NYFW Fall 2012: Rachel Zoe's wintry rock goddesses

Rachelcollage

Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful were in the house, at least in spirit, at stylist-turned-designer and would-be media mogul Rachel Zoe's Fall 2012 runway show, inspired by the London rock 'n' roll scene of the late 1960s. The clothes balanced the glam and the wearable, with all the Hollywood entrance-making maxidresses and shaggy faux furs that fans have come to expect from Zoe, alongside flared trouser suits and velvet tuxedos, gaucho jeans and melange sweater dresses.

This season, Zoe introduced jewelry (lots of chunky chain necklaces, lariats and bangles with tassel charms) and cold weather accessories (Russian style faux fur hats and long suede gloves) to round out the brand, which is priced to sell, with most of the clothing in the $250 to $550 range.

Missoni family, Iman receive Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Awards

Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Iman Missoni
The stage was barely big enough to hold all of the members of the Missoni family who traveled from Italy to Beverly Hills to receive the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award on Sunday night. It was the first time the honor has been bestowed on an entire family.

Photo Gallery: Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Awards

On hand to celebrate were Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, the family patriarch and matriarch, who founded the knitwear empire nearly 60 years ago; their daughter Angela Missoni, who designs the collection; and Angela's two brothers Vittorio and Luca, who run the business.

The third generation was well represented too. It included Margherita Missoni, star of the recent Missoni for Target commercial, who is now designing for the company in Milan; Ottavio Jr., who is learning the ropes of production; and actress Jennifer Missoni, who is carrying on the family name in Hollywood.

The colors and patterns of their designs "are like the notes of a beautiful love song," said family friend and self-described "Missoni junkie" Quincy Jones, who presented the award to what he dubbed the

Frugal Fashion: Rachel Zoe at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

ZoeLooking at Rachel Zoe and her family is like glancing at a modern and more glamorous version of a classic Norman Rockwell painting. An attractive, happy-looking family, but at the head of the table -- at the head of an entire fashion empire -- sits petite and stylish Zoe.

The stylist, fashion designer and television personality recently returned from the front rows of Paris Fashion Week, where she and husband Rodger Berman, who is president of Rachel Zoe Inc., took in all the top designer shows.

Back in Los Angeles last weekend, Zoe, Berman and best-dressed-baby-in-the-world Skyler, made an appearance as co-hosts at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at Will Rogers State Park. The family spent the sunny afternoon socializing with celebrities such as Selma Blair, Jamie King and Camille Belle, and taking in the polo matches.

PHOTOS: Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

The whole family was dressed in summer whites, with Rachel in a sleeveless ruffled maxi dress, long beaded necklace and white hat, Skyler in white overalls, loafers and straw cowboy hat and Berman in a white shirt, khaki suit and classic fedora.

Zoe's signature 1970s-inspired boho style can be seen in her ruffled maxi and long beads. The plain white looks great on Zoe, but for an event that takes place primarily on grass -- like polo -- it leaves the dress susceptible to stains. A fun, colored pattern will keep the '70s motif and be more practical than white. Try the ruffled maxi dress with white and blue floral print for $79.50 or the strapless ruffled maxi dress with purple print for $75.50, both from Victoriassecret.com. To accessorize like Zoe, try the Candie's silver-tone long beaded illusion necklace with large beads for $14 or the silver-tone long beaded necklace with smaller silver beads for $11.20, both from Kohls.com.

The Zoe-Berman family kept cool on the sidelines with hats for mom, dad and the baby. For a hat similar to Zoe's, get the Collection 18 women's multi-crochet ribbon fedora hat for $14.31 from Amazon.com. For Berman's classic look, try the Mahalo hat from Goorin.com for $20, and for a cowboy-style baby straw hat, the straw cowboy hat from Oldnavy.com for $7.99.

Now clad in hats, you and your family are ready for a polo match and some good old-fashioned divot stomping in style -- or for any garden party.

New York Fashion Week: Rachel Zoe

Rachel
I have been delinquent in writing about Rachel Zoe's spring 2012 collection, shown in New York last week, which was a strong second outing for the stylist turned reality-show star turned designer.

Zoe continued to impress with a range of wearable styles. There were boho and high glam pieces, including print maxi dresses, sequin cardigans and mini-dresses. But there were also great-looking tailored pieces, including a cream silk blouse tucked into caramel leather shorts, a ruby silk tie-front blouse and matching slouchy pants, and a rust-colored pantsuit with cropped, flared trousers.  Zoe's accessories are more refined than the ones for fall, including a pair of Celine-like flat sandals with a wide leather ankle cuff.

Zoeshow
But my favorite piece had to be the ivory and gold jacquard gown (above, second from left), with ruffles at the shoulders. It reminds me of the Adrian-designed dress famously worn by Joan Crawford in the 1932 film "Letty Lynton." That dress was one of the most copied movie star costumes of all time, with Macy's alone selling 50,000 pieces. And now, nearly 80 years later, it's reverberating again. Talk about holding a mirror up to a mirror up to a mirror.

The collection looked pretty terrific for the price (most pieces are less than $750), and according to Bloomingdales Fashion Director Stephanie Solomon, the line is already selling well in its first season. More than 2,000 people stood in line to get Zoe's autograph on Fashion's Night Out at the 59th Street store, she said. "And they bought things."

