Karl Lagerfeld presented the Chanel spring 2012 runway collection to a crowd of celebrity attendees during Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday in what fashion critic Booth Moore called ‘an ocean of delights.’

Among the audience, Alexa Chung made an appearance in a gray dress with balloon sleeves, Clemence Poésy wore an elegant midnight blue gown and French designer and former model Ines de la Fressange wore icy blue pants and a tailored black tuxedo blazer.

Among the best dressed were those wearing Chanel’s signature tweed designs: Anna Wintour in a gray coat and matching pencil skirt, for instance, and the very memorable Uma Thurman.

Thurman, who can next be seen in the films ‘Bel Ami,’ opposite ‘Twilight’s’ Robert Pattinson, and ‘Kill Bill: Vol. 3,’ attended the show in a full tweed ensemble. She wore a black tweed dress with braided detail and a gold and black colored tweed coat with fringe. She lightened up the heavy look with strappy black sandals, a loose but elegant up-do and sparkly stud earrings.

Thurman’s tweed pieces looked cozy against the show’s snow-white background. For a similar dress try the AGB dress, cardigan and belt ensemble for $89 from Macys.com, the Tahari ASL stretch tweed belted asymmetrical dress from Bluefly.com for $89, or the tweed dress from Mango.com for $77. If a complete tweed outfit seems a little too much, try the tall tweed blouson dress with a tweed skirt and silky top from Loft.com for $98.

For a chic tweed winter coat, get the Ani-Glam Meo jacket with neck embellishment from Chicos.com for $19.99 or the Jaclyn Smith women’s sweater tweed jacket from Kmart.com for $44.99. Each piece would look great over a dress like Thurman’s or with more casual attire, such as jeans and a white T-shirt.

One of my favorite frugal fashion tips is to spruce up an old coat with new buttons. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought a coat from a vintage shop, sewed on new buttons and completely transformed the coat. If you have an old tweed coat, or happen find one at a vintage shop, try replacing the buttons for an updated look that will take you well beyond the winter season.
