a fashion event then meet a date later for drinks," wrote Summer.

Summer's dress is from H&M, her shoes are Report peep toes and accessories include SEAH Watches Destiny bracelet and an Energy Muse Manifestation bracelet.

Style L.A.: What are you wearing? Reader photo of the week: leopard love

UgcThis week's featured reader photo was uploaded by fashionista "PursuitofShoes." She's rocking the army green trend with her military-inspired pants, plain white tee, sweater and comfy black scarf at a park in Burbank. She vamps up her casual outfit for a stroll in the park with a pair of Colin Stuart leopard platform pumps.

"Army green and leopard make the perfect match for a winter/spring wardrobe!" wrote PursuitofShoes.

A little splash of animal print adds a flirty touch to any outfit. If you ever find yourself in a wardrobe rutt, slip on some leopard pumps, wrap a cheetah print scarf around your neck or grab a zebra clutch to spice things up.

Style L.A.: What are you wearing? Reader photo of the week, spring is here

UgcSpring has arrived with this week's reader photo of the week, uploaded by Rei Fernandez from the fashion blog The Common Grounds.

Fernandez is ready for the unpredictable weather spring brings with plenty of layers in a light denim jacket from the Gap, varsity cardigan by BDG, white button-down by the Gap and slim fit khakis by Old Navy. His "Lumber Up" boots by Eastland are perfect for splashing through April showers or strolling on a sunny day.

"This photo was taken from a small photo shoot I had recently for my blog post where I discussed the transition from winter into spring," wrote Fernandez. "We're all excited for the warmer weather that spring brings, but might not come right away."
