Hurley X Rick Griffin collaboration catches a psychedelic wave

Hurley X Rick Griffin 1
The surf and psychedelic artwork of the late artist Rick Griffin -- including the mop-headed surfboarding Murphy character -- adorns five new graphic T-shirts and a limited-edition run of Converse Jack Purcell shoes as part of Hurley's ongoing H Space artist collections series.

Three of the shirts offer versions of the Murphy caricature, another depicts a surfing Jesus and the fifth T-shirt boasts a colorful psychedelic design similar in style to his concert poster and record album artwork. (More detailed versions of the T-shirt art are posted at Hurley's website.)

The shoe collaboration (Converse and Hurley are both owned by Nike) features lightweight canvas Hurley Murphy T-shirtuppers in aquamarine blue with the Murphy character on the left tongue and Griffin's stylized signature on the right.

Griffin, a psychedelic artist known for record album and concert poster art he created for the likes of Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead, died in a 1991 motorcycle accident, but some of the iconic images he created have resurfaced in wearable form over the years (including on Vans footwear and in previous Hurley collaborations).

Tees in the current collection retail for $35 each, and the Hurley X Converse kicks are priced at $60. They're available online at Mollusk Surf Shop in San Francisco and Venice. We just checked with the Venice store, which reports it's got the full range of the collection in stock. The merchandise should be available at Hurley.com starting in mid-December, Hurley representatives say.

Hurley launches T-shirt line to aid Japan's tsunami relief efforts

Hurley_Japan_Relief_T-shirts

Hurley has just launched a new collection of T-shirts and is earmarking 100% of profits to benefit Japan's ongoing tsunami relief efforts.

Frequent Hurley collaborators James "Dalek" Marshall and Justin "Scrappers" Morrison volunteered their artwork for the project, which strikes a personal chord for the label's founder Bob Hurley who spent some time in that country during his youth.

In announcing the charity T-shirt on Hurley's website, Bob Hurley made the following statement: "My friends in Japan have provided inspiration to me since I was a child. Their recent tragic events in your country have reinforced my belief in the spirit of the Japanese people. Our prayers are with you and your families."

Available now through Hurley's online store, the Japan Relief shirt collection consists of four designs on black or white men's crewneck and women's V-neck silhouettes and sell for $23 (for the men's) and $22 (for the women's).

HOPE WHALE

Hurley is on to its next art-based collaboration.

The SoCal surf brand — which boasts a dedicated art space in Costa Mesa — has teamed up with artist, activist and singer for hard-rock band Incubus, Brandon Boyd, on an art‐inspired tee collection benefiting H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere), a nonprofit group focused on involving artists and their contributions in campaigns, programs and events internationally.

Boyd created a stylized watercolor-and-ink drawing of a blue whale blowing drinking bottles out of its blow hole — as though it was un-doing pollution — which Hurley printed on men's and women's tees and tanks.

WomensWhale-blk-f "My relationship with Hurley began over a decade ago and was born of a mutual appreciation for surfing, music, art and like minds," Boyd said. "We've done projects together in the past, but it seemed like it was time we truly put our collective heads together to make a real dent in a situation that affects us all, most importantly the swiftly growing problems in our oceans."

The shirts, which range in price from $28 and $32 and are made from 100 percent recycled cotton, will be available on Hurley.com beginning April 1, and at Buckle stores nationwide starting April 25 (all the proceeds at Buckle stores from the tees, along with a limited-edition water bottle, go to H.O.P.E.)

“Brandon is... a lover of surfing who champions ocean‐related causes, something that is very important to us here at Hurley,” said Greg Teal, music and entertainment marketing manager for Hurley.

The brand will celebrate the collaboration with an open-to-the-public party at Hurley's art space from 6 to 10 p.m. April 2 (1945 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa).

Hurley celebrates its new pop-up at the Americana at Brand

IMG_4739 O.C. brand Hurley celebrated its new pop-up boutique — and first-ever mono-brand store — on Friday night at the Americana at Brand shopping center in Glendale with a cocktail party open to the public.

The store, which will be open through Dec. 31, is not only a first for the brand, but also a study in economy. The company only spent $7,000 to put it all together, cutting costs considerably by repurposing displays and artwork from other company showrooms and events.

Hurley's existing employees pieced the shop together in seven days, cracking open shipping crates to create industrial-inspired clothing racks; piling up wooden palettes to make an ad hoc piece of art that doubles as an accessory rack (see below photo); and nailing up a massive cartoon-ish mural by artist Bigfoot, relocated from the brand's Orange County art space.

IMG_4744 "It's been really fun because none of us has ever worked in retail before," said Laura Wasser, vice president of marketing for the company. "It's like, 'Oh, we're supposed to have permits. Of course!' I mean, who knew?"

