Fashion News: Olivier Martinez gives Halle Berry a ring

Kate Middleton and Pippa Middleton; wedding dress by Alexander McQueen's creative director Sarah Burton

The lovely wedding dress Alexander McQueen's creative director Sarah Burton designed for the Duchess of Cambridge has been nominated for a prestigious British design award. It is one of two McQueen nominations in the London Design Museum's Designs of the Year competition. "Savage Beauty," the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art's retrospective on the late McQueen's work, is also in contention. [Telegraph]

French actor Olivier Martinez and Halle Berry have become engaged, which means two things to us here at All the Rage: We can drool over the one-of-a-kind emerald and diamond engagement ring, and we can dream about the wedding to come. [Us Weekly]

Lindsay Lohan has been busy (and we hope staying out of legal trouble since she stands a chance of being off probation by next month, as we previously reported). She modeled for German label Philipp Plein's spring ad campaign and the ads debuted this week. She's also on the January cover of Maxim and, of course, the February cover of Playboy, as we've also reported. [The Cut]

When "The Hunger Games" hits the big screen in March, be sure to pay attention to the hair colors. Lead colorist Cherry Petenbrink had to come up with fanciful colors for the cast, including 500 extras. There are blue ponytails and pink curls and other rainbow hues. She predicts we'll see a trend. I predict she's right. [Beauty High]

This week, the Calvin Klein Collection and the Peggy Siegal Co. threw a party in New York for "Glee" star Darren Criss, in town to replace Daniel Radcliffe in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" for a few weeks. [WWD]

-- Tennis star and fashion fixture Maria Sharapova relaunched her popular website Mariasharapova.com on Thursday. Sharapova, who has fashion partnerships with Cole Haan, Nike and Tag Heuer, is active in social media too, with 3.9 million Facebook fans (more than tennis champs Venus and Serena Williams, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki combined). On the website, fans can not only see pictures of Sharapova, but if she's wearing, say, a pair of Cole Haan shoes, they can click and buy. [WWD]

-- Emma Watson, who is taking a break from her studies at Brown to promote the last Harry Potter film and to work on other movie projects, is also still pursuing her fashion interests. She teamed with Alberta Ferretti to create a capsule collection of romantic, summer pieces made from organic cotton, muslin and hemp. Pieces will be sold online only at Albertaferetti.com starting in late March. Part of the proceeds from the Pure Threads collaboration will be donated to the fair trade fashion label People Tree, for whom Watson designed three collections previously. [Telegraph]

Michael Ball, Rock & Republic founder, seems to have found himself in a bit of hot water. No, it has nothing to do with his label, which went bankrupt earlier this year. The controversy instead involves professional cycling and a few names you might have heard of, including Floyd Landis and Tyler Hamilton. [The Cut]

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Chelsea Clinton, Madonna and David Beckham

Chelsea in Vera Wang -- Apparently, we're still talking about Chelsea Clinton's wedding and her Vera Wang dress dress (each of Chelsea's bridesmaids also wore Wang creations in the form of a strapless bias cut lavender chiffon gown with a side drape and contrasting plum bow) ... and the ivory silk dress she wore to her reception. Women's Wear Daily has a full report. [WWD] And the New York Daily News proclaimed her a "modern-day princess." [NYDN]

-- And, finally, we feel compelled to acknowledge the release, from a Lynwood jail, of Lindsay Lohan (who served briefly as an "artistic adviser" to the house of Ungaro). She "thanked everybody as she left" and is entering a treatment program at UCLA. [LAT]

Lindsay Lohan's other fashion gig

 Lohan6126

You have to admire Lindsay Lohan for continuing to pursue fashion after taking such a beating from the press (me included) during her brief stint as artistic advisor of French luxury brand Ungaro. That takes courage and dedication.

For fall, she's expanding her leggings-only fashion line 6126 into a full collection of looks to take a woman from day to night. Well not quite...more like from night to morning, but God knows there's a market for that.  Lohan

Lohan, the brand's creative director, wasn't in her showroom to tell me about the collection. But she does appear in the fall look-book, posing in thigh-high boots in one shot, and an outfit that could be described as a sequin jumper in another.

