Fashion News: Elizabeth Berkley, Greg Lauren expecting first baby

Kanye West guests

Artist/actor/occasional fashion designer Greg Lauren (nephew of Ralph Lauren) and wife actress Elizabeth Berkley (who starred in "Saved by the Bell") are expecting their first child. The couple married in 2003. [People]

Also expecting: Vanessa Minnillo and Nick Lachey. [Us Weekly]

Rapper Kanye West showed his second women's collection in Paris, after debuting his first last year to what might kindly be called tepid reviews. To quote Luke Leitch writing in the Telegraph about this year's show, "He may be utterly unqualified to show as a designer in Paris, but he certainly has chutzpah." And he drew a hip crowd, including Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz and Sean Combs. [Telegraph]

Besides West and Chanel's crystal cave, which Fashion News mentioned previously, other attention-getters at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday included Alexander McQueen's floral dresses and Valentino's leather and intricately beaded dresses. [Cut]

Sarah Burton, McQueen's creative director, says the looks she sent down the runway were inspired by fungi. And she meant that in a good way. [Telegraph]

The maker of the popular Brazilian Blowout hair-smoothing treatment has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit for about $4.5 million. That comes out to about $35 per treatment (to a maximum of three) for each customer who says she was harmed by the product, plus $75 per bottle purchased for each stylist. Earlier the manufacturer reached a settlement with the California attorney general's office to warn stylists and consumers that the products contain formaldehyde, which can cause respiratory problems and is a known carcinogen. Top 10 fashion trends of 2011

10collage4

In 2011, fashion was more accessible than ever before. The world's newest fashion icon and royal, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was photographed shopping at affordable chain stores. Designers talked directly to fans on TV and Twitter, and sold cheap chic collections on EBay, at H&M, Target and Macy's. There was so much information and so many opinions out there about fashion, that at times, it was difficult to find any consensus, much less a trend. But here are my picks:

1) Hot hues. Bright color is a trend that we saw simultaneously on the red carpet (Emma Stone, top left, in that pink-and-red Giambattista Valli dress at the "Friends With Benefits" premiere) on the runways (at Jil Sander, 3.1 Philip Lim, Prabal Gurung, Roksanda Ilincic) and on the streets, or rather, the fields at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, where neon reigned supreme. And it's only going to get stronger for spring 2012.

2) Dip-dyed hair. Kate Bosworth, Katy Perry and Lauren Conrad are just a few of the celebs who sported rainbow-colored tips this year. But I knew it was officially a trend when the 10-year-old boy sitting next to me at Sally Hershberger was getting a (very expensive) blue streak put in his tresses. Only in L.A.

 10collage

3) Colored denim. Are you seeing a theme here? Skinny jeans didn't go anywhere this year. In fact, they were more popular than ever thanks to a widening range of color options available everywhere from J. Brand (above) to Forever 21.

4) Native accents. Fair Isle knits and Native American prints were splashed across everything from 1980s-era cropped tops, to chunky scarves, leggings and sweaters. If you're looking for the source, think back to the fall 2010 D&G runway (a Fair Isle fest as seen in the top right photo), Proenza Schouler's fall 2011 collection inspired by Santa Fe, and the music festivals.

5)  Women in tuxedos. Beyonce wore a sequin Dolce & Gabbana tux at the VMA Awards, and Kim Kardashian (who is not one to cover up) wore one to pose for her family Christmas card. Tory Burch custom made her first tuxedo for pal Kanye West to wear to the Costume Institute Gala in May, then debuted her own range of tuxedos for women. But really, on a woman or a man, tuxedos (or le smoking as Yves Saint Laurent called them) are timeless.

10collage3

6) Designer duds for a song. Missoni at Target (above right) and Versace at H&M, both out this year, were two of the most successful cheap chic collections of all time, as designers continued to go downmarket to increase the visibility of their brands and bring their style to a new generation of shoppers. The Missoni collection was a zippity zig-zag joy, and the Versace for H&M collection -- more Gianni than Donatella, more South Beach than Milano -- may have been the best Versace collection in years.

7) The new sobriety. Thank you Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, (above left) for bringing modesty and appropriateness back to the public forum with your demure shift dresses, tailored coats and classic pumps.

8) McQueen mania. It was the royal wedding of the century, and the bride wore Alexander McQueen. The bad boy British designer may have died last year, but his fashion label has never been more popular thanks to the stunning designs of artistic director Sarah Burton, who is carrying on his legacy. More than half a million people went to see "Savage Beauty," the retrospective exhibition of his work, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, kicking off a frenzy among museum curators the world over to come up with more fashion programming.

10collage2

9) Fur and feathers flying. From feather hair clips to feather earrings, ombre fur coats to oversized fur handbags, this year we fawned over fauna. Except in West Hollywood, where last month, the City Council passed a ban on fur sales that will take effect in 2013 -- and could push some high-end fashion retailers out of the neighborhood.