The Hurley pop-up, which we wrote about in the Nov. 14 Image section, features the brand's cool new collaboration with heritage brand Pendleton, a huge wall of denim choices and pieces from its past collaboration with Weezer.

Hurley's 'Tron' togs zip into PacSun Nov. 19

Rage_hurley

Apparel- and accessory-wise, Disney seems to be giving "Tron: Legacy" the "Alice in Wonderland" treatment -- pairing with designers and clothing brands that key in on every possible demographic and price point.

Last month, we told you about the jewelry, and earlier this month we noted the "Tron"-themed pop-up store at Royal/T in Culver City. Now we've finally got some more details on Hurley's "Tron: Legacy"- inspired capsule collection of men's and women's apparel that's zipping into select PacSun stores on Nov. 19. The clothes will be sold exclusively in those stores until widening retail distribution on Dec. 5. (The actual movie bows at theaters on Dec. 17.)

The collection, which will range in price from $29 to $129, includes the usual action-sports assortment of board shorts, T-shirts, denim, hoodies, lightweight outerwear pieces and New Era caps for both men and women, as well as some featherweight tank-tops and dresses -- and even a bikini -- for women.

Most of the pieces are black (with a few white pieces thrown in) with accent piping and screenprinting in the signature shades of blue or orange associated with the film.

Hurley hosts a solo exhibit by Southern California artist Dalek

Web
Surf and skate brand Hurley is dedicating its SPACE gallery in Costa Mesa to artist James Marshall — known professionally as Dalek.

The artist will exhibit a single 37-foot continuous wall mural painting — a vibrantly hued work of synergistic geometric shapes dubbed "Chaos on the Edge of Reason" — that will be offered for sale by the square foot and cut out and framed on demand during the show's Aug. 4 opening night party (7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 1945 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa).

It's not the first time the SoCal-based artist has worked with Hurley. Earlier this year, he collaborated with the brand on a pair of custom board shorts, which featured another one of his kaleidoscopic, multicolored prints. Dalek, who was roomies with Hurley-sponsored skateboarder Kris Markovich in his early career, was also commissioned to create a painting for Hurley's 225 Forest concept store in Laguna Beach, which stocks Nike 6.0, Converse and Hurley.

The new mural uses a whopping 75 Pantone colors, and will be priced at $200 per square foot, available in three sizes: 2-by-2, 3-by-3 and 4-by-4. A smaller companion painting and four limited-edition 36-by-48 works on paper will also be available.

And yes, you can decide which part of the painting you want to cut out. Just know that buying a slice means becoming a part of a larger project; everyone who walks away with a mini-mural will be photographed with their cut and interviewed on video. The resulting still photos and video will be used in a book and video on the project.

Hurley hosts an art-architecture exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum

Hurley Surf and skate fashion company Hurley is gearing up to host "Art Shack," an exhibit combining art and architecture. It is running from June 13 through Oct. 3 at the Laguna Art Museum.

Featuring 31 California artists — including Don Ed Hardy, Shag, Paul Frank, Sandow Birk and Hurley resident artist Jason Maloney — the hip exhibition asks artists to build their concept of a "shack" inside the museum's exhibit hall.

As yes, some of the shacks will be interactive — you can stroll inside them for a multimedia experience that often includes film and music.

Don Ed Hardy's "Tat Cat Shack (Tattoo Hut)," for example, will feature an activated tattoo machine. Artist Marnie Weber's shack will boast a Super 8 film, "The Red Nurse and the Snowman," while Craig Stecyk III will be erecting a small shack on the roof of the museum that will only visible through the security camera monitors (artsy, indeed).

Other participating artists include Kim Abeles, Esteban Bojorquez, Russell Crotty and Jed Lind, Laurie Hassold, Michael McMillen, Savanna Snow and Martin Wittfooth.

Breast intentions: Hurley's art chest auction ends today

Rage_chalke2_4 What's more stylish than a pink ribbon but shows you support the fight against breast cancer? How about a bustier that actress Sarah Chalke has hand-decorated with starfish and coral, or actor Ron Rifkin has scrawled his autograph on? To benefit Boarding for Breast Cancer, an organization dedicated to increasing awareness about breast cancer, surf apparel brand Hurley has been hosting an online auction of celebrity-adorned bustiers and T-shirts that ends today.
Some are simply signed pieces, while others are full-blown art installations that include gun holsters, wrapped leather belts, tattoo-art designs, and vintage lace.
Most of the pieces at the site are marked SOLD, but as of this posting, there are a couple cool-looking ones still in play -- including Chalke's starfish number (starting bid $125) and a red, white and blue T-shirt tricked out by U.S. Women's Soccer star Brandi Chastain (complete with signature and soccer-ball design) at a starting bid of $75, that would be the perfectly patriotic thing to wear into the voting booth Tuesday.
