SAG Awards: Coral beauty rules the red carpet

Emilybluntgretchenmol
Coral is a popular color for spring and on Sunday night's red carpet we received a sneak peek of how it works in makeup.

Emily Blunt, Gretchen Mol and Emma Stone were all done up in a palette of peach and coral and it looked fresh, spring-y and provided an effervescent alternative to the dramatic red lip or smoky eye.

Blunt's makeup artist Jenn Streicher was inspired by the vibrant green of the actress' Oscar de la Renta gown. "I usually focus on her eyes," says Streicher. "But this time we went for the lips."

The makeup artist used a pink-coral hue by Tom Ford called Flamingo. She kept the eyes fairly simple, just adding a lot of lashes, Dior deep brown eye liner and a sweep of pearly pink eye shadows (Chanel Quad #34 Eclosion and #92 Rose de Mai) across her lids.

Streicher played up the cheeks with a coral shade -- YSL powder #2.

"I knew it would be warm outside," she says "And I wanted to keep the look fresh and spring-y."

Mol's makeup also encompassed the trendy spring hue. Her makeup artist Daniel Martin was inspired by the film "In the Mood for Love" which meant defined eyes and a pop of peach on the cheeks along with a fresh coral lip to bring some contrast to her white L'Wren Scott gown.

Her blush was Lancome's Blush Subtil in Nectar Riche and the lip color was Lancome's Rouge in Love in Corail in Love.

Mol's eyes were defined with Lancome's new Liner Design in Black Fishnet and 5 Pan Palette in Sunset Fling.

SAG Awards: Rose Byrne's '70s-inspired hair

Rosehair
Rose Byrne's heavily embellished, ivory Elie Saab jumpsuit was topped off with what her hair stylist Harry Josh calls " '70s-inspired with a modern twist. Think Michelle Pfeiffer in 'Scarface' meets a modern-day Anna Wintour."

To get a bob this sleek and straight, he first sprayed Byrne's wet hair at the roots with a volumizing spray (John Frieda Full Repair Lift Foam) for a weightless lift. "I needed to get a lot of lift at the roots," says Josh.  "Without that, the look would just fall flat."

Because the actress' new haircut is so blunt, Josh had to ensure the end result be super-smooth, so he applied a small amount of John Frieda Full Repair Perfect Ends Deep Infusion to the ends.

Using a natural bristle brush, he then blow-dried the hair section by section, angling the dryer in a down to get maximum shine.

And for that final, perfect Anna Wintour bob effect, Josh put Velcro curlers into the hair so the ends would curl under slightly and the volume at the roots would stay locked in.

It was fun to see so many ladies taking risks on the red carpet Sunday night. Emma Stone's Alexander McQueen gown was a total knockout because of its mid-calf length -- unlike anything else out there. Also loved Michelle Williams' Valentino gown -- a red dress with the twist of a one-shoulder bodice and short, red lace sleeves. Zoe Saldana, who is always a risk taker, totally rocked it in a white Givenchy gown with a spiky jeweled neckline. Just fabulous. And after some deliberation, I've decided I'm on board with Rose Byrne's white Elie Saab jumpsuit. Her inspiration was 1970s "Scarface," and with the hair, it worked in a kooky chic way. And that's what the red carpet needs more of: kooky chic.

Jewelry at the SAG Awards
The days of just piling on the diamonds are over. The jewelry on the red carpet at the SAGs is really unique and different. I love Mayim Bialik's Nini Jewels frog bracelet, Kyra Sedgwick's yellow gold twisted bracelet and Sofia Vergara's amethyst cuff and earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. But Giuliana Rancic's sculptural, folded neck-piece takes the cake. It's so chic.

Kaleyariel

I’m loving the more natural-looking hairstyles on the red carpet, particularly the goddess-y hair braids on Kaley Cuoco, Ariel Winter, Dianna Agron and Mayim Bialik. Could be the night’s biggest hair trend.

Paledresses

The SAG Awards red carpet is on, let the shilling begin! Looks like pale shades are coming on strong, and they look fresh and smart on this 75-degree day. Octavia Spencer is wearing an opal gray Tadashi Shoji gown with a draped front, and Julianna Margulies is in a beautiful embroidered dove gray Calvin Klein gown. (Margulies’ Marcy Miller earrings are quite striking too. Opals, maybe?) Armie Hammer’s wife Elizabeth Chambers’ buttery yellow chiffon Gucci gown looks sleek and sexy, but I’m not sure about Rose Byrne’s buttery lace Elie Saab jumpsuit. She said she was inspired by the whole 1970s “Scarface” vibe. Viola Davis looks like a Roman goddess in cream Marchesa with gold embroidery on the bodice.

There is a bonus to wearing a pale shade on a hot L.A. day though. No sweat stains.

SAG Awards: Hilary Swank’s tousled sex-kitten hair

Swank
Hilary Swank's Bond girl-inspired hairstyle was one of her best, as it softened up the actress' usually  strong, severe look.

Her hair stylist, Robert Vetica, was inspired by the 1960s look of Ursula Andress, and the volume and undulating curls did not disappoint.

Vetica used all Moroccanoil hair products and started by blow-drying Swank’s hair using Moroccanoil Treatment serum to instantly condition and bring any dry ends back to life and make her hair easier to style.

After the hair was dried, he did a full head set by curling 1-inch by 1-inch sections of hair, starting at the nape of the neck then pinned each to the head. “These were real full-base curls, not spiral curls,” says Vetica. He continued section by section until reaching the crown, and then finished the sides and top of the head.

He gave the set a good spray of Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray and let it sit for 20 minutes to ensure an even longer-lasting style, then gave it a good brushing and applied a small amount of Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream for added body.

Finally, Vetica gave Swank’s hair a good backcombing at the root, sprayed it again and ran his fingers through the hair to loosen it up. He backcombed more at the crown, gave it another quick spray and lightly brushed over the top to smooth and finish.

SAG Awards: Angie Harmon’s soft pink glow

CAUSRGORCAA26WOSCALUF49XCAPZ01OVCAXGTUZBCAC1ZEDLCACP1IDQCA3E060VCA06DFNVCA4HNFD7CA1QL2YOCAP21MVVCAEDEUBSCARMTTQXCADMD4TCCA2QUGOCCA1OEGISCA1O1U3MCA4QFSHM

To set off Angie Harmon's fluffy Monique Lhuillier gown, her makeup artist Spencer Barnes worked from a palette of pink, lavender and violet.

“I wanted to play up and define her eyes and balance soft pinks with her olive skin and chocolate eyes,” says Barnes. “For her eyes, I chose colors to play off the pink in her dress."

He started with Nars Sheer Glow foundation and Desire blush, then he swept Nouveau Monde eye shadow, also from Nars and new for spring 2011, across her eyelids and defined the eyes with Black Moon eyeliner pencil.

Harmon’s lips were given their soft pink color with Angelika lip gloss (also new for spring 2011). Her décolleté and shoulders glowed with Copacabana Illuminator, in order to warm up her arms and upper body so she didn’t fade away in the pale pink gown.
