Kohl's to launch 'American Idol' inspired line Authentic Icon

Kohl's to launch line inspired by "American Idol"

It seems the "American Idol" television phenomenon has crossed into the fashion world. Mega-store Kohl's is teaming up with design and apparel production company LF USA to launch a line of clothing inspired by the reality television singing competition. The line, called Authentic Icon (AI), will be available in the junior's and young men's departments at Kohl's stores beginning in April.

LF USA's MESH (Music Entertainment Sports Holdings) division will be the design force behind the new collection, which "will build upon the powerful influence of music and entertainment on today's fashion conscious consumers," said Rick Darling, president of LF USA, in a release.

The AI collection consists of items you'd expect the rock concert-going crowd to don with an appropriate head bob and sign of the horns. For women, candy-striped denim, printed tees, denim vests, jackets and printed maxi dresses, and for men, printed tees and oxfords, vests, blazers and a denim shirt with an American flag design on the back that reads "US Tour."

The line will be exclusively available at Kohl's through the end of the "American Idol" 11th season in June.

Rock & Republic for Kohl's fits like a pair of skinny jeans

Rock and Republic for Kohl's

Rock & Republic, once stocked in upscale department stores like Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, is back on store shelves this month -- exclusively at Kohl's -- and based on the selection sent down the runway at a press unveiling Friday, the once high-flying premium label and the value-priced retailer fit like that favorite pair of skinny jeans.

Among the women's offerings sent down the pocket-sized runway were sequined camis ($48), stud-embellished tank tops ($44 ) dresses ($70) and heels ($74.99) and denim bottoms that ranged from cuffed utility shorts ($72) to curve-hugging flare-legged jeans ($80). The men's collection didn't stray

Frugal Fashion: Rashida Jones at the Sundance Film Festival

Rashida Jones

Red carpets at the Sundance Film Festival are a little different. Park City, Utah, in January is too cold and snowy for the usual thin dresses, cut down to there and slit up to here. Instead parkas, scarves and knit hats rule.

The festival's most stylish set -- and we're counting Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell and Rashida Jones -- are braving the weather wearing long-sleeved minis over tights, casual ponchos, skinny jeans and boots.

Jones showed how to dress stylishly for a party last weekend at a dinner for the cast of her screenwriting debut "Celeste and Jesse Forever," a romantic comedy starring Emma Roberts and Elijah Wood. It was a star-studded evening on Main Street with guests including Jones' parents Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton; Andy Samberg, Chris Messina and film director Lee Toland Krieger. Jones shone in a textured black Olivier Theyskens for Theory dress and chunky gold jewelry by Lia Sophia. She kept warm under a cropped tuxedo blazer, ribbed tights and combat boots.

Rashidaoutfits

RashidablazerblogJones dressed in all black, but the charming details of her skirt and large buttons on her blouse buttons added definition to the single color palette. For a similar effect, try the Asos mini dress with circle inserts from Asos.com for $80.57.

Jones' look can also be achieved with a button-up blouse and textured skirt. Try the Pink Tartan scalloped tiered skirt from Last Call by Neiman Marcus for $84.50 with the drop armhole button front blouse from Topshop.com for $48.

Jones' fitted, cropped blazer added a bit of warmth and polish. For a similar piece, try the classic cropped blazer from Forever21.com for $27.80.

A pair of ribbed tights are a smart way to conquer cold  weather in style. Try the Hanes Silk Reflections control-top ribbed tights for $10 from Kohls.com. To finish the look, slip into the Steve Madden Graanie black leather combat boot with heel from Footnotesonline.com for $91 or the Vince Camuto Vestas boot from Shoptheshoebox.com for $129.

These pieces will keep you warmly chic for all your upcoming winter soirees.

Frugal Fashion: 'Total Recall's' Jessica Biel at Comic-Con

JessicaEvery year at Comic-Con, the annual pop culture and comic book convention in San Diego, you can find diehard fans dressed as Wookies, Klingons, anime characters, ghostbusteres and more in futuristic capes and lots of spandex. Typical sightings also include Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Batman and fairies roaming around the grounds. But high fashion? That's definitely something new.

This year, as our Melissa Magsaysay pointed out, celebrity attendees dressed to impress, hitting some high style notes throughout the fest. Among the stylish attendees was actress Jessica Biel, promoting her new film "Total Recall,"  director Len Wiseman's remake of the 1990 cult classic which is due for release in August 2012.

