NYFW: On your mark!

I am in New York a little earlier than usual for the spring 2011 fashion shows because I didn’t want to miss “Fashion’s Night Out -- The Show” at Lincoln Center.

Spearheaded by Vogue, Tuesday’s runway show, which is open to the public and features fall styles in stores now, is a culmination of fashion’s seismic shift toward accessibility, which I first wrote about last summer in our ‘Future of Fashion’ series.

The 3,000 tickets sold out in just four hours, but the show will be webcast live from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. EST at cbs.com. It is being taped for broadcast on CBS on Sept. 14 (Neil Patrick Harris will host).

The event is bringing the runway to the public in a big way, and I can’t wait to see what the reaction is and what the viewership numbers are on the Web and on TV.

As for Fashion’s Night Out itself, which is Friday, I’m bummed to be missing all the great events in Los Angeles (listed here), beginning with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s kickoff at the Beverly Center.

But I am looking forward to running around New York, where there are an unreasonable number of great events planned. In a dream world, I would:

--Swing by the CH Carolina Herrera store opening and get drawn in caricature by artist Robert Risko.

--Pick up a custom-made Lanvin bingo board at the Madison Avenue boutique.

--Custom-make my own Chanel ballet flats on 57th Street.

--Check out the dog fashion show at Bergdorf Goodman (Monique Lhuillier is one of the judges).

--Stop at Barneys to sniff Daphne Guinness’ new perfume, Daphne, and see Jonathan Adler “throwing” at his potter’s wheel.

--Say “hello” to Nicolas Ghesquiere and take in the Cindy Sherman photographs at the Balenciaga boutique on 22nd Street.

--Take a picture with Vinny from “Jersey Shore” at the C.O. Bigelow apothecary downtown (he will be sharing grooming tips).

--Catch the Janelle Monae performance at Ralph Lauren’s event and the Bryan Adams performance at the Calvin Klein event.

--Finish off by checking out the ‘Non-fashion People’s Fashion’s Night Out’ event with Vena Cava and Partner & Spade, with one-of-a-kind pieces created by non-fashion insiders, including elephants, a wallpaper designer, a candle maker, an insurance claim adjuster and a board game designer.

It’s going to be a brisk evening, that’s for sure!

As for Fashion Week itself, I’m looking forward to the new venue at Lincoln Center, to seeing Michael Bastian’s first women’s collection for Gant and Tommy Hilfiger’s 25th-anniversary show. I would love to check out Marc Jacobs’ new bookstore, Bookmarc, in the West Village. And WWD is reporting that Tom Ford may show a few women’s looks -- in advance of his official launch for fall -- over cocktails.
