For me, one of the signature sounds of the Christmas season has always been the clanging hand bells that signify the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Christmas Campaign is in full swing.

On Thursday, I ran across a different (and much quieter) way to support the efforts of the organization -- buying a pair of pants.

Called the Detroit 874 Work Pant, the limited-edition (only 5,000 pairs are available) version of Dickies hard-wearing work trousers are a 65/35 wrinkle-resistant poly/cotton navy twill with red contrast stitching and pocket bags with a special ‘874’ logo appliqued above the back pocket and printed in the waistband lining.

Dickies debuted the $50 pants in late September with a donation of $25,000 and 5,000 pairs of 874 work pants to the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit, along with a pledge to donate an additional pair to go to workers in need for every pair of the limited-run pants it sells.

And, if you’re placing an order for other Dickies products through their website, simply adding a pair of the Detroit 874s to it will earn you free standard shipping on the whole order.

This holiday season, what could be a better present for the hard-working man in your life than a pair of work pants that’s working twice as hard -- and for a good cause to boot?

Of course I’m kind of disappointed the pants aren’t bell bottoms -- but there’s always next year.
