Frugal Fashion: Jessica Alba summer-ready in a maxi

Jessica Alba in a maxi dress

Looking polished while running errands in the Southern California sun can be a challenge, unless you're a member of a certain celebrity set who makes looking good seem truly effortless. Their glamour extends beyond the red carpet, into the realms of everyday life -- where a casual trip to the grocery store in minimal makeup, jeans and a T-shirt can spark a paparazzi frenzy. Among the celebrities who excel at this particularly enviable skill are Angelina Jolie, Kate Bosworth and Jessica Alba.

Alba recently made an appearance with her daughter for Sunday brunch in L.A. She braved a heat wave and appeared picture-perfect in a long blue maxi dress, cashmere chartreuse cardigan by Theonne, a shady hat and royal blue wedges. She accessorized with a patterned hobo bag and classic tortoise shell sunglasses. Alba looked comfortable but well-put-together for her family day in the sun.

A long maxi dress is a chic way to dress for the summer heat. For a royal blue option, similar to Alba's, get the Scoop back maxi dress in azul by MANGO for $59.99 or the Must-have maxi dress by Victoria's Secret for $59.50.  For a light sweater, try the Halogen boxy v-neck cardigan from Nordstrom.com for $29.90.

Ffjessicadressessweater

Keep cool under the Mud straw fedora hat from Kohls.com for $16.80 and avoid squinting with the oversized tortoise stripe sunglasses from Charlotterusse.com for $5.50. Try the Boutique 9 Isabella wedge sandal in royal blue, $150 from Macys.com for a versatile pair of strappy sandals and sling the Geo print hobo, $22.50 from Forever 21 over your shoulder for an easy carry-all bag.

Ffjessicaaccessories

This outfit's elements are comfortable, summer staples that are sure to become your new go-to items for any sunny occasion.

Frugal Fashion: Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel at a Lakers game

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

If you're looking for a little celebrity PDA, look no further than courtside at an NBA playoff game. When the Lakers took on the Denver Nuggets during Game 7 of the Western Conference quarterfinals last  weekend, Kanye West was spotted with his arm around Kim Kardashian, whispering and holding hands with the reality TV star, while Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel were seen cuddling and making out between baskets.

Timberlake and Biel can really turn up the style dial for red carpet events, however it was refreshing to see the couple still chic but dressed down for a game. Timberlake cheered on the Lakers in a classic black henley, charcoal button-down, gray pants, worn-in boots and a plaid newsboy cap. Biel wore pastel blue skinny jeans, a sheer embroidered blouse, comfy cardigan and patterned flats.

Get Timberlake's relaxed look with the Ultra slim fit dyed chino pants by Calvin Klein for $69.50, Fox Reserve S/S Henley from 6pm.com for $24.99, Kill City pigment coated poplin shirt from UrbanOutfitters.com for $34.99, Belfrey Wesleyan tartan plaid ivy cap from HatsintheBelfry.com for $29 and the JD Fisk men's Denver boot from Endless.com for $89.15.

For an outfit similar to Biels, try the Embroidered blouse from Zara for $89.90, Marled knit cardigan from Gap for $39.99, Strut sulphur jean in baby blue by Superdry for $98 and the Jersey floral skimmer flat from Wet Seal for $14.50.

Frugal Fashion: Christian Siriano hatless in pastels at the derby

Christiansirianoblog

The hats at the 138th Kentucy Derby would rival any royal British social event, with stars such as Ginnifer Goodwin, Debra Messing, Cyndi Lauper and Mary J. Blige all donning oversized, elaborate headgear. It wasn't just women, either. Joey Fatone, for instance, wore a black-banded straw panama and Kellan Lutz an impish newsboy hat. But some attendees ditched the tradition and managed to look derby-appropriate, sans hats, in fun and flirty spring pastels.

