Frugal Fashion: Rashida Jones at the Sundance Film Festival

Rashida Jones

Red carpets at the Sundance Film Festival are a little different. Park City, Utah, in January is too cold and snowy for the usual thin dresses, cut down to there and slit up to here. Instead parkas, scarves and knit hats rule.

The festival's most stylish set -- and we're counting Kate Bosworth, Lake Bell and Rashida Jones -- are braving the weather wearing long-sleeved minis over tights, casual ponchos, skinny jeans and boots.

Jones showed how to dress stylishly for a party last weekend at a dinner for the cast of her screenwriting debut "Celeste and Jesse Forever," a romantic comedy starring Emma Roberts and Elijah Wood. It was a star-studded evening on Main Street with guests including Jones' parents Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton; Andy Samberg, Chris Messina and film director Lee Toland Krieger. Jones shone in a textured black Olivier Theyskens for Theory dress and chunky gold jewelry by Lia Sophia. She kept warm under a cropped tuxedo blazer, ribbed tights and combat boots.

Rashidaoutfits

RashidablazerblogJones dressed in all black, but the charming details of her skirt and large buttons on her blouse buttons added definition to the single color palette. For a similar effect, try the Asos mini dress with circle inserts from Asos.com for $80.57.

Jones' look can also be achieved with a button-up blouse and textured skirt. Try the Pink Tartan scalloped tiered skirt from Last Call by Neiman Marcus for $84.50 with the drop armhole button front blouse from Topshop.com for $48.

Jones' fitted, cropped blazer added a bit of warmth and polish. For a similar piece, try the classic cropped blazer from Forever21.com for $27.80.

A pair of ribbed tights are a smart way to conquer cold  weather in style. Try the Hanes Silk Reflections control-top ribbed tights for $10 from Kohls.com. To finish the look, slip into the Steve Madden Graanie black leather combat boot with heel from Footnotesonline.com for $91 or the Vince Camuto Vestas boot from Shoptheshoebox.com for $129.

These pieces will keep you warmly chic for all your upcoming winter soirees.

[Updated] Fashion News: 'Get back on board,' Costa Concordia T-shirt screams

Costa Concordia
Whenever there is a disaster, T-shirts soon follow. Italians apparently are scooping up one that lambastes Francesco Schettino, captain of the sunken Costa Concordia cruise ship, with the very words Coast Guard official Gregorio De Falco screamed at him when he abandoned the faltering craft: “"Get back on board," with an expletive -- in Italian, of course. [Telegraph]

Lauren Scruggs
E! host Giuliana Rancic tweeted words of support and admiration to fashion blogger and model Lauren Scruggs, above, who is recovering from an accident in early December that cost her an eye and a hand when she walked into a spinning airplane propeller. "You will come out of this stronger with more meaning to your life," said Rancic, who underwent a double mastectomy recently. "Thanks...I believe your sweet words," Scruggs, who  is recovering, tweeted back. [People]

In fact, in Paris Jean Paul Gaultier showed a brick-patterned outfit uncannily similar to one Moschino showed in Milan. [The Cut] [This post  updated at 4:34 p.m. Jan. 20 to correct the misspelling of Moschino as "Moshino."]

Ungaro is faltering. After losing creative director Giles Deacon last year and chief executive Jeffry Aronsson in December, the design house is reportedly telling retailers it won't be able to deliver the spring-summer collection, and it's canceling appointments to show pre-fall. [WWD]

Isaac Merritt Singer was issued a patent for a sewing machine on Aug. 12, 1851. The rest is, of course, history. To celebrate that history, Singer has come out with a new model, the Singer 160 Limited Edition, that combines modern technology (like an automatic threader) with retro style, according to a news release sent out on Thursday. The machine will go on sale on HSN on Thursday. There's also a website where people can share stories about what Singer machines mean to them. That may sound odd, but more than 2,000 people have already shared their reminiscences of grandma and her old treadle model.

