Now that spring is here, I’m ready to give up the beige and gray nail polish I’ve been wearing for the cold weather months, and bring on the brights. My new obsession is Chanel’s Nouvelle Vague shade, which looks excellent on the toes.

Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) is both the name of the stylistic French film movement of the 1950s and 60s, and the French musical collective famous now for reinterpreting familiar songs by Blondie, Talking Heads and others in bossa nova, reggae and bluegrass style. But to me the shade has an 1980s vibe, especially next to the Mistral coral and Riviera pink polishes that are also part of Chanel’s Les Pop-Ups summer cosmetics collection.

It also resembles Sky blue, the nail color that started it all for Hard Candy back in 1995, only Nouvelle Vague’s faint shimmer keeps it from being too juvenile. My sister may have described it best, ‘It’s like wearing turquoise jewelry on your nails.’
