Frugal Fashion: Alicia Keys front row during Paris Fashion Week

Alicia Keys

Paris Fashion Week runways have been generating buzz over the past few weeks, drawing editors, socialites, actresses and musicians for a taste of the lush fashion on display. But the runway isn't the only place generating style buzz. Some of the best looks have been spotted off the runways, in the front rows and in the streets outside the shows.  Songstress Alicia Keys was a prime example.

Keys appeared in the front rows at Chanel, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney and Givenchy. For each show she played with textures and accessories, but kept a classic black and white color palette. At Chanel, Keys donned a low-cut black vest and a jeweled head piece; at Valentino a sheer black dress with velvet skirt; for YSL, a black jumpsuit and lavish white coat, and for Stella McCartney, a body-conscious black and white dress with matching pumps.

Keys' most versatile look surfaced at the Givenchy show, where she wore a long tuxedo jacket, by Givenchy, white blouse with hidden buttons, black cigarette-leg pants and strappy heels. She wore her tuxedo jacket over her shoulders like a cape and a bold cross necklace. After the show, Keys serenaded Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci with her hit "Empire State of Mind" at the afterparty at L'Arc.

Frugal

To get Keys' Givenchy look, try the Really skinny pants from Gap for $59.95, and the Asos pintuck winged collar shirt from Asos.com for $53.72, featuring a front panel with hidden buttons. Accessorize with the black faux diamond cross necklace from Rods.com for $39.95 and sling the white blazer from Zara.com for $129 over your shoulders.

This goth-gone-chic look will have you ready for any runway life throws your way.

Happy shopping.

For an awards show as big as the Oscars, all the buzz tends to surround the red carpet on the big night. It transforms into the biggest runway in the world, with fans eagerly waiting to see whose designs the nominees are wearing and if their favorite celebs will show up on the best- or worst-dressed lists the next morning. But what about all the fabulous pre-Oscars festivities? The parties started well before the broadcast on Sunday, and there was plenty of high fashion to be had before the show.

"The  Help's" Emma Stone wowed in a flirty white lace Elie Saab couture dress at the fifth annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, "My Week with Marilyn" star Michelle Williams wore a black and white Givenchy dress to the seventh Annual Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film event, and "Entourage" star Emmanuelle Chriqui was among the stylish attendees in black and white at OK! magazine's pre-Oscars party hosted by CIROC vodka & LeVian at Greystone Manor in West Hollywood.

Chriqui channeled a chic 1970s dancing queen in a pair of high-waisted, wide-leg trousers, cropped white lace top and hoop earrings. Her disco-era separates were a refreshing break from the formal gowns that tend to barrage the awards season.

Emanblogpantsshirt

HoopsGet Chriqui's '70s look with the stretch twill high-waist wide-leg trousers for $88 from Anntaylor.com and the crop lace tank from Forever21.com for $8.80 or the Free People eyelet paper hearts crop top from Bloomingdales.com for $88. Keep your accessories simple and punchy with the 14-karat gold-plated twist-cut hoop earrings from AmericanApparel.com for $18.

This retro outfit is a free-spirited throwback to the '70s, but polished enough for modern party wear that won't go out of style.

The Hustle anyone?

Frugal Fashion: Dress like Oscar nominee Viola Davis

Viola Davis
Best actress nominee Viola Davis has been among the best-dressed on red carpets everywhere in the swirl of awards ceremonies and festivities  that culminates in Sunday's Academy Awards.  There was the one-shoulder, wine-colored Emilio Pucci at the Golden Globes; the bright pink dress by Juan Carlos Obando at the Academy Awards nominees luncheon; the black and white halter neck at the Writers Guild Awards this past weekend.

Perhaps the most elegant, the dreamy Marchesa gown she wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards at the end of January (above) would be our pick as an inspiration for any formal event. I'm thinking especially of prom -- but note to all teens: no, you cannot get away with a bodice cut as low as Davis'. Don't even think about it!

ThreeDresses

Instead we found a few more maidenly choices that employ the white and gold color scheme in the Alex Evenings dress with beaded bodice from Macy's (above left, $219); the Sequin Hearts one-shoulder dress, also from Macy's (above right, $119); and the Vivianne-Ivory vintage dress from Windsor ($189.90).