A class-action suit filed in San Francisco Superior Court on Wednesday against Forever 21 on behalf of one current and four former employees says the retailer owes back wages for doing loss-prevention security checks -- i.e., checking their purses before they went home, to make sure they weren't stealing anything -- off the clock and for denying them meal breaks. Frugal Fashion: Catwoman Anne Hathaway on the 'Today' show

Anne Hathaway on the "Today" show Anne Hathaway proved to be quite the fashion chameleon at this year's Academy Awards show. For her role as show host, she made a total of eight costume changes, including into a Valentino gown, fringed Oscar de la Renta, svelte blue Giorgio Armani and custom-made Lanvin tuxedo.

She's currently costarring with Jim Sturgess in the romantic film "One Day," and her next role involves suiting up in all black to play Catwoman in the film "The Dark Knight Rises," slated to open next July.

Hathaway made a recent "Today" show appearance to promote "One Day" looking like a girl on holiday in a peppermint candy-striped sheer sleeveless blouse and printed palazzo pants, both by Elizabeth and James. She accessorized with a pair of yellow strappy heels and a large blue and gold ring.

Palazzo pants are often thought of as pants worn only by the tallest celebrities and either too cute for the rest of us to wear or utterly ridiculous. They may resemble pajama pants in both shape and fabric (typically in a silk or other swoosh-able fabric). But the palazzo pant is meant to be grand -- as in, worn with oversized sunglasses and a glass of champagne in your hand while you frolic on a yacht.

The style was all over the spring runways, looking modern, with Fendi showing a deep purple pair and D&G with a cropped denim version.

Whether you're on a lavish vacation or simply going to meet your friends for lunch, create your own grand entrance in the A | Wear floral print palazzo pant for $73.18 from Asos.com, or for petites, the Asos petite pleated floral palazzo pant for $29.27.

Annepants

For a bold, mixed print look like Hathaway's, pair printed pants with the Rachel Pally Neva Top for $77 from Revolveclothing.com. For a fun cropped version, get the Striped crop tank for $8.90 from Forever21.com. If wearing palazzo pants and mixed prints seems too adventurous, get the more conservative Bar III sleeveless embellished front sheer top from Macys.com for $14.99 or the Hinge tie front tank from Nordstrom.com for $58.

Annering Try out your new look with any pair of solid-colored strappy heels or espadrilles and don't forget to accessorize. Get Hathaway's chunky jewelry look with the Asos cocktail ring rectangular with cobalt blue enamel for $14.64 from Asos.com.

Frugal Fashion: Diane Kruger at the InStyle Summer Soiree

DianeKruger German top model-turned-actress Diane Kruger has become a fixture at top designer runway shows and various events and red carpets around the world. She is usually on the arm of her beau, Joshua Jackson, and the stylish couple knows how to make an appearance.

The former ballerina is no stranger to best dressed lists. She is frequently featured on Vogue.com's coveted weekly 10-best-dressed list, and last year she was an honoree on the Vanity Fair international best dressed list.

Kruger possesses a sort of fashion diversity, artfully playing with classics and taking risks. When she walks a carpet, she favors Chanel, Lanvin, Calvin Klein and Jason Wu. Kruger gets glam in styles that include classic gowns, and dresses with plunging necklines and daring slits. On her casual days she is photographed looking tres Olsen-twin hobo chic in Ray-Bans, hats and cross body bags.

At the recent InStyle summer soiree in Los Angeles, Kruger donned a Jason Wu menswear inspired ensemble that included a blue tuxedo-style blazer, white button-up, black bow tie and trouser shorts. She balanced the menswear look with some feminine details -- note the  tuxedo color and fit, strappy sandal heels and tousled locks.

Try the menswear look for your next party in a fitted blazer with a feminine touch such as the Chiffon back blazer from Nastygal.com for $68 that features a sheer back. For something bolder, try the Silence & Noise boyfriend blazer for $78 from Urbanoutfitters.com. We've featured this versatile blazer before, but since it's such a great find, and comes in colors like pink, powder blue and fuchsia, it's worth another nod.

Dianeblazers

Get Kruger's tuxedo shirt look with the Jones New York pleated button down from Jny.com for $36.99 or the Loft tuxedo shirt from Loft.com for $44.50. If you want to go for a bow tie, you'll need the collared American Eagle boyfriend shirt for $39.50 from Ae.com.

