OK, OK, so a watch for Dad on Father’s Day may seem as trite as a tie, but a watch is really practical and doesn’t have to be expensive (well, depending on the kind of guy he is). Here are a few options for Dad, whether he’s strait-laced and preppy or loves a little bling.

For the non-watch wearing dad, the Sentry from Nixon (above left) is a nice, minimal and sleek choice that’s really understated and does just the basics. He doesn’t have to worry about all the bells and whistles with this watch, and the monochromatic black band and face make it really subtle, while antique copper hardware gives it just enough style and sophistication so it can be worn with jeans and a T-shirt or a business casual look, $190 at www.barneys.com.

A simple style from Burberry (above right) has a cream face and brown leather band that would be a great option for a first-timer. Again -– no major bells and whistles for Dad to deal with, plus the stainless steel detail gives it a nice, clean finish that’s slightly dressier than the Nixon watch, $295 at www.bloomingdales.com

The retro-loving dad will adore the Timex stainless steel reissue watch (directly above) that looks a bit like a stopwatch. The design is bold, graphic and statement-making and adds a little style to his plaid button downs and khakis or, uh, Hawaiian shirts and Tommy Bahama slacks. $125 at www.bloomingdales.com

Also from Timex, but an exclusive style to J Crew is the vintage field army watch (left), based on a 1940s military style. The olive-colored nylon strap makes it less precious than most watches, so it’s perfect for the dad who spends hours tinkering in the garage, $150 at www.jcrew.com

On the other end of the spectrum is the dad who’s the watch aficionado, the guy who loves to wear something cool, classic and collectible and appreciates heritage and, well, luxury. This mesh-band watch from IWC Schaffhausen’s latest Portofino collection (right) is a stunner that’s made for the man who has his shirts custom made or loves a nice buttery leather driving moc. $5,200 at IWC Schaffhausen, Beverly Hills.