Jewelry

Accessories shouldn't fight with the gold detailing in these gowns, so go with only a few things. Opt, as Davis did, for drop earrings (like the twisted gold chain drop earrings from Claires for $6.50),  a statement piece on your wrist (like the studded rhinestone bracelet from Forever 21 for $12.80) and a jeweled clutch (like the sequined Gunne Sax by Jessica McClintock bag at Kohl's, which normally sells for $42 but was on sale for $29.40 when we looked).

For your feet, your heart will want stilettos, but listen to your brain and you'll be able to dance the night away in ballet slippers.  In a gown like this, who's going to look at your feet, anyway?

Frugal Fashion: Malin Ackerman goes mildly edgy at the Grammys

Malin Ackerman

Actress Malin Ackerman looked dressed up with just a hint of edginess in the Cushnie et Och dress she wore to the Grammy Awards Sunday night. The keyhole opening in the bodice was part of it, but so was the figure-hugging silhouette and the hard-to-find-this-season peplum. Chunky shoes anchored the look, which was accessorized with a simple clutch, bracelet and cocktail ring.

The dress, from Cushnie et Ochs' spring 2012 collection, retails for $2,295 at Bergdorf Goodman. But you can get a somewhat similar figure hugging, tiered effect for less.

Kohls Suite 7 tiered dress
For a dress try the Kohl's Suite 7 tiered sheath dress, in white, which normally sells for $120, but which we found on sale for $89.99.

Windsor black peplumOr change up the colors and go for the Black Peplum dress from Windsor for $39.90.

Forever 21's asymmetrical tiered dress is an option with a pop of bright color for $19.80.

For shoes, try the Katchy Cross Strap Pump from Payless for $29.99.

Payless Katchy Cross Strap Pump
Finish it off with the  Gold Tone Simulated Pearl ring from Kohl's, which we found on sale for $12, or the Iridescent Fairytale ring from Forever 21, $5.80.

Frugal Fashion: 'The Vow's' Rachel McAdams in spring florals

Rachel McAdamsFans of Rachel McAdams may know her best for roles in romantic movies, with appearances in  films such as  "The Vow," which opens Friday, and the tear-jerker "The Notebook," but the Canadian actress also has a talent for high fashion. From her first appearance at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in that sheer, red lace embroidered Marchesa gown, the fashion world took notice. Other notable festival attire included a hot white  Maxime Simoens dress and Monique Lhuillier spring 2011 high-waisted raw silk trouser with nude sequined corset.

McAdams once again put herself on the fashion radar at the Los Angeles premiere of the new film "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." She wore an electric blue short-sleeve knit top and floral maxi skirt from the Peter Som Spring 2012 collection.

The vibrant floral print could easily transition from a premiere to a daytime brunch with strappy sandals. For a comparable floral print skirt try the Velvet floral maxi skirt from Forever21.com for $20.99, Carnaby sheer maxi skirt by Mink Pink from threadsence.com for $94.50,  Glamazon floral maxi skirt by Cheap Monday for $44, also from threadsence.com.

Skirts
McAdams' knit top could be replaced by any number of colored tee-shirts or blouses, but for a similar blue get the basic scoop neck tee from Loft.com for $16.50 or the Mossimo Supply Co. Juniors scoop neck tee in oxygen blue from Target.com for $8.

Tops

ClutchOn the runway, McAdams' Peter Som look was shown with a pale blue pair of strappy sandals. For the premiere, she chose to accessorize with a blue snakeskin clutch and black Anouk pumps by Jimmy Choo. Snakeskin can be a bit pricey, but you can achieve the same look with any patterned or embellished colored clutch such as the Top Choice sequin clutch from Nordstrom.com for $20 and any pair of solid-colored heels you may already own.

Happy shopping.

Frugal Fashion: Jamie King helps launch Jason Wu for Target

Jamie King
Women everywhere seem to be coveting Target's latest designer collaboration Jason Wu for Target, slated for a Sunday (Feb. 5) arrival in stores and online. At the recent launch party in New York, Wu's celebrity fans Blake Lively, Chloƫ Moretz, Emmy Rossum and Jamie King stepped out in Jason Wu for Target to help show off the collection.