Biel has come quite a long way from her days playing Mary Camden on the hit WB show "7th Heaven." The 29-year-old, who once donned spaghetti straps, flannel shirts and baggy jeans -- yes, we all went through that phase in the '90s -- is now a chic, trend-setting figure on the fashion scene.

While speaking at the "At the Drive-In" panel at Comic-Con, Biel wore a pair of high-waisted textured shorts, a midriff-bearing crop top tank and a pair of strappy high heel sandals. Crop tops are very '80s and can typically go one of two ways: exercise video queen or trendy vixen. Biel, achieving the latter look, has been wearing crop tops for years. With a toned tummy like hers who wouldn't want to show it off? And with the high-waisted shorts, shine and texture, the ensemble is definitely dressy enough for a festival appearance.

For a similar look, get a pair of high-waisted shorts with a fun pattern or texture like the Jade animal print shorts from Topshop.com for $70 or the scalloped hem lace short from Freepeople.com for $78. For a more conservative design but a pop of color, get the Odelia Linen short Rugby by Ralph Lauren for $44.99 at Rugby.com or the pink pleat front silk shorts from Topshop.com for $66.

Jessicashorts

To get Biel’s cropped look,  go for a top with some shine, such as the nude embellished sleeveless lace crop top from Topshop.com for $70. For a simpler style with a pattern, get the Printed crop top from Delias.com  for $34.50 or the conservative button-front crop top from Freepeople.com for $58 to pair with patterned shorts. And if you're looking to make a statement with something different, snag the hot pink lace 3/4 sleeve scallop crop top from Topshop.com for $60.

Deliasshirts

Any pair of high heel strappy sandals or espadrilles would work with this look but here are a couple of similar styles: Bucco peep-toe platform high heel for $44.99 from Kohl's.com, M. Melissa jeans high-heeled sandal from Yoox.com for $35 or the Dyle sandal from Aldo.com for $49.98.

Frugal Fashion: William and Kate go cowboy chic on their overseas tour

CowboykatePrince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, might have finished their overseas tour of parts of Canada and California, but we're still buzzing. We just can't get enough of the duchess and her confident, elegant style.

The newlyweds are now old pros at dressing for public appearances. While in the U.S., Catherine wore a flowy Alexander McQueen gown to the BAFTA "Brits to Watch" gala, a hand-painted silver dress by Jenny Packham to a charity polo match in Santa Barbara and a white and navy ensemble to paint with kids at an art center in L.A.'s skid row. But who knew the royal couple would look so good when they went country in jeans and cowboy hats?

These outfits came out when Kate and William made an appearance at the BMO Centre in Calgary, Canada. The look was a far cry from something the duke and duchess would wear to tea with the queen, but it's difficult to watch a lively herd of livestock in heels.

William kicked off the Calgary Stampede in a blue and green tartan plaid shirt, a pair of blue jeans and boots, while Kate wore a pair of dark denim jeans, Temperley London rodeo shirt, boots and a silver buckled-belt. The couple stayed clear of the sun in matching crisp white cowboy hats.

To get Kate's look try a white blouse with a prairie feel like the French Connection vintage grace shirt (below, left) for $39.99 at Frenchconnection.com. For some country ruffles try the silk georgette blouse from Forever21.com for $24.80.

Kateshirts

For a rodeo, a nightclub or even a leisurely Sunday afternoon, there's no need to throw down a couple of hundred dollars for jeans. For a great pair of jeans under $100 try the Frances 18 low-rise boot cut jeans by Silver Jeans Co. for $75, Meltin Pot jeans from Yoox.com for $45 or the 1969 perfect boot cut jeans by Gap for $69.50.

Katejeans
For her accessories, Kate went the traditional western route with a bold silver-buckled belt and cowboy boots. Lasso the look with the Relic two-tone etched buckle belt from Kohls.com for $24 and the American Eagle Outfitters suede desert boot for $59.50.

Kateaccessories

The prince, looking more like a stylish Texas ranger in his rodeo gear, perfected the look of a modern cowboy. For a similar shirt, get the Polo Ralph Lauren slim custom-fit plaid sport shirt for $39.99 from LordandTaylor.com, American Eagle Outfitters plaid button down for $39.50, Cockpit navy blue plaid shirt for $44.99 from bluefly.com or the eco-conscious Swell the Josh Organic flannel shirt for $39.50. from Swell.com. Just remember to roll up the sleeves!

Frugal Fashion: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is sheerly beautiful

RosieThe new film "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," the third installment in the robot action series, was the top-grossing movie in the country last weekend. Audiences were treated to fighting robots in 3-D and a new leading lady, British Victoria's Secret model turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Whiteley replaces Megan Fox as Shia Labeouf's new love interest in the film. For the movie's media tour, the 24-year-old made waves on red carpets around the world with her statuesque, model physique and killer sense of style.

