Fashion News: Formichetti bombs with critics, despite Lady Gaga

Mugler's Spring-Summer 2012 collection
As promised, creative director Nicola Formichetti started Mugler's Paris Fashion Week show with a short video of his muse Lady Gaga. But the lady herself didn't make an appearance, leaving some attendees to focus only on the quality of what they saw walking down the runway. And apparently they were not amused. "No new trends there," the Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley tweeted. Indeed, from the looks of the picture above, things seemed rather bland. Speaking of "ANTM," Vogue editor at large Andre Leon Talley announced that he is leaving the show's judging panel as of the next cycle, starting early next year. He will be replaced by Kelly Cutrone. [People]

Alas. If it sounds too good to be true, it might be too good to be true. Reebok has agreed to pay $25 million in refunds to consumers to settle allegations by the Federal Trade Commission that the company falsely claimed that its toning shoes and other products strengthened muscles, making for svelte legs and butts in record time. The settlement covers EasyTone walking shoes, RunTone running shoes and EasyTone flip flops. [Los Angeles Times]

Gustavo Dudamel, John and Joan Hotchkis Ellen Olivier over at SocietyNewsLA reports that many women who attended Tuesday night's L.A. Phil Gala dressed in blue, matching their gowns to the "Rhapsody in Blue" theme of the evening, which started with the Los Angeles Philharmonic's all-Gershwin program. Among them was gala committee co-chair Joan Hotchkis, shown here with husband John, center, who was also a co-chair, and music director Gustavo Dudamel. [SocietyNewsLA]

Galaxy star David Beckham says he designed his new men's fragrance Homme with wife Victoria in mind, since the scent is “something that she has to put up with being on me.” I'm not sure "has to put up with" is a good phrase to use to promote a new product. In any event, he says the fragrance -- a mix of citrus, wood and peppery notes -- passed the smell test when he tried it out on his three sons. [People]

Gala in the Garden at the Hammer Museum

Actors (including Neil Patrick Harris, Will Farrell, Dana Delany and John C. Reilly), artists (such as Ed Ruscha and David LaChapelle) and design stars (such as Monique Lhuillier) turned out for Saturday's Gala in the Garden at the Hammer Museum in L.A. Formichetti, Kamali meld fashion, entertainment, technology

Boffo, Nicola Formichetti's New York pop-up shop

At New York Fashion Week, which wrapped up Thursday, there was a lot to mull over besides the clothes and a lot to look at in addition to the many celebrities who grabbed front-row seats and headlines.

Mugler designer Nicola Formichetti's pop-up shop, for instance, which is set to remain open till Wednesday, made for an eye-popping field trip. Fashion critic Booth Moore compares it to "a mirrored fun house." It's not surprising that the man who is also a primary stylist for Lady Gaga would be expert at melding the worlds of fashion and entertainment.

Moore was also intrigued by Norma Kamali's 3-D video and by websites that allow designers to sell directly to consumers without going through store buyers as middlemen.

Norma Kamali Technology is changing the way fashion is presented and sold, as Moore explains in her examination of how technology, entertainment and fashion intersected during the shows.