Jamie King, who plays the tightly wound Lemon Breeland on the CW's new "Hart of Dixie," hit  the red carpet in a Jason Wu for Target long-sleeved pointelle sweater in red ($40), pleated cap-sleeved blouse in red ($27) and the pleated skirt in navy floral ($30). She styled her outfit to resemble the ensemble that appears in the collection's lookbook, with black patent leather heels and ankle socks - it's the school girl look, re-imagined.

King's outfit is already on the frugal side, but if the mayhem that followed the launch of the Missoni for Target collection last September repeats itself and everything sells out, you can still achieve King's colorful look on a budget.

Tops
Get King's red top and cardigan effect with the T Tahari "Rachael" mixed media sleeveless top from Nordstrom.com for $54.90, the Tahari by ASL blouse, sleeveless pleated keyhole scoopneck from Macys.com for $39.98, Openwork knit cardigan from Mango.com for $24.99 or the Kensie girl long sleeve cardigan from Loehmanns.com for $29.99.

Skirts
For a similar pleated blue printed skirt try the Printed dip hem skirt from Topshop.com for $76 or the polka dot pleated skirt from Forever21.com for $14.80.

Accessories
Accessorize with the Aldo Rushiti patent leather pointy heels from 6pm.com for $31.99 and the Black lock cross body bag from DorothyPerkins.com for $49.

These colorful, versatile pieces will have you ready for spring.

Happy shopping.

Frugal Fashion: Rashida Jones at the Sundance Film Festival

Rashida Jones

Red carpets at the Sundance Film Festival are a little different. Park City, Utah, in January is too cold and snowy for the usual thin dresses, cut down to there and slit up to here. Instead parkas, scarves and knit hats rule.

The festival's most stylish set -- and we're counting Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell and Rashida Jones -- are braving the weather wearing long-sleeved minis over tights, casual ponchos, skinny jeans and boots.

Jones showed how to dress stylishly for a party last weekend at a dinner for the cast of her screenwriting debut "Celeste and Jesse Forever," a romantic comedy starring Emma Roberts and Elijah Wood. It was a star-studded evening on Main Street with guests including Jones' parents Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton; Andy Samberg, Chris Messina and film director Lee Toland Krieger. Jones shone in a textured black Olivier Theyskens for Theory dress and chunky gold jewelry by Lia Sophia. She kept warm under a cropped tuxedo blazer, ribbed tights and combat boots.

Rashidaoutfits

RashidablazerblogJones dressed in all black, but the charming details of her skirt and large buttons on her blouse buttons added definition to the single color palette. For a similar effect, try the Asos mini dress with circle inserts from Asos.com for $80.57.

Jones' look can also be achieved with a button-up blouse and textured skirt. Try the Pink Tartan scalloped tiered skirt from Last Call by Neiman Marcus for $84.50 with the drop armhole button front blouse from Topshop.com for $48.

Jones' fitted, cropped blazer added a bit of warmth and polish. For a similar piece, try the classic cropped blazer from Forever21.com for $27.80.

A pair of ribbed tights are a smart way to conquer cold  weather in style. Try the Hanes Silk Reflections control-top ribbed tights for $10 from Kohls.com. To finish the look, slip into the Steve Madden Graanie black leather combat boot with heel from Footnotesonline.com for $91 or the Vince Camuto Vestas boot from Shoptheshoebox.com for $129.

These pieces will keep you warmly chic for all your upcoming winter soirees.

Emmastoneblog

Watching the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards show last Sunday was a reminder of the power of a single accessory to transform a look.

Emma Stone, Charlize Theron and Michelle Williams expertly used accessories to add an extra touch of style and whimsy to their red-carpet gowns.

Stone accentuated her maroon and fuchsia pleated Lanvin gown by cinching the waist with a bold leather belt with jewel-encrusted buckle in the shape of an eagle. The belt, looking like something you might expect from a biker, was unexpected and a playful contrast to the ethereal quality of her gown.

Emmastonebeltbuckles

Add a similar punch of style to your next red-carpet gown with the Eagle belt buckle from Hotbuckles.com for $17.95 or the Rhinestone eagle belt buckle, also from Hotbuckles.com, for $19.95.

Charlizetheronblog

Theron wore a small Cartier museum piece jewel fastened to her Dior couture gown, proving that brooches aren't just for the over 50 set. They can be timeless pieces that add a hint of sparkle and elegance to any outfit, regardless of the generation.

