Frugal Fashion: Olivia Palermo in spring prints

  Olivia Palermo
Socialite Olivia Palermo has become a regular fixture on the fashion circuit. Chances are you've seen the slender brunet photographed in the front row of almost every major show. New York Magazine's 2007 "It girl" has made a name for herself in the fashion world with her impeccable style. She's known for appearing effortlessly put together in mix-and-match patterns, bold textures and mounds of accessories.

The 26-year-old has rebounded quite nicely from her brief stint on the reality television show "The City," where her frenemy antics awarded her villain status. Since the show, she's signed with the Wilhelmina Models agency, launched a jewelry line with Roberta Freymann, been the face of the London label Freda and most recently scored a gig as the face of the new Rochas scent.

At the Topshop Unique show during London Fashion Week recently, Palermo was back in front of the cameras, embracing this season's explosive prints. She wore a Topshop neon yellow top, black fur-trim blazer and Topshop trousers festooned with tropical flowers. Her feet were clad in leopard print.

For a similar pair of blooming spring trousers, try the Vila Oriental floral printed pants for $62.67 from Asos.com, the floral print trousers from H&M for $14.95 or for a more subtle pair get the floral print trousers from Zara.com for $79.90

pants
Palermo's solid black blazer, plain yellow top and slouchy camel tote balance the pattern, keeping the outfit from looking cluttered. Get the same effect with the Chiffon puff-sleeve blouse in "Dent De Lion" from Americanapparel.com for $46 or the sleeveless neon yellow blouse from H&M for $29.95. Pair with a boxy double-breasted blazer from Forever21.com for $32.80, or the ruffle waist jacket, also from Forever21.com for $27.80.

shirts, blazers
Palermo took a risk by adding another pattern to her ensemble with the leopard print shoes but the combination works for an extra punch since the other pieces she's wearing are solid. Try the Sam Edelman Portney heels in "new nude leopard" from 6pm.com for $84 or for an enticing alternative to the heel get the Animal print tuxedo flats from Express.com for $31.43 or the Damiann booties by Steve Madden for $62.98.

In fashion, breaking the rules is always more fun.

Happy shopping.

Frugal Fashion: Diane Kruger at the InStyle Summer Soiree

DianeKruger German top model-turned-actress Diane Kruger has become a fixture at top designer runway shows and various events and red carpets around the world. She is usually on the arm of her beau, Joshua Jackson, and the stylish couple knows how to make an appearance.

The former ballerina is no stranger to best dressed lists. She is frequently featured on Vogue.com's coveted weekly 10-best-dressed list, and last year she was an honoree on the Vanity Fair international best dressed list.

Kruger possesses a sort of fashion diversity, artfully playing with classics and taking risks. When she walks a carpet, she favors Chanel, Lanvin, Calvin Klein and Jason Wu. Kruger gets glam in styles that include classic gowns, and dresses with plunging necklines and daring slits. On her casual days she is photographed looking tres Olsen-twin hobo chic in Ray-Bans, hats and cross body bags.

At the recent InStyle summer soiree in Los Angeles, Kruger donned a Jason Wu menswear inspired ensemble that included a blue tuxedo-style blazer, white button-up, black bow tie and trouser shorts. She balanced the menswear look with some feminine details -- note the  tuxedo color and fit, strappy sandal heels and tousled locks.

Try the menswear look for your next party in a fitted blazer with a feminine touch such as the Chiffon back blazer from Nastygal.com for $68 that features a sheer back. For something bolder, try the Silence & Noise boyfriend blazer for $78 from Urbanoutfitters.com. We've featured this versatile blazer before, but since it's such a great find, and comes in colors like pink, powder blue and fuchsia, it's worth another nod.

Dianeblazers

Get Kruger's tuxedo shirt look with the Jones New York pleated button down from Jny.com for $36.99 or the Loft tuxedo shirt from Loft.com for $44.50. If you want to go for a bow tie, you'll need the collared American Eagle boyfriend shirt for $39.50 from Ae.com.

