Mother's Day Gifts: The best-dressed table

May 5, 2011 |  6:34 am

There are only a few days of shopping time left till Mother's Day (Sunday), so each day until then, we're sharing some ideas that might inspire your gift-giving:

Give mom’s table a clean, sculptural (and functional) centerpiece in the form of a pastry/cheese dome by local glassblower Joe Cariati. Each one-of-a-kind cloche and plate is hand-signed and handmade, using a Venetian glassblowing technique. Mom can even use these artisanal vessels in a bedroom or bathroom to display a to-die-for necklace or personal fragrance collection. (Choose from one of six colors, from $545 at www.joecariati.com)

Or give her a standing reservation at the most stylish table in town, right in her very own dining room, when it’s decked out with Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ chic new Dressed collection of tabletop, glassware and flatware for Alessi. With scalloped edges and ornate relief decoration, the collection has elegant, feminine appeal. Yet, in keeping with the aesthetic of the renowned Dutch design group Droog (of which Wanders was an original member), there’s also a playful twist: The white porcelain cups and stainless cutlery appear plain, but are surprisingly textured on the flip slide, as a fun little pick-me up. The extensive collection includes stainless flatware, serving utensils, tray and coasters; four styles of crystal glasses; and white porcelain dinnerware and serving dishes. (From $9 for a spoon to $1,020 for a 70-piece flatwear set at alessi-shop.com, unicahome.com or call [310] 276-7096.)
