Mercedes-Benz may have a lock on sponsorship of the New York Fashion Week shows at Lincoln Center, but another German automobile is putting its stamp on Fashion’s Night Out here, with Volkswagen signing on as the official car sponsor for the event -- and offering up a fleet of its 2011 Jettas to ferry harried shoppers through the mayhem in Manhattan.

We’re told that if a shopper brandishes a receipt from a participating FNO retailer, one of the cars -- identified by the Volkswagen Style Express signage and the FNO logo -- will deliver them between the following two areas of the city free of charge.

So, if you’re planning on being in the Big Apple for the big night, you can catch a car one of two places:

-- In Midtown on 50th Street between 5th and 6th avenues on the north side of Rockefeller Center and just down the block from Saks Fifth Avenue. This route runs downtown to

-- SoHo, on Greene Street between Prince and Spring streets.

And frenzied shoppers are apparently not the only ones getting a free ride for Fashion’s Night Out; we’re told that among the fashion designers who plan to be ferried from one personal appearance or event to another on Friday include Nanette Lepore, Jason Wu, Narciso Rodriguez, Bradley Bayou, Marc Bouwer and Rebecca Minkoff.

Perhaps it’ll be a nice fit. After all, the automaker’s name does translate from German as ‘people’s car.’
