‘An Education’ star and Golden Globe nominee Carey Mulligan gave everyone on the red carpet a lesson in understated award show style, wearing a midnight blue, lace Nina Ricci dress and vintage bracelet as a headband in her cropped gamine hair.

Her subtle makeup balanced out the deep dramatic color of her gown, playing up her fresh complexion and delicate features.

Mulligan’s makeup artist Gregory Arlt gave us the scoop on how he played up her English rose beauty.

‘I envisioned this English rose being swept in from the country side to the Golden Globes,’ Arlt says. He flushed her cheeks with a color from MAC called Well Dressed -- a cool, blue-ish pink with a hint of shimmer for luminosity. Arlt gave her eyes what he called a ‘sheer smokey’ eye, with a palette of silvery grays including a color called Satin Taupe, also from MAC. ‘I added a little gray eyeliner to the very outer edges of the eye. I didn’t want anyone to see where things started and stopped on her face,’ he says. ‘There’s no need for smoke and mirrors with her. It’s just pure, effortless beauty.’

Arlt was inspired by her porcelain complexion to create a custom lip color. ‘I wanted her to have that just bitten lip stain.’ He mixed a lip conditioner with tiny drops of rose and mint oil and small shavings of burgundy, crimson and black lipstick to get a berry stain that pops out from her fair skin. For those of us who don’t have the luxury of custom colors, Arlt recommends a shade of MAC lip tint called Plum Perfect.