Designer Christian Siriano, winner of "Project Runway" Season 4, attended the derby looking fierce in a pair of pastel blue trousers, a patterned T-shirt, blue blazer, shiny black shoes and his signature skinny rim frames. He appeared comfortable and chic in different shades of blue for just the right pops of color.

Siriano's blazer was a bold choice, helping him out on the red carpet without a headpiece. For a similar look, get the Oxford blazer from Zara.com for $159. Pair with a patterned T-shirt, such as the Asos top with all-over native print from Asos.com for $26.09 or the off white sponge pattern crew from Topman.com for $36.

Ffchristiantops

Continue the pastel theme with the tailored lightweight slim-fit khaki from $39.99 from Gap.com or the Ben Sherman slim chino pants in oxygen blue from Nordstrom.com for $89.90. Try a pair of leather sneakers with white soles, similar to Siriano's, for a bit of polish to finish the look. Try the Clae Powell leather sneakers from Zappos.com for $110 or the Clae Hockney shoe, also from Zappos.com for $61.99.

Ffchristianrest

These pastel blues, sleek sneakers and patterned tees will work as well for a summer party as the look did for the derby.

Coco

Coco Rocha has modeled for top fashion houses, such as Balenciaga, Chanel and  Christian Lacroix. And her signature fiery red locks have been featured in almost every major fashion magazine around the world -- she's on the May cover of Elle Brazil, in fact.

She also hosts the online mini series "Canada's best beauty talent." She recently took a break from all that to attend the sixth annual DKMS Linked Against Blood Cancer gala at Cipriani Wall Street in New York where she wore a belted peplum cocktail dress with houdstooth bodice and lace-up booties, both by Jason Wu.

The peplum has emerged one of the biggest trends for spring. Structured, peplum-adorned pencil skirts and flirty dresses, pretty peplum corsets and gothic lace peplums all made appearances on the spring runways at Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Cushnie Et Ochs.

To copy the look, add a new dimension to your silhouette with the Lucky date dress from Modcloth.com for $44.99 or get Rocha's vibe in separates with the Paprika belted peplum skirt from Rarelondon.com for $52.07 or Asos cute Peplum mini skirt for $54.54 and a textured white blouse such as the speckled geo blouse for $13.80 from Forever21.com.

It's time to retire your winter coats, bulky sweaters and rain boots for a lighter, brighter wardrobe. Emma Watson attended the premiere of "Struck by Lightning" in a Miu Miu floral skirt, Michelle Williams hit the red carpet in a floral and neon pleated Giambattista Valli dress and Dakota Fanning was spotted at the Vanity Fair festival party in a pink dress by Lanvin.

"Caroline and Jackie" star Marguerite Moreau put spring's best trends together when she stopped by the festival photo booth in a purple, blue and yellow flower print dress. She framed her florals in citrus brights with a lemon yellow blazer and tangerine heels by Aldo, nail polish and lipstick for extra pops of color.

Ffmargdresses

A floral print dress is a fun and flirty item that can last through the summer and into fall. Try the Ruffle floral belted dress from Delia's.com for $39.50, the DKNY jeans floral print dress from Macys.com for $54.99 or switch things up with the flower print bandeau dress from Topshop.com for $60.

Frugal Fashion: Emma Watson's pool party style at Coachella

Emma Watson

There was no shortage of parties during the first weekend of the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Celebrities from around the world were spotted partying it up in the desert during the first three days of the fest, including Emma Watson, Lily Collins and Josh Hutcherson. Some of the hottest soirees this year were hosted by fashion brands.  A|X Armani Exchange hosted the third annual neon carnival, Guess threw a pool bash and Mulberry hosted a monster-themed pool party at the Parker Palm Springs.

"Harry Potter" series star Watson attended the Mulberry party, keeping with the monster animal theme in the brand's fuzzy tiger playsuit animal print romper, simple black cardigan and the “Leo” sandal in elephant by Joie. She accessorized with the Mulberry mini Lily crossbody bag with tassels in oak, an animal tooth necklace and a gold and black belt.