10) Shock and awe. It was a clash of tutus, animal prints and fried chicken necklaces, as Nicki Minaj (above left) and Lady Gaga (above right) tried to out-weird each other with wacky outfits this year. But fashion's tolerance for weird is high (how else to explain the fascination with Daphne Guinness?) and we loved it.

Fashion: Selena Gomez stylish as Justin Bieber fights paternity suit

Selena GomezAs her boyfriend Justin Bieber began fighting a paternity suit accusing him of fathering a fan's child out of wedlock, Selena Gomez put aside any upset she could be feeling to attend the "Stars" gala at the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday night. The affair benefited the Fulfillment Fund, which provides mentoring and scholarships for disadvantaged students to help them achieve a college education. Gomez wore a sparkling, one-sleeved cocktail dress with strappy sandals as she posed on the red carpet. "The Wizards of Waverly Place" star said she was there to support the evening's honoree,  Walt Disney Studios Chairman Rich Ross. [Society News LA]

Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton has been giving quite a few interviews lately, including one in the December issue of British Vogue, on sale Wednesday. In it, she talks about her memories of the late McQueen (he liked "Friends") and also about keeping Kate Middleton's wedding dress a secret for so many months. Even Burton's parents only saw the dress on the royal wedding day, and then they viewed it from a street in London, using a periscope to see over the crowd. [Telegraph]

Like many of the spring-summer 2012 women's collections being shown in Paris over the past week, Alexander McQueen's presentation Tuesday night was sweet and ladylike (despite the edgy masks covering the models' faces), as seen below. "It's all about femininity and womanhood," said creative director Sarah Burton (famous for, among other things, designing the breathtaking gown Kate Middleton wore when she married Prince William in April). The clothes were in soft, pearlescent colors and shaped to show off a woman's body, fitted in the bodice, nipped in at the waist.  [WWD]

Hells Angels sue Amazon over T-shirt

Helles1 When you're a small L.A. fashion house, the last thing you want up in your business is the Hells Angels. The Hells Angels aren't only a notorious outlaw motorcycle club. They're a trademark and a brand. And anyone who thinks otherwise has got it coming.

The latest victim of the Angels' storied litigious streak is Amazon.com and the small Hollywood fashion house, Wildfox, whose puritanically white T-shirts reading "My boyfriend's a Hells Angel" are being sold through a handful of online retailers. The flip side of the shirt depicts a pair of wings. Both sides infringe upon Hells Angels' trademarks of its name and skull-with-wings death head, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court San Francisco.

"We bring these lawsuits from time to time not just to punish but to educate," said Hells Angels' attorney Fritz Clapp. "Somebody thought erroneously that Hells Angels is a generic term."

Helss2 It isn't. Over the years, the Hells Angels have filed lawsuits against Disney, Marvel Comics and, last October, Alexander McQueen. Last fall, the club sued the designer fashion label along with retailers Saks Fifth Avenue and Zappos for selling items that illegally used the Hells Angels name and death head design in rings, clutches, purses, scarves and dresses. Within days, the offending items were removed from stores and the suit has since been "resolved to our satisfaction," Clapp said.

The T-shirts at the center of the current lawsuit were brought to Clapp's attention within the last 10 days, he said. Several members of the Hells Angels had "reported" them.

"Getting this stuff off the market is our highest priority," according to Clapp. "Hells Angels is a membership mark, and it denotes membership in the organization. Even the Hells Angels do not put it on T-shirts they sell to the public."

A call to the Amazon.com media hotline and an email to Wildfox had not been returned at the time of publication.

Wedding throwdown: Kim Kardashian vs. the royal wedding

Wedding

The Kardashian family could be considered America's own form of reality television royalty. Kim Kardashian first popped onto our radar as a socialite and the girl in that, ahem, steamy video, but it wasn't long before she and her family built an empire. Sure they don't actually have any royal privileges of any kind, but when it comes to throwing a wedding, or any sort of lavish affair, Kim is sure to get the royal treatment.

Kardashian married basketball star Kris Humphries on Saturday in Montecito in a wedding spectacle that by all accounts rivaled the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton earlier this year. Both high-profile couples went all out for their big days, but who did it better? It's time for a good old wedding throwdown.

The gown:

Kate Middleton walked down the aisle in a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen white silk gown with detailed Chantilly lace sleeves. This was a big moment for the Alexander McQueen line and its designer, as noted by our own Booth Moore. For the reception, Kate donned an ivory gown with diamante waist embellishment, also by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

Kim Kardashian wore three custom gowns by Vera Wang. The exact order is at the moment unclear but Us magazine reports that the first was an ivory ball gown that featured a full tulle skirt, basque waist and a bodice and train covered in hand-pieced Chantilly lace applique. The second was an ivory georgette mermaid gown with hand-pieced Chantilly lace applique on the bodice and a skirt with hand cut-organza petals and Chantilly lace motifs. For her final gown, Kim wore a bias-cut crepe back ivory satin gown with circle skirt and V-neck.