Dianeshirts

Bow ties can be a playful addition to any collared shirt or the perfect dress-up accessory. Definitely borrow from a male friend or spouse, but if you want to own your very own (you never know when a spiffy bow tie will come in handy), snag the All Saints Spitalfields elder bow tie for $15 or for a shiny, dressier version, the American Apparel unisex sateen bow tie for $19 from AmericanApparel.com.

Dianebowties

To get Kruger's cropped-tuxedo look, get the Ya Los Angeles turning leaves trouser short from Piperlime.com for $49, Matelot trouser short from Forever21.com for $15.80 or the Charcoal shorts from Needsupply.com for $38.

Dianeshorts

Finish the outfit with a strappy pair of sandals to give the ensemble a girly feel. For a lower heel try the Naya Tova sandals from Zappos.com in the deep sea green / sea spray green leather for $83.88. For something with a little more height, get the BCBGeneration midnight blue strappy heels for $66 from Bluefly.com or the Madeline Reba wedge sandal from Amazon.com for $43.90 -- $60 depending on the size.

Frugal Fashion: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is sheerly beautiful

RosieThe new film "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," the third installment in the robot action series, was the top-grossing movie in the country last weekend. Audiences were treated to fighting robots in 3-D and a new leading lady, British Victoria's Secret model turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Whiteley replaces Megan Fox as Shia Labeouf's new love interest in the film. For the movie's media tour, the 24-year-old made waves on red carpets around the world with her statuesque, model physique and killer sense of style.

While in Brazil, she wore a black chiffon, belted Michael Kors fall 2011 dress; in Berlin, a sparkly metallic backless Naeem Khan design; and in London, a Christopher Bailey custom-designed Burberry navy gown.

At the Moscow International Film festival, which opened with a screening of "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," Huntington-Whiteley towered over the turquoise carpet in a weightless vision of chiffon. The Gucci gown, from the label's fall 2011 collection, features a sheer, playful, sexy skirt and a one-shoulder chartreuse top. The summer-perfect color blooms from the floral embellishments for an effect that is simply stunning.

Rosieskirts

To get Huntington-Whiteley's look without a designer-gown price tag, try a sheer black maxi skirt. American Apparel makes a full-length chiffon skirt for $46, or try the Sparkle and Fade maxi pleated chiffon skirt from UrbanOutfitters.com for $59 for a more textured look.

Rosietops

For a top, you'll need a one-shoulder design in a striking color. If you like the dramatic look of ruffles, try the Asos ruffle detail one-shoulder top for $13.79. For something a bit more subtle, but with the same color profile, get the Cheap Monday Tanya one-shoulder tank top from UrbanOutfitters.com for $30.

Rosiebelts

Tuck the top into a pair of hot pants, like the Lace dolphin shorts from Forever21.com for $13.80 and accessorize with a skinny black belt. For a better buy, you can go for a set of two with the Apt. 9 leopard skinny belt set for $24 from Kohl's or the Beamish black and white belt set from Aldo for $20.

Frugal Fashion: "Bad Teacher" Cameron Diaz rocks a summer romper

CameronIt's hard to imagine actress Cameron Diaz in anything but a snow white bikini, gripping a surfboard as a Charlie's Angel on the beach. Sure it was for a film, but Diaz is famous for wearing clothing that accentuates her best assets, both on and off the set. At nearly every major appearance, Diaz is sure to be in a look that gives more than a peek at her killer legs and super-hero toned arms.

The 39-year-old has been busy promoting her new film "Bad Teacher," which hits theaters June 24, starring opposite Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake.

At a photo call for the film in Madrid, Diaz showed off her signature legs, looking summer-ready in a crisp white Equipment romper, fiery red belt and pink tweed blazer by Elizabeth and James. She accessorized with a navy and gold braided necklace by Giles & Brother and strappy heels by Sergio Rossi.