Dianeshirts

Bow ties can be a playful addition to any collared shirt or the perfect dress-up accessory. Definitely borrow from a male friend or spouse, but if you want to own your very own (you never know when a spiffy bow tie will come in handy), snag the All Saints Spitalfields elder bow tie for $15 or for a shiny, dressier version, the American Apparel unisex sateen bow tie for $19 from AmericanApparel.com.

Dianebowties

To get Kruger's cropped-tuxedo look, get the Ya Los Angeles turning leaves trouser short from Piperlime.com for $49, Matelot trouser short from Forever21.com for $15.80 or the Charcoal shorts from Needsupply.com for $38.

Dianeshorts

Finish the outfit with a strappy pair of sandals to give the ensemble a girly feel. For a lower heel try the Naya Tova sandals from Zappos.com in the deep sea green / sea spray green leather for $83.88. For something with a little more height, get the BCBGeneration midnight blue strappy heels for $66 from Bluefly.com or the Madeline Reba wedge sandal from Amazon.com for $43.90 -- $60 depending on the size.

Frugal Fashion: William and Kate go cowboy chic on their overseas tour

CowboykatePrince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, might have finished their overseas tour of parts of Canada and California, but we're still buzzing. We just can't get enough of the duchess and her confident, elegant style.

The newlyweds are now old pros at dressing for public appearances. While in the U.S., Catherine wore a flowy Alexander McQueen gown to the BAFTA "Brits to Watch" gala, a hand-painted silver dress by Jenny Packham to a charity polo match in Santa Barbara and a white and navy ensemble to paint with kids at an art center in L.A.'s skid row. But who knew the royal couple would look so good when they went country in jeans and cowboy hats?

These outfits came out when Kate and William made an appearance at the BMO Centre in Calgary, Canada. The look was a far cry from something the duke and duchess would wear to tea with the queen, but it's difficult to watch a lively herd of livestock in heels.

William kicked off the Calgary Stampede in a blue and green tartan plaid shirt, a pair of blue jeans and boots, while Kate wore a pair of dark denim jeans, Temperley London rodeo shirt, boots and a silver buckled-belt. The couple stayed clear of the sun in matching crisp white cowboy hats.

To get Kate's look try a white blouse with a prairie feel like the French Connection vintage grace shirt (below, left) for $39.99 at Frenchconnection.com. For some country ruffles try the silk georgette blouse from Forever21.com for $24.80.

Kateshirts

For a rodeo, a nightclub or even a leisurely Sunday afternoon, there's no need to throw down a couple of hundred dollars for jeans. For a great pair of jeans under $100 try the Frances 18 low-rise boot cut jeans by Silver Jeans Co. for $75, Meltin Pot jeans from Yoox.com for $45 or the 1969 perfect boot cut jeans by Gap for $69.50.

Katejeans
For her accessories, Kate went the traditional western route with a bold silver-buckled belt and cowboy boots. Lasso the look with the Relic two-tone etched buckle belt from Kohls.com for $24 and the American Eagle Outfitters suede desert boot for $59.50.

Kateaccessories

The prince, looking more like a stylish Texas ranger in his rodeo gear, perfected the look of a modern cowboy. For a similar shirt, get the Polo Ralph Lauren slim custom-fit plaid sport shirt for $39.99 from LordandTaylor.com, American Eagle Outfitters plaid button down for $39.50, Cockpit navy blue plaid shirt for $44.99 from bluefly.com or the eco-conscious Swell the Josh Organic flannel shirt for $39.50. from Swell.com. Forever 21 T-shirts with a World Wildlife Fund twist

Wwf
Add the World Wildlife Fund to Forever 21's quirky collaborations (remember last year's kiddie-cum-hipster Minnie Mouse/Disney capsule collection?).

With this latest alliance, the L.A.-based chain chain is giving back, joining with the nonprofit WWF, the world's leading conservation organization.

Their T-shirt collaboration is comprised of three tank tops and five tees photo-printed with gorgeous animal faces, including an elephant, a tiger and a pair of gawking giraffes.

