Adding some texture and a few waves in your hair may not seem like a big deal to most people, but when you’re Kim Kardashian and known for your flawless face and super polished and silky hair, even the tiniest amount of messiness makes a difference.

For her Emmy look, Kardashian’s longtime hair stylist, Clyde Haygood, gave the reality star a “messy” chignon to complement her white goddess inspired gown.

“Kim is a really polished girl, she doesn’t usually go for messy hair,” Haygood says. To achieve the right balance between romantically messy and pulled together, Haygood added silky texture to her hair so there were no fuzzy or falling down tendrils, but rather full bodied waves and a clean finish. He started by adding a generous amount of Tresseme 24 Hour Body Foaming mousse to Kardashian’s wet hair and then set it in a lot of little pin curls to get shape, bend and ripple into her hair. Using a diffuser, he blew dry the hair and then took out all the clips.

To get her long locks up, Haygood pinned up the interior of her hair into a sculptural shape (which was also supported by several Lorraine Schwartz jeweled clips in the back) that still showed off some of the waves that framed her face. He rolled the outer parts of the hair in his hand to make them roll back and take on a ropey texture. He pinned those back into the rest of the hair for a finale that he says has “tons of texture, but without being fuzzy looking or falling out.”
