It’s no wonder he had a celebrity front row with everyone from Nicki Minaj to Amanda Seyfried. For stars who really want to make an entrance on the red carpet, Prabal Gurung is the man.

Gurung launched his collection in 2009, but it is in the last year that he has earned his place in the upper echelon of the New York fashion scene by creating clothes super-charged with sexual drama.

Where the fall 2011 collection was smoldering, the spring 2012 collection was smokin’ hot. The clothes were heavily engineered, with a focus on athletic-looking, graphic dresses with violet floral print silk and sheer tulle inserts revealing flashes of skin. Some were worn with leather harnesses. But the look was never harsh, thanks to romantic details such as flutter sleeves, flouncy hems, soft tulle petal and ostrich feather trims.

And if there was any doubt that Gurung has mad tailoring skills, it was gone after the first jacket came out. In black silk with sculpted shoulders and a graphic white faille lapel, it was paired with super-sexy silk track shorts and a pixilated violet floral button-down shirt. And yes, there apparently are women who are into the dressy short-shorts thing, at least among the flamingo-legged fashion set. In fact, I spotted several pairs of showgoers taking advantage of September’s balmy temps. For the rest of us, Gurung offered skinny, ankle zip trousers in colorful, Rorschach-like prints, or with grosgrain ribbon tuxedo stripes. (Though in truth, they didn’t look a whole lot more forgiving than the shorts!) There was also a handkerchief hem skirt in an abstract floral, worn with a white leather shell with floral laser cut details.

For evening, things heated up with model Karlie Kloss (Gurung’s star from last season, too) in a sexy-as-hell black halter gown with sheer tulle inserts at the hips. A similar gown in white, with scooped-out shoulders, tulle flutter sleeves, insets at the waist and a slit thigh-high, would be great on a modern bride. Hey, isn’t Jennifer Aniston pre-engaged?
