New: Rodarte for dudes at Opening Ceremony

Rage_rodarte_men Rage_rodarte_men2Call it Rodarte for dudes (or would that be "Ro-dude-te"?) -- this morning, fashion industry trade paper WWD (subscription required) reported that L.A.-based sister act Kate and Laura Mulleavy have broadened their Rodarte womenswear line to include the XY chromosome -- albeit for a limited run of just four handmade sweaters.

The designers have created two crewneck and two cardigan styles similar in aesthetic to the gauzy, spiderwebby women's sweaters (though they look a tad more fitted to us). The sweaters are currently available only through Opening Ceremony, where they retail for $2,760 each.

But apparently we shouldn't see this as a trial balloon for a future expanded men's collection. Although the label has also done a couple of men's T-shirts -- also  for Opening Ceremony --  Rodarte spokesman Brian Phillips told WWD that at this time there are no plans for additional forays into menswear.

The sweaters are available at the brick-and-mortar Opening Ceremony stores at 35 Howard St. in New York City and at 451 N. La Cienega Blvd. (where we're told the stock is currently limited to a small and medium size in each style) as well as through Opening Ceremony's online shop.

Shopping: Opening Ceremony kicks it with Timberland

OCNN_TimberlandxOC_Preorder Opening Ceremony operates as a bicoastal high fashion stimulus, reviving mothballed American clothing brands such as Pendleton, Bass and -- now -- Timberland.

The New York-based store, which has a Los Angeles boutique on La Cienega Boulevard, collaborated with the rugged shoe manufacturer to hipster-ize two trademark men’s styles: The trademark Convenience 6-inch suede boot ($225) now comes with flat elastic laces, one in neon (for when you hit the clubs) and the other in tan. The other shoe is the preppy 7-Eye moccasin ankle boot ($195) in burnished leather that can be laced up in hide or high-tech Taslan.

Today (Oct. 19), both kicks arrive in the Opening Ceremony boutiques.

Just can't get enough of Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony?

Chloe Sevigny's first menswear collection for Opening Ceremony, influenced by Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan and her own Darien, Conn., upbringing, lands in the boutique this weekend. And the term menswear is used loosely: the blazers, button-downs and trousers are unisex. Sevigny, who plays polygamist Nicolette Grant on HBO's "Big Love," also imparts some prairie chic in the shirt collection featuring over-dyed oxblood calico ($335), plaid flannel ($315) and floral prints ($325). Gahan circa 1986 would definitely rock the long deconstructed blazer ($760), black pegged pants ($370) and buckled creepers ($550). For women who find creepers a bit too Hollywood High, Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony also introduces a new wedge boot ($630).

Opening Ceremony's Little House of Accessories opens this weekend

Opening Ceremony is expanding its stock of hip and hard to find offerings and launching the Little House of Accessories this Sunday. The all-accessories boutique sits adjacent to the main store and will sell pieces from Proenza Schouler, Linda Farrow, Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, Band of Outsiders and Alexander Wang.

But this is no cold, museum-like setting of precious designer product. The interior of the shop has a “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” vibe with huge pizza slice-shaped seating and pepperoni stools.

Little House of Accessories will open with a selection of Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Edwardian jewelry from the New York-based Kentshire galleries.

Stop by, pull up a pepperoni and try on some vintage baubles.

Betsey Johnson launches archive collection with Opening Ceremony

After 30 years designing some of the most zany and memorable looks in fashion, Betsey Johnson is revisiting her past as a designer and launching an archive collection for Fall '09.  Curated by Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony, the 35-piece collection of clothing and accessories will reflect Johnson’s eponymous line as well as her Alley Cat and Paraphernalia lines from the 1960s.09020103106_2

I’m expecting to see lots of cabbage rose prints, circle zipper pulls and colorful leggings and am also thinking that now’s the time to bring the old Betsey Johnson items out of my closet and start wearing them again.

The Betsey Johnson Archive collection will be available for fall 2009 at Opening Ceremony NY and LA and at select Betsey Johnson boutiques.

Uniqlo and Opening Ceremony team up for exclusive West Coast collection

Uniqlo men's collection for Opening Ceremony L.A Japanese cheap chic label Uniqlo has teamed up with Opening Uniqlo men's collection for Opening Ceremony L.A. Ceremony for a men’s spring/summer '09 collection that will be exclusive to Opening Ceremony’s West Coast boutique.

Until now, the closest we could find Uniqlo was at its department-store-sized space in downtown Manhattan.

The collection features wrinkle-free check shirts, linen cotton trousers, a full zip cardigan, and a shawl collar anorak in colors ranging from black to navy to orange and will hit Opening Ceremony next month. Prices range from $19-$79.

No word of a women’s line, but that won’t stop me from buying the small sizes from this collection and working them into my spring wardrobe — especially the wrinkle-free pieces.
