Celebrate good times with Wool and the Gang at New High (M)art on Saturday

Screen shot 2009-12-03 at 13.24.29
Instead of dropping some bills on a knit scarf, beanie or cropped scarf off the rack, Wool and the Gang encourages fashionable young people to darn-it-yourself with needles and yarn.

Wool and the Gang makes ready-to-knit kits with balls of yarn, knitting needles and instructions plus online video tutorials on its website. The pattern choices include beanies, shoulder wings (pictured), snoods, scarves, fingerless gloves, headbands and leg warmers priced from $69 to $189. Wool and the Gang makes knitting fun by adding funky yarn choices such as chunky Crazy Sexy Wool and ultra-soft Sugar Baby Alpaca. For those that don't have the patience to knit a cropped sweater, Wool and the Gang also makes ready-to-wear knitwear knitted by hand in the Peruvian Andes priced from $85 to $350.

Wool and the Gang was founded by Lisa Sabrier, a former model, and pal Carolyn Main in Switzerland, where both women live in the Alps. Recently, the brand opened a studio in New York's SoHo and hosted an in-store knitting chalet at Paris' Colette last winter.

On Saturday, New High (M)art in Los Feliz is hosting a meet-and-greet at 6 p.m. with Wool and the Gang designer Aurélie Nicod, who worked with Balmain's Christophe Decarnin, doling out knitting tips.

Unfortunately, a rocking chair isn't included.

New High (M)art moves from Chinatown to Los Feliz Village

New high mart New High (M)art, which recently moved to Los Feliz Village from downtown, definitely has a personality.

The original boutique opened in Chinatown two years ago with themed installations including one called World Fringe that featured clothing from local avant-garde designers alongside inexpensive accessories, shoes and music from international vendors out of Mexico, Uganda and other parts of the world. The Los Feliz incarnation carries on that eclectic tradition by stocking tote bags from Ghana next to graphic T-shirts from L.A.'s Brian Lichtenberg.

Co-owners Miho Ikeda and Richard James "T-Rik" Brewer decided to uproot New High (M)art from Chinatown after it outgrew its tiny original space. The new location on Vermont Avenue in Los Feliz Village is four times bigger. And while other retail areas are blanketed with "For Lease" signs, retailers have been flocking steadily to Los Feliz, including names such as Steven Alan Outpost, Confederacy, Panty Raid, Pop Killer and Vamp Shoes.

"After exploring the whole destination-based, off-the-grid retailing thing, we found ourselves ready for some real foot traffic," Brewer says.
