Fashion’s Night Out — the multi-city event invented to boost the slumping retail industry — will be the subject of a one-hour prime-time special on CBS, airing Sept. 15 at 8 p.m.

Now in its second year, the annual event was launched in 2009 by Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and NYC & Company in response to the striking decline in fashion retail sales sparked by the recession.

The TV special will focus on the second year of Fashion’s Night Out (scheduled for Sept. 10), taking viewers behind the scenes of its planning and preparation, then documenting the night itself in various cities around the world. Cameras will follow celebrities, designers, editors and retailers — though the organization’s not naming names yet. The special also will focus on a handful of undersung professionals in the fashion industry, including salespeople and design staff.

Last September, Fashion’s Night Out was staged in 13 different cities (including L.A.). In New York, where the organization is based, more than 800 stores in the five boroughs took part in the event — and celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler performed.