Rachel Zoe and husband Rodger Berman to co-host local polo match

Rodger Berman and Rachel Zoe with Nacho Figueras and Delfine Blacquier

The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is returning to Los Angeles this October, with stylist-reality TV star Rachel Zoe and husband Rodger Berman signing on to serve as co-hosts alongside model-polo player Nacho Figueras, his wife, Defina Blaquier, and Veuve Clicquot President Vanessa Kay.

The match is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades -- the same place last year's inaugural event was held.

In addition to two new co-hosts, this year's event also comes with a price tag; tickets to the event will cost $15. Although last year's event was free, organizers point to recent state budget cuts and staff reductions -- and say the money will help fund preservation efforts at Will Rogers State Historic Park.

A schedule of the day's events, full details and a link to buy tickets can be found at the event's website, www.VCSeason.com/LApolo.

Frugal Fashion: Rachel Zoe takes her '70s vibe to the Hamptons

Rachel Zoe Rachel Zoe seems to don a different career hat for each day of the week -- Philip Treacy designs or vintage turbans, of course. She's taking the fashion world by storm with her new clothing line and her show "The Rachel Zoe Project," premieres its fourth season Sept. 6 on Bravo.

The stylist-turned-designer made a recent New York appearance at the 14th annual Super Saturday shopping event to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, hosted by Emma Roberts, Kelly Ripa, Donna Karan and InStyle at Nova's Ark Project. Zoe took her signature '70s vibe and made it Hamptons chic, looking Mah-jor (for those familiar with Zoeisms) in an elegant white lacy kaftan-style maxi dress, a long beaded tassel necklace and oversized rectangular pink tinted glasses.

For a similar care-free look, get a lacy or crocheted dress like the West Coast wardrobe mesh midi dress for $45 from Boutiquetoyou.com, Mirage maxi dress for $65 from Needsupply.com, Lazy Rivers white maxi dress from Lulus.com for $35, Pins and Needles Chantilly dress $89 from Urbanoutfitters.com or the A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz crochet-overlay dress for $92.99 from LordandTaylor.com.

Zoedresses

Nothing accessorizes like a swishing tassel. It's fun, flirty and holds its own against a long maxi dress.  For some tassel necklaces with a little added embellishment, get the Leatherette chains and necklace for $6.80, beaded necklace with tassel for $11.80, vintage tassel necklace for $5.80, all from Forever21.com or the silk tassel and crystal necklace from Urbanoutfitters.com for $29.

Zoenecklaces

A great pair of oversized shades can be your best friend in so many situations. Lucky for fashionistas on a budget you don't have to spend a couple hundred for a dependable pair. Get the signature Zoe larger-than-life sunglass look with the square or wine sunglasses, both priced at $5.80 from Forever21.com; or the FENY sunshine rhinestone vented rectangular sunglasses from Kohls.com for $16.80.

Fashion Report: Fendi's farewell to Amy Winehouse

Here's a news flash: Middle-aged moms copy their daughters' style. Case in point: Carol Middleton, mother of current fashion darlings Catherine Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa. In this case, why not? Both girls have great taste (in fact, it's pretty likely they learned at least something about style from Mom). But it would be a whole different story if, say, Lady Gaga's mother took a fashion cue from her. [Telegraph]

Kate Middleton's wedding gown

Meanwhile, the Buckingham Palace display of the Catherine's beautiful Sarah Burton wedding gown opened Saturday, but not before Queen Elizabeth II took in a private viewing, accompanied by Kate. The queen reportedly was not pleased. Displaying the gown on a headless mannequin was "horrid," she was overheard to say. Somehow, I don't think the half a million or more people who are expected to traipse through before the exhibit closes in October will care. [Telegraph]

Galaxy midfielder David Beckham spent two days shooting the ad campaign for his latest scent, Homme. Shoe lovers, top this: Professional poker player Beth Shak buys a new pair of shoes almost every time she competes. She's at 1,200 pairs and counting. Oh, and 700 of them are Louboutins. [WWD]

Little Skyler Berman, son of Rachel Zoe and Rodger Berman, has been showered with designer gear, as our Booth Moore pointed out in a recent story. The latest is a Louis Vuitton diaper bag. Mom can alternate it with the Alexander McQueen one, or the Chanel. [Lilsugar]

Katy Perry's transition back to being a blond is complete, and she showed off her new look on MTV. [Coco Perez]

Singer Amy Winehouse, found dead over the weekend, had the possibility of becoming a fashion icon, but never really reached her potential. She inspired Karl Lagerfeld in a Chanel show in December 2007 and collaborated with Fred Perry on a collection, but was largely absent from the fashion scene. Fendi issued a statement: "We are very sad for the loss of such a unique talent that in many ways transcended music, fashion, and culture." [The Cut]

Rachel Zoe: Empire builder

Rachel Zoe launches fashion collection.Rachel Zoe is in an empire-building mode.

In just one decade, she's gone from no-name stylist to red carpet tastemaker -- earning $6,000 a day, with clients including Cameron Diaz, Eva Mendes and Demi Moore -- to full-fledged celebritydom, with a Bravo reality show and a QVC line. Now, she's launching a fashion collection with  prices that range from $250 to $700 and a style that says "1970s."

"I wanted androgyny and the powerful woman look," Zoe says. "It’s very Jane Birkin-y and Anjelica Huston-y and Bianca Jagger-y, with a splash of sequins, a little Liza Minelli, thrown in." Booth Moore reports on all that is new in Zoe's life (and that includes a rather well-dressed baby boy named Skyler) -- plus an update on other celebrity stylists who have parlayed their status into clothing and accessories brands.