Ffemma

A comfortable romper is a Coachella staple and a dependable go-to item when the weather heats up in the summer. For a romper in a fun animal print try the Aqua Romper button back abstract animal printed for $78 from Bloomingdales.com or the Type Z Elly Animal print romper $28.50 from 6pm.com. Grab a simple cardigan such as the women's cropped lightweight cardigan from Oldnavy.com for $19.94 and slip on the Replay sandals in light gray from Yoox.com for $89 to complete the pool party look.

Ffemmaaccessories

Watson's floppy brown hat is a must for parties under the sun. For a similar hat, get the Fringe bow floppy hat from Forever21.com for $19.80. Sling the Johnny Loves Rosie cross-body bag from Asos.com for $47.27 over your shoulder for a lightweight bag to carry the essentials. Continue to play with the animal theme with the American Eagle Outfitters tooth necklace for $12.50 from ae.com and the  Asos lionhead chain belt from Asos.com for $27.27.

Watson's pool party ensemble can easily be re-created for those Coachella-bound for Round 2 this weekend. Just don't forget the sunscreen!

Frugal Fashion: Olivia Palermo dresses up in denim

Palermo

Light denim may not be the obvious choice for a Hollywood premiere party -- or depending on who you ask, a definite no-no for any occasion outside of a casual shopping trip or lunch date -- but leave it to socialite Olivia Palermo to use her gift of sartorial versatility to transform the look from day to night. The new face of Rochas perfume is proving she's more than capable of evolving from ex-reality television star to budding fashion icon.

Palermo recently attended the premiere of the HBO original series "Girls," in New York City where she dressed up a pair of ordinary light jeans. She wore a white button-down shirt by Masscob, Pearl Queen sequin jacket by French Connection, blue Dior cross body bag and purple silk cap-toe pumps by Giambattista Valli. Playing off the idea of jeans and a white T-shirt, she achieved a party-ready spin with the addition of a sequin jacket and cap-toe pumps.

Oppantstopjacket

Palermo's ensemble is full of handy investment pieces for any fashion lover on a budget. To get her look, try an all-purpose pair of American Eagle skinny crop jeans in light authentic indigo for $39.50 and the RSVP Jelissa blouse from Zappos.com for $89.99. Both these pieces are staples for any season. Palermo may have chosen a skinny jean, but a boyfriend fit could also work with heels and a sequin jacket for a bit of structural contrast. Try the vintage straight jean in old faithful wash from Jcrew.com for $168 and for a sequin jacket, get the BB Dakota Royale jacket in gunmetal for $33 from 6pm.com.

Opaccessories

For a functional, stylish cross-body bag, get the March Fisher handbag in teal, $78 at Macys.com, the Cole Haan "Jitney" all-cross body bag in Pacific PA from LordandTaylor.com for $98 or the Hobo cristel bag from Zappos.com for $98. Finish with the Vince Camuto Jorgie colorblock pump, $89.99 at Dillards.com that features a patent blue cap-toe.

[Updated] Frugal Fashion: Selena Gomez & Carlos Knight at the Kid's Choice Awards

Selena Gomez and Carlos Knight

The Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards brought out the channel's hottest young stars to the bright orange carpet at the USC Galen Center last weekend. The show was notably more casual than, say, the Oscars or Golden Globes -- knowing there is a distinct possibility you may get "slimed" may be a contributing factor -- but the attendees managed to look appropriate and stylish without the floor-length gowns or tuxedos.

Actress-singer (and Justin Bieber's girlfriend) Selena Gomez and actor Carlos Knight stood out in the crowd of mini-dresses and slacks in looks that were fresh and playful. Gomez, who took home the award that night for favorite television actress, stars on the Disney channel's "The Wizards of Waverly Place," while Knight plays Owen Reynolds in the Nickelodeon show "Supah Ninjas."

