Karla Fox didn’t take the traditional route to her career in jewelry design. The Los Angeles native has done stints as a private investigator, a pilot of small airplanes and an aviation accident investigator.

But then her eponymous collection isn’t exactly typical. Fox uses real-world (and often retro) objects as inspiration to craft kitschy rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces -- mainly in white and yellow gold -- that feel playful but refined.

She dived into her current career at the urging of her daughters, who share her passion for quirky jewelry that mirrors everyday objects. Now Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jack Nicholson are among Fox’s clients.

Some of our favorite pieces from the collection include the saucy 18-karat white gold Handcuff bracelet ($4,850, above); the gold-and-garnet Heart and Arrow ring, ($1,275, left); and a pair of 14-karat yellow gold earrings in the shape of throwing jacks ($675).

Sweet and ever-so-slightly subversive, the baubles would hit the sartorial spot with any fashion-forward jewelry lover.
