Charity T-shirt to benefit Vermont flood victims

As a Vermont to California transplant, I've watched in horror as the Green Mountain State's bridges, roads and homes have been battered by flood waters in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

While the the loss of life has, to date, been very small, the damage to infrastructure has been massive. There are major roads that are still impassable, and I've found myself wondering what I might be able to do for the 802 (yes, the entire state still has just one area code).

A few minutes ago, one wearable answer arrived in my inbox: a charity T-shirt with the words: "I'm With VT" emblazoned against an outline of the state. The maker, Rochester, Vt.-based Independent Vermont Clothing Co., has pledged all of the profits from sales of the $25 shirt (estimated to be about $15 a shirt) to Red Cross efforts to get Vermonters back on their feet.

The company, which was founded by two seventh-generation Vermonters Adam Blair (who designs the shirts) and his sister Sarah Durant, along with their mother Cheryl Harvey (herself a sixth-generation Vermonter). Blair said that since the charity T-shirt went live at about 9 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday, about 55 orders (many for multiple shirts) have been placed.

Blair said the shirts are available for online preorder now, and they're expected to print on September 15. "They're going to ship from New Hampshire so we won't have any problem with getting them delivered," Blair told The Times on the phone Tuesday. "You can tell people that the rest of the T-shirts at our site are available too -- but they just won't be shipping until after postal service resumes."
