Unholy Matrimony designer Brett Westfall, who helmed the Comme des Garcons Guerrilla store downtown during its yearlong run, has a new place to hang his hat.
The designer is poised to open Case Study Unholy Matrimony, a retail-art-performance space at 138-140 N. La Brea Ave. on Jan. 30.

The 2,100-square-foot location, just two doors down from American Rag Cie, is a collaboration between Unholy Matrimony and Orange County-based retailer Amir Gharavi, who owns the designer boutique Anastasia in Laguna Beach. (Case Study is Gharavi’s brand.)

The outpost will stock Unholy Matrimony, Undercover, Kris Van Asche, Sigi, Maison Martin Margiela, Peachoo & Krejberg, Darcy Miro, Hussein Chalayan, Sonia Boyajian, Junya Watanabe and Manish Arora, among others.

“Essentially, it’s a retail boutique, but it’s more than that,” Westfall said. “I wanted to make an institution of conceptual art. When you go into any retail boutique, no matter how awesome it is, it only takes a few minutes to look at the clothes and then basically leave. But clothes are just a part of it when it comes to Unholy Matrimony. It’s based on consensual art -- living what you make, what you create.”

The space will host fine art shows -- beginning with “Voice of Nature,” paintings and other works by Westfall and fellow L.A. designer, KZO’s Joel Knoernschild -- along with films and the occasional band. It will also serve as the new headquarters for Unholy Matrimony, featuring an in-house showroom in back.
“It’s just something new,” Westfall said. “Everything’s changing. I think the economy and the recession -- it’s bringing everyone down to the same level. For the indie designers, it’s giving [us] more opportunity to do more stuff, because more people are willing to work with you.”

The partners will kick off the space with a party on Jan. 30 from 6 to 10 p.m., which will include a performance by Barnacle, Westfall and Knoernschild’s instrumental band that, according to Westfall, is “kind of a mix of Beethoven and metal.’ We can’t wait.
