Toddlers & Tiaras

The father of JonBenet Ramsay, the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant found slain at home 15 years ago in a case that remains unsolved, says he regrets allowing his daughter to participate in pageants and be put on display because it could have made her a target. And he finds television shows like "Toddlers & Tiaras," above, disturbing, he says. [New York Daily News]

"The Bachelor's" Ben Flajnik and Courtney Robertson swore Monday night after this season's finale that although they had broken up between the filming of the proposal and its airing, they are back together and happy. But when Robertson was seen out running errand in L.A. on Tuesday she wasn't wearing the engagement ring. Hmmmm? [Us Weekly]

Jennifer Lawrence

A variety of styles was seen on the red carpet during the L.A. premiere of "The Hunger Games" on Monday evening. Notable looks included star Jennifer Lawrence's old-school gold lame gown with sweeping train, Kelly Osbourne's feminine tuxedo (worn with lavender hair), Miley Cyrus' two-piece bustier and skirt and Elizabeth Banks' one-shoulder orange mini. [Updated July 7, 1:41 p.m.] Your Morning Fashion and Beauty Report: Duchess Kate's shoes, Sarah Jessica Parker's wallet and Hugh Laurie's face make news

  Akate
Akashoes Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is offering up lessons in what one can and can't do in heels on her visit to Canada. In Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, on Tuesday, she gamely wielded a shovel to plant a shrub, despite being dressed in heels and a Malene Birger cream linen dress. But she drew the line a bit later, when invited to take some shots during a street hockey game. Not while wearing heels, she reportedly told some of the players, although she did throw out the soft ball that was used in place of a puck, above. But husband William gamely took a few shots -- one of which hit a cameraman. [People]

At left, you can see just how high Kate's heels were. Too high for hockey, too high for walking, or fashionably de rigeur? You tell us.

Meanwhile, as the Paris couture shows go on in Paris this week, observers are noting fashion editors and celebrity attendees such as Katie Holmes and Cate Blanchett reportedly are dressing like Duchess Catherine, whose every style move has been watched since her engagement and wedding. Bookmakers are even laying odds on which designer Kate will wear to the star-studded BAFTA dinner in Los Angeles on Saturday, with Victoria Beckham the 3-to-1 favorite ahead of Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen (who designed Kate's wedding gown) 4 to 1. [Telegraph]

Sarah Jessica Parker not only got to wear great clothes and shoes during her "Sex and the City" run, but the series also is making her rich. According to Forbes, She tied Angelina Jolie for top-earning actress in Hollywood due in large part to royalties as well as to her beauty endorsements, bringing in $30 million from May 2010 to May 2011. Just behind Jolie and Parker were Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, each at $28 million. [Forbes]

Ahugh Ok, this just seems wrong: crotchety Dr. House as the new "face" of beauty? Actor Hugh Laurie, who embodies the television character, was just named celebrity face of L'Oreal's men's Expert line of products. "At first I thought it was a mistake," says the modest Laurie. [StyleList]

The mini-trend toward using plus-size models is, ahem, increasing. The somewhat greater demand has prompted Models1, the London-based agency that launched Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Yasmin Le Bon as supermodels has joined forces with plus-size-model agency Excel because more clients are requesting models who can show larger sizes. When it's time to shop for fall, many of us turn to the all-important September issues of fashion magazines to get a clue. But there's a new game in town, thanks to the digital world. An increasing number of fashion brands are using their own websites and iPad apps to show customers their looks for fall. [WWD]

Margulies was among celebrity browsers at an auction this week of 22 little black dresses designed by the likes of Givenchy's Riccardo Tischi and Jean Paul Gaultier. More than $100,000 was raised to support breast cancer charities in the U.S. and France at the auction, sponsored by Swarovski Elements at auctioneer Phillips de Pury & Co.'s New York location. Lisa Edelstein was there too, and chatted about this season's romance between Cuddy, her character on Fox's  "House," and Hugh Laurie's misanthropic Dr. House. [Wall Street Journal]

Reebok has a new line of NFL-branded maternity T-shirts, so pregnant women can keep wearing their favorite team's colors even with a baby bump. "The View's" Elizabeth Hasselbeck appeared at the launch, though the mother of three children under 6 joked that she'll just use hers as a nightgown, figuring it will provide birth control simply by being unsexy. I don't know, Elizabeth. Some guys can get pretty fired up at the sight of those team logos! [People]

The Kazanjian Red Diamond, one of the most spectacular gemstones ever found, has gone on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Not only is the 5.05 carat emerald cut red diamond rare, but it has one of those mysterious, storied pasts involving miners in South Africa, diamond brokers and Nazis. [T Magazine]

L'Oreal hosts a luncheon with Diane Keaton at Mr. Chow's

Juf2csnc
"It's a good day anyway, but it's a great day because of this jacket," joked Diane Keaton, modeling her newest wardrobe addition, a form-fitting black leather Rick Owens jacket. "L'Oreal bought this for me -- isn't that amazing?"

The actress and L'Oreal spokeswoman was seated amongst a small group of beauty and fashion editors Thursday afternoon for a press luncheon at Mr. Chow's in Beverly Hills -- part of the promotional swirl for L'Oreal's new Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition moisturizer, which is intended for very dry, mature skin.

Keaton, 64, may be mature, but her skin looked radiant (a prerequisite for spokesmodel-dom, I suppose). And clad in the sublime Owens jacket, wide-brimmed black hat, pencil skirt, glasses and ankle boots, she also looked stylish in that studious, classic Diane Keaton way.

The actress chatted ably about architecture (she's currently working on an architecture book), lamenting the recent loss of great architecture magazines including Metropolitan Home and Western Interiors ("It's so sad they're all going") -- which led to a robust group conversation about the future of magazines and the Internet.

When the dialogue turned to fashion, Keaton said she prefers structured garments as opposed to drapey pieces, noting, "You can't have the sad-sack body with droopy cotton. You have to have the perky body."

The actress, who's been a face for L'Oreal for three years, started work on the two-day commercial shoot for the Paris Age Perfect moisturizer Friday at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. When I asked what she likes most about being a spokeswoman for the company, Keaton's answer was typically good-humored. "I like the fact that it's for older women," she said, "And I like the free product."