The jewels:

Kate Middleton sparkled in Queen Elizabeth II's jewels. She borrowed a 1936 Cartier tiara from the monarch for her big day.

Kardashian wore more than $10 million of exclusive Lorraine Schwartz jewels, including a diamond-encrusted headpiece. Kim and Kris also exhanged Lorraine Schwartz wedding bands.

The coverage:

The entire world got to watch the royal couple wed, with live feeds from major networks and a multitude of specials.

Kris and Kim decided to give their wedding top-secret status -- and to make money from it. The couple sold the rights to their wedding footage to E!, which produces Kim's show "Keeping Up With The Kardashians." Fans will have to wait until October (gasp!) to watch Kim and Kris walk down the aisle.

Major dough:

Usually when a couple gets married it involves major splurging. CBS' MoneyWatch.com reported that when Kate and Will got hitched, it cost the royal family an estimated $34 million, and that was after some serious budgeting.

It's no surprise that Kim has turned her star power into profit with her clothing store, clothing line and perfume line, but who would have thought she'd find a way to make money off her own wedding? According to Mogulite.com, Kim not only scored major wedding freebies, but also made some serious cash. She held the wedding at Google exec Eric Schmidt's house, received nearly a half a million dollars of free bubbly from Perrier-Jouet Champagne and wore a comped $20,000 Vera Wang wedding dress.

Here is a breakdown by the New York Post of Kardashian's estimated $17.9-million profit:

-- Two-part TV special: $15 million.
-- Sale of wedding photos to People: $2.5 million.
-- Sale of rights to engagement announcement to People: $300,000.
-- Sale of rights of bridal-shower photos to OK!: $100,000.
-- Paid to have the bachelorette party at Tao Las Vegas : $50,000.

The guest list:

Europe's royal elite, as well as celebrities such as David and Victoria Beckham and Elton John, joined a guest list of about 1,900 for the royal wedding, the Independent reported.

Serena Williams, Eva Longoria and Lindsay Lohan were among the 450 guests who attended the Kardashian-Humphries wedding, USA Today reported.

Who do you think did it better? Comment and let us know.

Alexander McQueen Cutting-edge fashion designer Alexander McQueen, who committed suicide in February 2010, left the equivalent of about $82,000 at current exhange rates in trust for his dogs Minter, Juice and Callum to ensure they'd be looked after for the rest of their lives. Frugal Fashion: William and Kate go cowboy chic on their overseas tour

CowboykatePrince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, might have finished their overseas tour of parts of Canada and California, but we're still buzzing. We just can't get enough of the duchess and her confident, elegant style.

The newlyweds are now old pros at dressing for public appearances. While in the U.S., Catherine wore a flowy Alexander McQueen gown to the BAFTA "Brits to Watch" gala, a hand-painted silver dress by Jenny Packham to a charity polo match in Santa Barbara and a white and navy ensemble to paint with kids at an art center in L.A.'s skid row. But who knew the royal couple would look so good when they went country in jeans and cowboy hats?

These outfits came out when Kate and William made an appearance at the BMO Centre in Calgary, Canada. The look was a far cry from something the duke and duchess would wear to tea with the queen, but it's difficult to watch a lively herd of livestock in heels.

William kicked off the Calgary Stampede in a blue and green tartan plaid shirt, a pair of blue jeans and boots, while Kate wore a pair of dark denim jeans, Temperley London rodeo shirt, boots and a silver buckled-belt. The couple stayed clear of the sun in matching crisp white cowboy hats.

To get Kate's look try a white blouse with a prairie feel like the French Connection vintage grace shirt (below, left) for $39.99 at Frenchconnection.com. For some country ruffles try the silk georgette blouse from Forever21.com for $24.80.

Kateshirts

For a rodeo, a nightclub or even a leisurely Sunday afternoon, there's no need to throw down a couple of hundred dollars for jeans. For a great pair of jeans under $100 try the Frances 18 low-rise boot cut jeans by Silver Jeans Co. for $75, Meltin Pot jeans from Yoox.com for $45 or the 1969 perfect boot cut jeans by Gap for $69.50.

Katejeans
For her accessories, Kate went the traditional western route with a bold silver-buckled belt and cowboy boots. Lasso the look with the Relic two-tone etched buckle belt from Kohls.com for $24 and the American Eagle Outfitters suede desert boot for $59.50.

Kateaccessories

The prince, looking more like a stylish Texas ranger in his rodeo gear, perfected the look of a modern cowboy. For a similar shirt, get the Polo Ralph Lauren slim custom-fit plaid sport shirt for $39.99 from LordandTaylor.com, American Eagle Outfitters plaid button down for $39.50, Cockpit navy blue plaid shirt for $44.99 from bluefly.com or the eco-conscious Swell the Josh Organic flannel shirt for $39.50. from Swell.com.