Gomez chose a cropped bustier and skirt, both from the Dolce & Gabbana spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection; orange and pink studded stilettos by Cesare Paciotti; and jeweled hoop earrings by Ippolita jewels. Gomez's bustier could easily transition from awards show attire to appropriate wear for next weekend's Coachella music festival, with cut-off jeans and maybe a flower in her hair. For a similar top, get the new romantics woven bustier by Free People for $78 or the textured foil crop bustier by Free People for $38 or Silence and Noise denim bustier from Urbanoutfitters.com for $39.99.

Selena2012bustiers

Gomez chose a jewel-embellished, mixed-pattern skirt to pair with her bustier. For a versatile style you can wear with any top, try the Rare metallic PU skater skirt from Asos for $69.83. Add an extra pop of color in the Pablo pointed court shoes from Topshop.com for $140, and accessorize with the Hemetite crystal hoop earrings from Windsor for $12.90.

Selena2012skirtshoesearring

Knight appeared laid-back but polished in a striped T-shirt, knit blazer and relaxed khakis. He accessorized with a simple gray scarf and wore a pair of gray high-top sneakers with the laces left loose and untied. For a similar top, jacket and pants, get the Navy Marl and white stripe t-shirt for $32 from Topman.com, American rag jacket knit blazer from Macys.com for $79.50 and the 1969 denim washed garment dye khakis from Gap.com for $59.95.

Knight's lightweight scarf is a nice finishing touch, perfect for a cool spring evening. Get a similar look with the Color foulard scarf from H.E. by Mango for $35.95. For a pair of gray high-tops, try the

[Updated] Frugal Fashion: Elizabeth Banks of 'The Hunger Games'

Elizabeth Banks
Elizabeth Banks, who plays the high-strung  Effie Trinket in the film "The Hunger Games," has been busy firing up red carpets across the globe promoting her new film. She's fully embraced this season's spring brights and sequins in vibrant shades of orange and sparkles that would rival Miss Trinket's most dazzling dresses. At the film's premiere in Berlin she chose a deep orange, floor-length Elie Saab gown, in Paris a rose- and sequin-embellished sheath by Marc Jacobs, and in Los Angeles a neon orange Atelier Versace one-shoulder mini-dress.

Banks continued to dip into the orange hues at the Restoration Hardware spring 2012 launch party in Los Angeles last week in a tangerine, belted frock by Andrew Gn, Christian Louboutin metallic peep-toe mosaic pumps and woven teardrop earrings by Irene Neuwirth. The deep V-neck is fun and flirty while the belted, cinched waist offers a shape that will flatter a variety of body types at any age.

Dresses
If you're not quite ready to embrace the acid neons of spring, a color similar to Banks' tangerine may ease the transition to a brighter color palette. Try the  Calvin Klein sleeveless pleated dress from Lord & Taylor for $128, Jessica Simpson women's V-neck belted cotton dress from Amazon.com for $98, Eliza J belted portrait collar taffeta dress from Nordstrom.com for $148 or the AK Anne Klein pleated fly-away front dress from Lord & Taylor for $119.

Accessories
Banks' earrings are simple, elegant and don't compete with the color of her dress. For a similar pair get the threaded teardrop earrings from Forever21.com for $4.80. She went for a pair of metallic Louboutins to finish her look. Get a similar effect with the Rsvp Brendis gold metallic snake print pump from 6pm.com for $23.70.

All the bright hues are evidence enough that in the world of fashion, spring is in bloom.

Whether it's a knicker-grazing pair of hot pants, party-ready high-waist sequin shorts or a pair of denim cutoffs, celebrities such as Selena Gomez and Michelle Williams have already been spotted sporting all varieties of this hot spring trend.

At the Maiyet launch celebration for Barneys New York, "Pan Am" leading lady Christina Ricci wore a pair of hand-loomed Tanchoi orange shorts by Maiyet.