Silhouettes are drapey and slightly oversized, lending the collection the requisite Forever 21 hipster vibe. And the price, as usual, is nice; each tee sells for $14.80, with $1 from each shirt sold donated to the World Wildlife Fund.

Frugal Fashion: Rihanna pre-'S&M' at the Billboard Music Awards

Rihanna The fashion at music events can be transfixing -- more compelling, at times, than the Oscars. The attendees seem a little less stuffy; the dresses and personalities sometimes border on outrageous; and there never seems to be a shortage of moments where I find myself thinking, "What was she thinking?"

Last Sunday's Billboard Music Awards were no exception. Model Nayer draped herself in mens' neck ties, Sinbad attempted to rock a bejeweled pirate blouse, and Fergie went dominatrix in a Hervé Léger by Max Azria Atelier mini. On stage shades of pure white popped up in the form of a military trench for Mary J. Blige, a Michael Jackson-ish suit for Far East Movement frontman Kev Nish and a futuristic Tron-inspired number for Nicki Minaj.

Fire-haired songstress Rihanna, who took home awards for radio artist of the year and best female artist, stole the show in white leather lingerie for a steamy performance of "S&M."

But before Rihanna saddled up for some hip thrusting, pole dancing and a pillow fight with Britney Spears, viewers got to see a very different, much sleeker side of the artist when she walked the red carpet in a tailored men's Max Azria white suit, super-low V-cut blouse, a gold tassel necklace and nude Christian Louboutin heels.

Rihanna's menswear look is sexy and sophisticated, making her all-white attire perfect for your upcoming summer soirees. For a similar style jacket try the Linen boyfriend blazer by Armani Exchange for $130, linen blend blazer from Forever21.com for $27.80, or the Epaulet blazer by Calvin Klein for $99.

Rihblazers

For the trousers, you'll want a pair that is high-waisted for more of a feminine touch. Armani Exchange makes a great pair of trousers called the 20th pleated trouser for $88 or try the Nic + Zoe cotton side zip pants for $88.20 on Zappos.com. This look would also work with a pair of wide-leg trousers like the Bebe sailor pant for $54.99.

Rihpants

Rihanna's shirt features an extremely low V-cut. This may be appropriate for an awards show but for your next outing you can go as low or as high as you want with these frugal finds: The Sheer pocket shirt from the Gap for $59.95, Bellatrix pleated blouse from Nordstrom.com for $78, or the Sparkle & Fade Dolman blouse from Urbanoutfitters.com for $29.99.

Rihtops

Tassels have come back in a big way this season, adding a fun and frilly touch of '70s art deco. For a silver option wear the Twisted dropped-chain necklace from Charlotte Russe for $7.50 or for gold, the mesh loop tassel necklace from Topshop.com for $30.

Frugal Fashion: 'Scream 4's' Lucy Hale goes tribal at a Nylon magazine bash

LucyhaleLucy Hale's portrayal of the resident high school freak turned chic Aria Montgomery on ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars" has people outside the tween audience bracket taking notice. Nylon magazine featured the young star as someone to watch in their May "hot young Hollywood" issue and she appears in the new "Scream 4" film, giving her vocal chords a workout.

The 21-year-old Southern belle (Hale is from Memphis) may be queen of teen melodrama hits like "Pretty Little Liars," "Privileged" and the "OC," but she shows here she can rule on the red carpet as well.

At a Nylon Hollywood bash, the red-carpet newcomer appeared to be more of an old pro when she arrived in a weightless super low V-neck white blouse strategically tucked into a skintight BCBG tribal print skirt, a chunky woven black belt and vertiginously high black booties.

Tribal print skirts, swimsuits, dresses and even leggings are all the rage for summer with patterns that are at times raw and a little '80s. Hale's skirt print has pretty pops of neon yellow, giving her black and white print some gusto.

This is technically a frugal column but it doesn't mean we can't splurge once in a while, especially when that splurge is so readily available: Hale's  BCBG skirt is for sale at Bloomingdales for $178. For an even bolder color and print -- and at a truly frugal price -- get the red tribal print skirt from Forever 21 for just $17.80. If you like the black and white look, Urban Outfitters carries a black and white print skirt for $39 in a body-hugging longer length.