Charlizetheronbrooches

For a similar piece, get the Monet brooch, crystal flower pin from Macys.com for $25 or the Austrian Crystal brooch - dogwood from Silverandjewelry.com for $49.

Michellewilliamsblog

Williams looked 1920s glam with her jeweled, vintage Fred Leighton headband and Jason Wu gown. The small detailing on the headband was a perfect addition of sparkle to her pixie-cut strawberry blond hair and petite earrings.

Michelleheadbands

Headbands can be a fun way to dress up a T-shirt and jeans or, like Williams, to add a youthful touch to an evening gown. For a similar piece try the Full Tilt rhinestone infinity headband from Tillys.com for $7.99, Candie's rhinestone headband from Kohls.com for $8, or the Cara Accessories masterpiece headband from Nordstrom.com for $32.

Frugal Fashion: Denver Broncos' Tim Tebow in check

TimtebowDenver Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow has already made a name for himself in the world of football.  The 24-year-old may be known for his Heisman trophy win at the University of Florida in '07, his two seasons as a rookie quarterback with the Denver Broncos and for being the man behind the Internet meme "Tebowing" -- the position Tebow assumes when he takes a knee to pray during games -- but what about his fashion sense?

On the field he's a rugged 6-foot-3 all-American boy with facial scruff, but when he hits the red carpet, it's an entirely different story.

At the 2011 Espy awards Tebow wowed the sports crowd and fashion set when he cleaned up in dressier attire. He chose black pants, a shirt with large purple checks, a patterned purple tie and sleek black vest. The mix and match patterns between the tie and dress shirt were playful and chic, and his addition of a vest was quite dapper.

Get Tebow's red carpet look in a dress shirt with purple checks such as the Neiman Marcus trim-fit check dress shirt from Lastcall.com for $49, Boss Black Jaron check dress shirt from Bloomingdales.com for $95.

Check dress shirts like Tim Tebow's
Tebow may have ditched the jacket at home, and casually rolled up his sleeves, but his vest adds some polish to the look. For a simple, dressy vest try the Alfani Red black, solid slim-fit vest from Macys.com for $75. It's safe to say that any male living in Los Angeles over the age of 15 owns a pair of standard black dress pants, but if you're that rare exception, Guess makes a reasonably priced versatile twill pant for $128 from Guess.com.

Vest and pants like Tim Tebow's
Finish the look with a purple silk tie with a subtle pattern such as the Calibrate woven silk tie for $49.50 or the David Donahue woven silk tie for $62.50, both from Nordstrom.com or the Chaps Paisley silk tie from Kohls.com for $36.

Purple ties like Tim Tebow's
You can catch Tim Tebow back in his player's jersey when the Broncos face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first playoff game of the season Sunday.

Frugal Fashion: Selena Gomez inspires New Year's Eve party dress

SelenaIt may be hard to believe, but 2012 is just around the corner. The passing year was full of big moments in the fashion world (Kate Middleton's royal wedding dress and John Galliano's gaffe to name a few) and a slew of unforgettable trends.

PHOTOS: Top fashion moments of 2011

Some fashionistas may already be looking ahead, planning their 2012 spring wardrobes, but there is still one event left this year that will require a bit of styling.

Finding the perfect New Year's Eve dress can be a challenge. If you're anything like me, you've had your eye on a couple of options since October. It's what you'll wear to ring in the new year, boogie down on the dance floor and have on for a magical new year's kiss. This type of occasion calls for something beyond fabulous, but definitely within your budget.

For style inspiration, we took a look at a dress Selena Gomez recently wore to an awards gala. The pop princess shone in a one-shoulder ruched silver mini and simple black heels. The one-shoulder silhouette is playful and elegant, perfect for New Year's Eve.

We found some one-shoulder dress options for the big night for under $100. For a dress almost identical to Selena's get the Matelasse one shoulder dress from Forever21.com for $27.80. Other party-ready options include the  Asos one shoulder dress with sequin sleeve for $72.72 from Asos.com, Disco Queen dress in silver for $98 from Nastygal.com or the BCBGeneration dress from Macys.com for $99.99.

Selenagomezdresses

FfselenabangleTo accessorize, try a cocktail ring, and some bangles. The chunky round studded bangle bracelets from Urbanoutfitters.com for $24 will make a great addition to any party dress.

Strap on a pair of your favorite dancing shoes and you're ready for the new year.