Her PR rep reports that "despite what everyone says," Lohan is very involved in the design process, choosing fabrics and inspecting samples at her downtown L.A. studio, even having all the leather jackets redone at the last minute because the sleeves didn't fit snugly enough.

The bread and butter of the collection is still leggings. ("Lindsay really started the legging trend," her sales rep says.) They come in every stripe -- with leather or lace insets, studded details, a dusting of black sequins and more. The coolest pair appeared to have tiny rips all over, but not in a raunchy way.

Mini dresses, the kind you'd wear out clubbing in Hollywood, were also key, the best one in black crocodile embossed leather (it comes with long sleeves or sleeveless). The leathers were all pretty likable actually, including a drapey burnished gold leather jacket (it also comes as a vest). Chunky cardigans, sequin or lace-covered hoodies (you know how Lindsay likes to rock a hood) and nylon puffer jackets rounded out the 280-piece collection.

According to Lohan's rep, store buyers liked what they saw. Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Ron Herman are all on board with the collection, which hits stores in July, priced at about $60 to $1,000.

Maybe LiLo does have a future in this industry. After all, fashion loves a comeback almost as much as Hollywood does.

Lindsay Lohan expands her line of leggings to include handbags and clothes

Lindsaylohan

Now that Lindsay Lohan has been relieved of her post as artistic director at Ungaro, the party girl has some time to focus on her own line, 6126.

The leggings collection is expanding into handbags and a full clothing collection set to hit stores in July. Earlier this week, rumors circulated that Lohan would be collaborating on a bag line with Ed Hardy. But the only connection there is the California Bag Co., the licensee that produces the Ed Hardy bags and, now, 6126. That piece of news came as a giant relief, because the visual that flew through my head upon hearing about a possible collaboration between Lohan and Ed Hardy was truly frightening.

As creative director of 6126, Lohan has tapped designer Paz Shakked Wolf (formerly of Dolce & Gabbana and Tarina Tarantino) to create the bags for the three-year licensing deal with California Bag Co.

And as far as the clothes go -- no word yet on what they'll look like, but at least she’s thinking about pieces to cover up the top half and pair with the leggings.

Baby steps.

Fashion Diary: Lindsay Lohan named artistic adviser of house of Ungaro [UPDATED]*

Lindsay-lohan-ungaro Gossip, first impressions, trends in the making, celebrities and style setters. A regular feature by fashion critic Booth Moore.

In what seems to be a desperate bid for relevance, the troubled house of Emanuel Ungaro announced today the appointment of Lindsay Lohan as artistic adviser [UPDATED 12 p.m. An earlier version of this post’s story and headline stated that Lindsay Lohan was Ungaro’s new artistic director. She is the artistic advisor]. Estrella Archs (who has worked for Nina Ricci, Emilio Pucci, Christian Lacroix and Prada) was named chief designer. Apparently, the two have been collaborating on the spring collection which will be shown in Paris on Oct. 4.

"Twenty-first century muses are extroverts whose personal style and experience gives them strong creative and artistic focus. Thus our vision of combining the eye of the ultimate luxury consumer, a celebrity," said Mounir Moufarrige, president of Emanuel Ungaro.

The house was bought by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Asim Abdullah in 2003 and has had a revolving door of designers since then, most recently Miami wunderkind Esteban Cortizar.

It's a puzzling move for several reasons, the least of which is that Lohan's status as muse is questionable. (Doesn't she have a line of leggings?) In a time when everyone is mad for the 1980s, and so many designers (Nicolas Ghesquiere, Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim) have dipped into the Ungaro archives for inspiration -- the brash prints, sculpted sleeves and ruffled cocktail confections -- it's sad that the original house cannot get it together. Oh well, who knows? Maybe it will work. Stranger things have happened. One thing's for sure: We'll all be paying attention.
