Say it with me: Van Halen cashmere. The surname — synonymous with ‘80s hard rock — and the luxury textile sound deliciously odd together, don’t they?

But the pairing is a reality. L.A.-based interior designer and real estate developer Kelly Van Halen, ex-wife of drummer Alex Van Halen, has just launched a line of cashmere travel blankets available exclusively at Fred Segal.

The $425 blankets, which come in their own squared-off silk-lined cases, are made from a ridiculously soft 2-ply cashmere and measure 4 feet by 6 feet. Best of all, the throw can double as a deluxe wrap when you arrive at your destination.

‘After many years of extensive travel, I was aware of the need for certain items that made traveling more comfortable,’ Van Halen said. ‘I designed the cashmere travel blanket for that reason — who wants to use an airline blanket when you can bring your own fabulous cashmere travel blanket?’

Van Halen started experimenting with cashmere in her eponymously named baby and children’s collection, which launched in April, and she’s currently finalizing the design of cashmere robes for kiddos and grownups for a spring 2011 launch.

‘Everything I do is about comfort, good design and quality,’ said the former model and actress, ‘especially today when there seems to be so many disposable items that look good but just don’t last. ... A little luxury goes a long way.’