While in Brazil, she wore a black chiffon, belted Michael Kors fall 2011 dress; in Berlin, a sparkly metallic backless Naeem Khan design; and in London, a Christopher Bailey custom-designed Burberry navy gown.

At the Moscow International Film festival, which opened with a screening of "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," Huntington-Whiteley towered over the turquoise carpet in a weightless vision of chiffon. The Gucci gown, from the label's fall 2011 collection, features a sheer, playful, sexy skirt and a one-shoulder chartreuse top. The summer-perfect color blooms from the floral embellishments for an effect that is simply stunning.

Rosieskirts

To get Huntington-Whiteley's look without a designer-gown price tag, try a sheer black maxi skirt. American Apparel makes a full-length chiffon skirt for $46, or try the Sparkle and Fade maxi pleated chiffon skirt from UrbanOutfitters.com for $59 for a more textured look.

Rosietops

For a top, you'll need a one-shoulder design in a striking color. If you like the dramatic look of ruffles, try the Asos ruffle detail one-shoulder top for $13.79. For something a bit more subtle, but with the same color profile, get the Cheap Monday Tanya one-shoulder tank top from UrbanOutfitters.com for $30.

Rosiebelts

Tuck the top into a pair of hot pants, like the Lace dolphin shorts from Forever21.com for $13.80 and accessorize with a skinny black belt. For a better buy, you can go for a set of two with the Apt. 9 leopard skinny belt set for $24 from Kohl's or the Beamish black and white belt set from Aldo for $20.

Frugal Fashion: 'Margaret' star Krysten Ritter at the Fox Television Distribution bash

KristenritterAt the end of Fox TV's week-long screening extravaganza for foreign buyers in L.A., there was only one thing to do: throw an über bash at the Fox lot in Century City. Television stars and execs flooded the red carpet, and among the most stylish was the raven-haired actress Krysten Ritter.

You may remember her as the cheeky but charming Patty in the film "She's Out of My League" or as a regular on the Starz series "Gravity." She's also starring in the upcoming drama "Margaret" alongside Hollywood bigwigs Matt Damon, Anna Paquin and Mark Ruffalo.

The budding television star and lead singer of the indie band Ex Vivian is always striking, with a look that is distinctly rockabilly glam. Her darker-than-night  and signature red lips help define her ultra-feminine sense of style.

For the big party, Ritter chose a body-conscious, floral print minidress by MinkPink, bright coral-colored clutch bag by Sedgwick and nude heels by Loeffler Randall. The dress evokes that feeling fashionistas get every summer when they switch out their winter neutrals for eye-popping colors. Ritter's floral-print dress is a great, comfortable option for a summer party.

For a similar floral print dress, try the Asos cut-out dress for $59.99 in a fun and flirty red floral print and cut-out neck design, the floral print pencil dress, also from Asos for $36.93 or the Insight Inbetween Days dress for $59.50 from Swell.com.

Ritterdresses

For an extra pop of color get the Lorraine slim clutch by Guess for $30 or the Mundi Kylie wristlet from Kohl's for $28 for a more casual look.

Strap on any pair of nude or black heels and you're ready for summer.

Frugal Fashion: Mandy Moore, between 'Tangled' and 'Falling Slowly,' flexes her fashion cred

MandymooreSometime between Mandy Moore's hit song “Candy” in 1999 and now, I blinked, and she became  “someone to watch” in the fashion world. The singer, songwriter and sometimes actress was always adorable, but she’s given herself a complete revamp, turning the “cute” spaghetti-strap-tank-wearing, midriff-baring teeny bopper into a chic, sophisticated woman.

Moore recently popped up on our fashion radar when she blew away our own Melissa Magsaysay in an elegant, sparkly Monique Lhuillier dress at this year’s Oscars. Moore has also made recurring appearances on best dressed lists, such as InStyle magazine's Look of the Day feature.

The 26-year-old appeared most recently as the voiceof Rapunzel in Disney’s "Tangled," and is slated to appear in the film "Falling Slowly" opposite the dreamy Rodrigo Santoro next year, finding plenty of reasons to impress on red carpets everywhere.

Moore attended Lucky Magazine's First Annual "Lucky Shops LA" at Siren Studios in Los Angeles recently in a sheer top, double-breasted collarless jacket, black tapered leg pants and two-tone ballet flats. She accessorized her carefree look with a ring necklace and a white simple structured tote. Her barely there, fresh face makeup and effortless pulled-back hairstyle helped her nail the look.