Lucyskirts

Hale's lightweight white blouse creates the perfect contrast to her body-con skirt. For a similar look get the Shelly top by Guess for $39, Verlain tank by Twenty8Twelve by S. Miller for $30 from TheOutnet.com, or the Sangu Draped beaded Rachel top by Rachel Roy at Macy's for $79.

Lucytops

Hale's woven belt is a great way to tie the flowy blouse and tight mini together. Any chunky black belt you might already own would look great with this look but if you're in the market to buy a belt, here are some fab finds: 2b woven accent belt from Bebe.com for $9.95, basket weave belt from Forever 21 for $6.80, or the Fashion Focus black woven belt from Bluefly.com for $22.99.

Lucybelts

Hale's shoes add a lot of edginess and character to her party outfit and go beyond the average black pair of booties. Her shoes feature a high ankle and an extra high heel. You could pull off this look with some straightforward booties but why not expirement a little? The following shoes will give some height and edge: The Amaze strapy bootie from Ninewest for $59.40, Envy women's throttle peep-toe ankle bootie for $62.40 from Endless.com, Chinese Laundry hide and seek bootie from Famousfootwear.com for $59.99, or the Kelsey Dagger shoes, Innis wedge booties from Macy's for $62.50.

Frugal Fashion: Mandy Moore, between 'Tangled' and 'Falling Slowly,' flexes her fashion cred

MandymooreSometime between Mandy Moore's hit song “Candy” in 1999 and now, I blinked, and she became  “someone to watch” in the fashion world. The singer, songwriter and sometimes actress was always adorable, but she’s given herself a complete revamp, turning the “cute” spaghetti-strap-tank-wearing, midriff-baring teeny bopper into a chic, sophisticated woman.

Moore recently popped up on our fashion radar when she blew away our own Melissa Magsaysay in an elegant, sparkly Monique Lhuillier dress at this year’s Oscars. Moore has also made recurring appearances on best dressed lists, such as InStyle magazine's Look of the Day feature.

The 26-year-old appeared most recently as the voiceof Rapunzel in Disney’s "Tangled," and is slated to appear in the film "Falling Slowly" opposite the dreamy Rodrigo Santoro next year, finding plenty of reasons to impress on red carpets everywhere.

Moore attended Lucky Magazine's First Annual "Lucky Shops LA" at Siren Studios in Los Angeles recently in a sheer top, double-breasted collarless jacket, black tapered leg pants and two-tone ballet flats. She accessorized her carefree look with a ring necklace and a white simple structured tote. Her barely there, fresh face makeup and effortless pulled-back hairstyle helped her nail the look.

Every part of Moore's outfit is super versatile and accessible for the fashionista on a budget. Each item is a great find to pair with any number of pieces you may already have in your closet. Moore's sheer T-shirt happens to be one of my closet staples. It's perfect to dress up or down and super comfy. For a scoopneck shirt that will easily become your go-to "T," snag the Favorite scoopneck T from Gap for $12.50. Dress up your shirt with a collarless, cropped sleeve jacket like Moore's. The 212 Collection tweed jacket from Kohl's is $31.99 and great to wear with office wear or a new dress.

Mandytopandcoat

Moore's pants remind me of the tapered-leg style often worn by stylish Brits Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller. Get the look with the Rory cotton-twill pant by Miller's brand Twenty8Twelve for $57.50 on Outnet.com or the Belted Twill pants from Forever 21 for $22.80.

Mandypants

Moore's structured tote looks great and can be the perfect "everything" bag -- it's big enough to fit your keys, makeup, wallet, phone and the rest of your life nicely. Aldo makes two great totes, the Cyphert tote for $45 and the Bazer tote for $34.98. Dillard's also carries an all-purpose tote by Kate Landry Paris for $55.30.

Mandybags

Mandyshoeszapposblog A good pair of flats is always a smart investment, especially ones you can wear to work, the store, lunch  or your favorite bar. To get Moore's two-tone look try the Annie Cybil cork and black patent flats from Zappos.com for $49.95. The cork texture is fun but the patent leather dresses up the shoe for that nighttime feel.