Diaz' romper could actually be the most versatile summer closet staple. Wear it over a bathing suit by the pool or go effortlessly glam like Diaz with the right accessories. With so many colors, patterns and styles available it might be hard to narrow it down to just one, but a plain white version is always a good investment. For a sleeveless style go for the Planet Gold romper from Macys.com for $14.99. For something a little more casual try the Sparkle and Fade Dolphin short romper from Urbanoutfitters.com for $59 or the Roxy Rollick romper from Roxy.com for $39.50. If you're looking for a little more detail the Asos linen bandeau pleated short playsuit features a flirty bow detail for $60.34.

Cameronrompers

The best part of Diaz's outfit is definitely her belt. The color screams "look at me" and it gets ample attention against the white romper. For a similar effect get the Pieces Lisbeth slim jeans belt for $12.07 from Asos.com or the Unisex solid web belt with leather buckle from American Apparel for $30. To go for Cameron's chunky belt look get the Wide quilted belt from Armani Exchange for $58.

Cameronbelts
It's always nice to have a light jacket for when those warm summer days turn into heavenly nights. The Asos soft draped suit blazer in fuchsia for $86.20 will keep you warm and add a nice pop of color. For something a little redder, snag the Carmine blazer from Anthropologie.com for $98 or the P.M.E. blazer in houndstooth red and white from Yoox.com for $160.

Cameronjackets

Wear your new romper with anything from a pair of strappy sandals to your highest heels.

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Kanye West gets into scarves, Reese Witherspoon wears pink, American Apparel launches denim line

Akanye Rapper Kanye West, a dabbler in fashion who recently completed a design internship at Fendi, is launching a collection of scarves incorporating artwork inspired by his album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy." The limited-edition pieces will be sold exclusively at the Colette boutique in Paris and online at M/M (Paris). [Telegraph]

Splendid, known for its soft basic wardrobe pieces for men, women and children, is coming soon to the Grove in Los Angeles. Look for a summer opening. [Mondette]

Splendid's expansion is good news, especially because the retail scene in L.A. seems to have been especially hard hit in the past year or two with a number of boutiques (including Fred Segal Fun, Tracey Ross and Petro Zillia) closing up shop. [PopSugar LA]

When Reese Witherspoon married Jim Toth recently she really was a blushing bride: She wore a custom-designed Monique Lhuillier blush-hued gown with a Chantilly lace corset bodice and full tulle A-line skirt. A nontraditional choice but she did look pretty in pink. [People]

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Sylvester Stallone to create menswear, Kendall Jenner models for prom and Dov Charney is sued again

Asly Sylvester Stallone, best known for characters who wear camouflage gear or T-shirts and sweats, has set up a company called Sly Inc. as a precursor to launching a men's clothing line. The company is owned by Stallone, veteran beauty and retail executive Michael Henry and other unidentified financial backers. Expect to see a little Rambo, a little Rocky. [WWD]

Oscar winner Melissa Leo wore a midnight blue Marc Bouwer velvet dress paired with dance flats to the premiere of HBO's "Mildred Pierce" miniseries (which airs beginning Sunday). Flats? High heels are foot-ruiners, she says, adding: "I think they look vile. I think they make women look like they're about to fall over." Three cheers for an actress who puts function before form. [StyleList]

Kendall Jenner, 15, doesn't make headlines the way big sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian do -- yet. But her modeling career seems to be going fine, and she's starring in a campaign for prom dress designer Sherri Hill. [Daily Mail]

Costume designer Chris Hargadon relied on meticulous research to re-create Jaqueline Kennedy's wardrobe for the upcoming miniseries "The Kennedys." In the series, Katie Holmes is a ringer for the first lady and the clothes are spot-on too. The series debuts on the Reelz channel on April 3, and in an interview posted on the channel's website Hargadon says he pored over old photographs and shopped vintage fabrics to copy Jackie Kennedy's famous styles. Elizabeth Taylor, who died Wednesday, was among the most successful stars to dabble in the beauty business. American Apparel founder Dov Charney is being sued -- again -- for allegedly forcing sex on another former employee. Your morning fashion and beauty report: Rumors that Riccardo Tisci will replace John Galliano at Dior, American Apparel's new troubles

