It might have been New York Fashion Week’s biggest front row celebrity coup. Francisco Costa had not one but two Hollywood ‘it’ girls at his show, Emma Stone and Rooney Mara. Although truth be told, the darkly feminine clothes looked a lot more like Mara than Stone (whom Costa dressed in that stunning coral gown for the 2011 Golden Globes).

Costa worked a sculpted silhouette on dresses and coats in nubbly mohair wools. Some had funnel necks, others plunging necklines with boned bodices.

As beautifully made as these wool pieces were, they felt cold and overly constrained. More appealing were Costa’s shift dresses in shaved shearling with sheer silk insets, and slick black leather dresses and coats with pleated details. For evening, gowns embroidered with knotted silk had almost a chain mail look.