Every part of Moore's outfit is super versatile and accessible for the fashionista on a budget. Each item is a great find to pair with any number of pieces you may already have in your closet. Moore's sheer T-shirt happens to be one of my closet staples. It's perfect to dress up or down and super comfy. For a scoopneck shirt that will easily become your go-to "T," snag the Favorite scoopneck T from Gap for $12.50. Dress up your shirt with a collarless, cropped sleeve jacket like Moore's. The 212 Collection tweed jacket from Kohl's is $31.99 and great to wear with office wear or a new dress.

Mandytopandcoat

Moore's pants remind me of the tapered-leg style often worn by stylish Brits Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller. Get the look with the Rory cotton-twill pant by Miller's brand Twenty8Twelve for $57.50 on Outnet.com or the Belted Twill pants from Forever 21 for $22.80.

Mandypants

Moore's structured tote looks great and can be the perfect "everything" bag -- it's big enough to fit your keys, makeup, wallet, phone and the rest of your life nicely. Aldo makes two great totes, the Cyphert tote for $45 and the Bazer tote for $34.98. Dillard's also carries an all-purpose tote by Kate Landry Paris for $55.30.

Mandybags

Mandyshoeszapposblog A good pair of flats is always a smart investment, especially ones you can wear to work, the store, lunch  or your favorite bar. To get Moore's two-tone look try the Annie Cybil cork and black patent flats from Zappos.com for $49.95. The cork texture is fun but the patent leather dresses up the shoe for that nighttime feel.

[Updated] Frugal Fashion: In a bikini or on the red carpet, 'Arthur' star Helen Mirren exudes confident style

HelenmirrenAt age 65, Academy Award-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren continues to take sex appeal to an entirely new level. Ever wondered whether you should you wear a bikini in your 50s and 60s? If you're Mirren, it's a definite fashion do. Uh huh, "Calendar Girls" anyone?

With no signs of slowing down anytime soon, Mirren is slated to receive a career achievement award on March 31 at CinemaCon, the annual convention and trade show for movie theater owners (formerly called ShoWest) in Las Vegas. She's also starring in  the much-anticipated remake of "Arthur," with Russell Brand and Jennifer Garner, due out in April.

Not only does Mirren prove that talented actresses of any age can compete with Hollywood starlets on the big screen, but the Brit can show them up on the red carpet as well. It's a fact that she still looks good in a bikini, but her real talent is masterfully exuding elegance, fully clothed.

Never one to shy away from an opportunity to look devilishly sublime on the red carpet, Mirren took the Sunday church suit and gave it a much needed makeover when she attended a special screening of her film "The Tempest," when it opened recently in London. She  added some peek-a-boo cleavage and a flirty bubble skirt. To transform her skirt suit from business attire to red carpet ready, she chose an uber chunky statement necklace, sleek silver envelope clutch and nude heels.

Mirrensuits

A skirt suit is always great for work but you'll need to find one with character if you're going to wear it to drinks after. Mirren chose a striped version but any pretty print, unique hemline or belt accent will turn your skirt suit into evening wear. The Tahari by ASL suit, belted jacket and skirt for $139.99 at Macy's has a fun belted jacket, The Nine & Co. tweed skirt suit at JC Penney for $59.99 comes in a chic tweed, or the pleated hem skirtsuit from Metrostyle.com for $47.99 has a flirty pleated hemline. [For the record: An earlier version of this post featured a Tahari skirt suit from Dillard's but that item is nearly sold out. It was replaced by the skirt suit from JC Penney.]

Mirrennecklaces

Statement jewelery pieces are an inexpensive way to add a little fancy factor to any outfit whether it's a skirt suit or a plain colored tee-shirt and jeans; and they make you feel like you're playing a modern version of dress up, without the boring pearls. Get Mirren's chunky jewelry look with the Fanned branches bibbed necklace from Banana Republic for $41.50 or the Tinley Road three layer necklace from Piperlime.com for $18.99.

Mirrenclutchandheels

For any style-conscious woman on a budget, to say that a go-to reversible clutch is a golden find would be a gross understatement. We're talking best-use-of-money-ever status. This reversible clutch by Nine West for $39.99 gives you a silver sheen for day and a little black clutch for your evening cocktail party. A good pair of nude-colored heels should leave you just as giddy. They go with anything and everything and can be your closet's best asset. Kohl's carries a pair of Elle Yalena platform high heels for $39.99.
