Joining the racks of skinny jeans and burnout tanks in the juniors department at Nordstrom is a new collection of clothing and accessories inspired by "Twilight: New Moon."  The line launches Oct. 15 and includes “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob” T-shirts for tweens who want to show some pep.  For those who know movie lines and imagery by heart, there are Ts that say, “Bet you can’t read my mind” and bracelets and key rings with charms of Bella’s truck, Jacob’s motorcycle and vampire family crests.  271092_TEA-1 271091_CHA-1

"New Moon" the movie comes out Nov. 20, about a month after this line hits Nordstrom floors. Wonder what all the "Twilight" super fans will be wearing while waiting in line for tickets?

Lohan promotes leggings line by greeting fans at the Grove

December 9, 2008 | 12:29 pm

Lindsay Lohan hasn't been in the tabloids much lately, but last night, the actress did make a very low-key appearance to promote her new line of leggings, 6126. Lohan greeted a group of about 75 fans who waited behind stanchions inside Nordstrom at the Grove. Many of them had purchased several pairs of her second-skin stretch pants -- with the proceeds benefiting Women’s Cancer Research -- and stood patiently, some for more than two hours, for Lohan to say hello.  56336459

An alarmingly thin Lohan wore a pair of solid black leggings from her line with a rhinestone studded tux jacket and black ankle boots with jeweled stack heels -- a more subdued choice considering the majority of 6126 styles have animal prints, metallic details or are solid lace. “I was wearing leggings all the time and wanted to improve the comfort,” she said about the beginning of the line. “Chanel did these great tights that I wished were leggings, so Karl (Lagerfeld) said, ‘Why don’t you make them as leggings?’ ” She was also inspired by Azzedine Alaia’s lace leggings, but thought the $1,500 price tag was too steep for most women, so she made a pair that retail for closer to $150.

But why leggings? The super-thin Lohan looks svelte in them, (she wears the size 0 in 6126 and her 14-year-old sister Ali wears the size 1). What about the majority of women who may have a bit more junk in the trunk? “I never liked my thighs when I was younger and I don’t always feel comfortable with my body, so I understand that,” she says. “Pair a big sweater with leggings or layer, that’s what makes them so good for winter.” I’ll keep that tip in mind, should it ever get cold enough here to layer with big sweaters.

As for the Marilyn Monroe references that are threaded through the line (6126 is Monroe’s birthday and there is a style called Mr. President), Lohan sees her brand as a way to keep the late actress’s legacy alive and was very much inspired after re-creating Monroe’s famous and final 1962 photo shoot with photographer Bert Stern in New York Magazine last February.

One fan in attendance, who is probably too young to care about Lohan’s infatuation with Monroe, was a 12-year-old named Edna Cerritos -- a brain cancer patient whom Lohan met while visiting Los Angeles Childrens Hospital. The two became friends and keep in touch through text messages and letters.

Cerritos was given a pair of cropped lace leggings that she quickly ran to the dressing rooms to put on. She plans to wear them on New Year's Eve. The young fan beamed with joy over her new pair of pants. But are they comfortable? “Uh…,” Cerritos hesitated. “Yeah."

Lohan launches leggings line

December 4, 2008 | 10:30 am

Love it or hate it, leggings are still around. In fact, the trend has grown tremendously with several brands dedicated to creating only leggings. And it’s no longer just a stretchy pair of cotton pants to wear from yoga to the supermarket or when you’re feeling especially '80s. Recently, several lines have popped up making everything from tuxedo pant leggings to “denim jean” leggings that would make any hipster happy.

Members Only, the revived '80s "it" brand, is doing leggings modeled after a five-pocket jean. They   1blue_faux_five certainly create a clean silhouette, with no pesky pocket lining to bunch up at the upper thigh -- sure to be a hit as second skins for girls who are finding their stovepipe jeans too roomy.

1kenya_chicb From Members Only to leggings only, a brand called Costume Dept. is doing a Bea Arthur-does-Vegas (but oddly enough in a good way) collection of splashy leggings. These are not your basic layering pieces. Gold foil geometric prints, Japanese florals and zebra stripes canvas these pants, which become the statement maker of any outfit.

For a black tie affair, a company called DL Collection has slick black leggings with a shiny tux stripe running down the side.  They’ll look perfect with a tux front graphic T-shirt and a corsage of pink carnations.

And perhaps the strongest sign that the trend isn’t going away is Lindsay Lohan’s line of leggings called 6126 (after Marilyn Monroe’s birthday). Li-Lo apparently loves her leggings, though I always thought she had more of a fondness for Herve Leger bandage dresses when it came to skintight clothing and I’m confused as to what Marilyn Monroe’s birthday has to do with leggings?

Nonetheless, Lohan’s doing a personal appearance Monday at Nordstrom in the Grove to launch the line. Anyone who wants to meet the actress/leggings designer has to purchase a pair of her 6126 leggings to do so. A percentage of the evening’s sales will be given to ovarian cancer research.

I’ll be talking to Lohan during the event -- so tune in Dec. 9 for more details on her new role as designer and lover of leggings.

Adventures in gift giving: Nordstrom ultimate gift collection

November 26, 2008 | 12:45 pm

While a lot of retailers are wildly promoting their holiday discounts to bolster sales, Nordstrom is taking a different approach to the kind of gift options it's stocking this season. The department store is offering an “Ultimate Gift Collection” that is perfect for that person for whom a generic sweater just won’t do and who is worth spending $15,000 to $200,000 on.

Nordstrom has commissioned several artists and designers to create one-of-a kind gift items or experiences. These four gift packages will be available to the few shoppers who can afford them this year.

The “Ultimate Gift Collection” includes:

  • A custom couch designed by Tory Burch, the least-expensive option at $15,000.
  • An armoire designed and stocked by Juicy Couture. Two armoires are available at $15,000 each.
  • A family portrait session with celebrity photographer Sam Jones.  Two portrait sessions are available at $50,000 each.
  • Custom artwork by artist Ruben Toledo. A 12-foot-by-20-foot personalized painting. One available at $200,000.

Such extravagance may not seem relevant in a time when people can’t pay their mortgage, but if you’re looking to spoil someone, might as well go all the way and make it something exclusive and special.

What’ll happen to all those lonely sweaters sitting at Nordstrom this year? Something more exciting has come along.
