Mark your calendars, fashion and movie fans

As December wanes, we look ahead. What could excite us in 2010?

If you love fashion and you love film, plan right now to go to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Museum and Galleries' exhibition of costume design. This is FIDM's 18th annual show honoring the skill and talent of costume designers.

More than 100 costumes from 20-plus movies released in 2009 will be displayed, including outfits from "Nine" (by Colleen Atwood) and gowns from "The Young Victoria" (by Sandy Powell). Also on view: The exquisite costumes by last year's Oscar winner for costume design (Michael O'Connor, for "The Duchess.")

The exhibition doesn't open till Feb. 9, which just gives you time to go see more of this year's movies before you hit the museum. It runs through April 7, and will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission is free. Group tours are available for a fee. Call (213) 623-5821 for more info.

The FIDM Museum and Galleries are at 919 S. Grand Ave. in downtown Los Angeles.

Vivacious and evocative, telling and scintillating these costumes and ruminescents of personal image delight the senses and make some of these movies actually worth watching. Isn't the dryish and simple humor in a film like Sherlock Holmes lost on someone who actually appreciated the literature-rich cunning wit and plays on words of Sir Doyle? Storylines of Hollywood films are so pitiful these days we need something firm to actually make us want to spend a Saturday night in the theater. These films rely on image, costuming, and cinematography to make them actually worth our time in the first place because otherwise I'd rather just watch a fashion show.
