Eek, we’re losing an hour! Don’t forget to shift the clock forward 60 minutes come Sunday at 2 a.m. And you can blame it all on Benjamin Franklin — he’s the guy responsible for the creation of daylight saving time. Franklin decided that a switch of the clock would allow us to make the best use of daylight hours … and the rest is history. According to law, states can opt out (Hawaii and Arizona do). But for those of us affected by the time change, we say, why not make it something to celebrate? For the rest of the week, we’ll be suggesting some gift ideas inspired by daylight saving time.

To send a wake-up call to friends who might be dragging after that missed 60 minutes of sleep, give a jolt of Day-Glo for the home or wrist as a little post-daylight saving pick-me-up. Though time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’ into the future, it takes exactly that lost 60 minutes for the sand to travel through this hourglass’ aperture ($29.95 at www.zgallerie.com). We like this unplugged approach, plus the pop of color wakes up any neutral room.

And we love these unisex fluoro diving watches by new brand Skywatch that are Swiss-made, with premium Italian sailcloth straps lined in nubuck leather. (In two sizes, 38 millimeters or 44 millimeters, starting at $295 at www.skywatchsite.com or Tourneau stores, (800) 348-3332 [Updated at 4:19 PM 03/10/2011 for the record: An earlier version of this post listed a local Los Angeles Tourneau store number (310) 553-8463.] They’re also water-resistant to 100 meters (in case we stumble into a very, very deep puddle as a result of our sleep deprivation). Quality details include fine Swiss quartz movement, a uni-directional rotating bezel and Super LumiNova premium photo luminescent graphics … all for a super-affordable price. And they aren’t just for thrill-seekers. For a good time, we suggest pairing this sporty neon watch with a sultry black lace dress.
