‘Glee’s’ Chris Colfer: Alexander McQueen-inspired shoes? Not such a ‘Bad Romance’

When news broke that Fox’s Tuesday night singing sensation ‘Glee’ was going to do an episode with Lady Gaga songs, you just knew the fashions were going to be sublime. And then came news that our beloved Kurt (actor Chris Colfer) was going to the lucky one to work the ‘Bad Romance’ parody -- complete with the 10-inch heels a la the Alexander McQueen Armadillos Gaga donned for her video.

While Colfer’s size-11 foot was a bit too big for an actual McQueen, he tells us via e-mail that the ‘Glee’ wardrobe department went the DIY-route (a bit more realistic, we think. We’re guessing his character, a middle-class Ohio teen, probably would have had to try a similar maneuver).

‘[They] actually went out and bought huge, bright, red hooker-boots from a cross-dressing store on Hollywood Boulevard, cut them down, and then covered them with the fabric and jewels you see on the show,’ he said.

But walking and dancing in them? This is no small, um, feat, as professional models actually refused to wear the (now-late) designer’s shoes when he showed them off on his Spring-Summer 2010 runway in Paris. Would they really let an actor-dancer on a hit TV show walk in this version? Yep.

‘I learned that 10-inch platform stiletto heels are never easy,’ Colfer writes. ‘It was one of the biggest challenges I’ve had on the show. Besides a strategic sock combination and a few Doctor Scholls pads, there wasn’t much alteration. There is some interesting footage of me wearing my ‘training heels’ in rehearsal. It was a lot like sword fighting, it really hurt at first to learn but the ending result looked so cool that it was all worth it. I was so terrified I’d fall and break my ankle, every time I felt myself falling I’d just go with it and land on another part of my body, saving my feet.’

Colfer says fans can see proof of his moves during the now-touring Glee concert, adding ‘I haven’t fallen yet, but when I do I’m looking forward to it becoming a YouTube sensation.’

Ah, the lengths one will go for art.