Ajohn

Worry is growing in the fashion industry that the pressures are driving executives and creative talent to the brink. (Could Exhibit A be chief designer John Galliano's meltdown and firing from Dior?) [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Speaking of the Galliano scandal, a tweet Tuesday night from style.com editor and Harper's Bazaar writer Derek Blasberg that "Riccardo Tisci is CONFIRMED at Dior" has the Twitterverse in an uproar of rumors that Givenchy's Tisci will be Galliano's replacement. But there is also new speculation that it will be Alber Elbaz of Lanvin.  Time will tell. [The Cut]

Troubles keep coming for Los Angeles-based American Apparel, which has been struggling to stay afloat amid slumping sales and financial woes. My colleague Andrea Chang reports that chairman and chief executive Dov Charney is the subject of a lawsuit filed by a former sales employee who accuses him of holding her captive and forcing her to perform sexual acts starting soon after she turned 18 years old. The lawsuit, filed in New York, seeks $250 million in damages. It accuses Charney of sexual harassment, retaliation, gender discrimination and creating a hostile workplace. Company spokesmen deny the claim, but also say they had started "confidential binding arbitration" with her before the lawsuit was filed. [Los Angeles Times]

Supermodel Claudia Schiffer unveiled her first apparel line during Paris Fashion Week, and says her days of strutting the runway are over for good. Vogue UK describes the clothes as a "sumptuous array" of gray, black, navy and oat-colored sweaters and cashmere dresses.  [Vogue UK]

Frugal Fashion: Anne Hathaway's classic look at a 'Love and Other Drugs' screening

Lcexqjnc It seems like actress Anne Hathaway is everywhere this year. She was recently seen on the cover of Vogue magazine, has been making public appearances galore to promote her new movie "Love & Other Drugs," and was just announced as co-host of the 83rd Academy Awards with actor James Franco. She's no stranger to the Oscars, with a nomination for playing the troubled Kym in "Rachel Getting Married" and has been in more than 15 films -- and she's only 28. Phew, just thinking about her career is making me a little fatigued, but for a busy girl, Hathaway always looks put together.

At a recent screening of "Love & Other Drugs" in NYC, Hathaway wore a tuxedo-inspired satin white shirt tucked into a long black Salvatore Ferragamo pleated skirt. I can't say if she was trying to emulate the essence of Carolina Herrera -- think Herrera backstage at a show in a crisp white shirt tucked into a long skirt -- but the simplicity of Hathaway's look perfectly channeled Herrera's signature class and distinction.

She radiates natural beauty with her silky, wavy hair, ivory skin and big brown eyes. At the premiere she kept her jewelry at a minimum, making her red lips her best accessory. Copying Hathaway's red lips are a big part of this look, but wearing uber red lipstick can be tricky so be sure to check out this week's "Your Stylist" column with Melissa Magsaysay on how to do it right.

Shirts

For a shirt similar to Hathaway's you'll need a classic white or ivory blouse. Try this non-iron fitted sateen shirt from Banana Republic for $59.50 on the left. For an even more frugal aternative, get this Style&Co Rhinestone tuxedo shirt from Macy's for $24.98 on the right. Not only can you tuck these shirts into a long skirt for an evening look with heels, you can pair them with a pencil skirt or slacks for work and with denim on the weekends.

  Skirts

Long skirts made quite a comeback for fall. No longer just for the elderly school teacher clasping a ruler, these modern versions sit just above or on the waist and fall well below the knee in materials that range from leather to chiffon to jersey cotton. Hathaway chose a bulky pleated skirt, but for more versatility these skirts will allow you to pull off a variety of looks.  From left, the Investments long "Travel Smart" long gored skirt from Dillards for $21.60, American Apparel's Chiffon double-layered full length skirt for $58, long skirt from H&M for $19.95 and the Pleated Maxi from Topshop for around $65.

These white shirts and long skirts are super versatile and will work with a number of items you'll already have in your closet.

Happy shopping.

Well, finally! Clarence House has announced the long, long, long anticipated engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton. [LAT] All the Rage cannot wait for the royal wedding next year, of course! But meanwhile, don't expect Middleton to turn into the fashion plate the prince's mum, Diana, was.
