The look in handbags for fall is clean without a lot of hardware, which may be why I’ve become so attached to a vintage Coach flap bag with a turn-lock closure that I bought for $55 at a flea market in New York City this spring.

We have Celine’s Phoebe Philo to thank for the trend, of course. She’s been pushing luxe minimalism on the runway for several seasons now, training our eye to appreciate unfussy coats and totes. But not everyone has the cash for the Celine Boston tote, the current fashion world fave, which can cost $1,800-$2,500 depending on the skin and color combination.

This leather tote from Zara is a chic substitute. At just $149, it’s sturdy and rich-looking, with plaited details on the handles, and a longer strap tucked inside in case you want to wear it over your shoulder. It’s unlined but has a cloth interior pouch, to help keep things organized. It comes in red, black or luggage brown at Zara stores.
