Makeup Bag: Designer Rachel Pally dishes on her beauty must-haves

L.A. designer Rachel Pally specializes in whipping jersey fabric into feminine, figure-flattering fashion. But she's also known around town for her chic personal style — which is heightened by her lovely hair and flawless skin. We asked Pally to spill the beans on her top-five favorite beauty products:

Dr. Hauschka Toned Day Cream, $39.95

"I love this cream because it's thick and substantial," said Pally, "and it gives me a sunny glow. Plus, I love that it's made of natural ingredients, and the subtle tone means that I don't have to wear makeup!"

Mode de Vie Karite Shea Butter Vanilla Lip Balm, $6.49

"My favorite of all time," Pally said. "I have tubes of it in all of my bags, in my car, in my desk at work....it smells amazing, and is so moisturizing. It's also great for dry patches."

Nars Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment in Angelique, $25 

"It gives the perfect amount of natural color, it's hydrating, and it has sunscreen in it — which is a necessity," said Pally, adding, "It's pretty much flawless, and comes in a slim little tube that's so very portable."

Nars eyeshadow in Bali, $23

"I use [the grayish-brown color] on my eyebrows to give them a darker, more defined look," said Pally.  "Most days, I go for a bold brow, mascara, blush and lip balm. That's my secret recipe to feel natural and refined in three minutes."

Redken Rough Paste, $14.39

"I'm not a girl who'll spend hours on my hair, but I think there are a few tricks you can do throughout the day that only take a little time and go a long way," said Pally. "I used to let my hair air-dry and hope for the best, but my hair stylist, Kristin Ess, advised me to put Redken Rough Paste at the roots. It gives a messy, big-hair lift that looks perfectly undone. Give it a little scrunch and you're ready to go."
