No longer just fleece vests and frumpy cords, Lands’ End has bumped up its prepster-meets-outdoorsman offerings and launched a contemporary collection called Canvas.

When perusing the line of slouchy button-downs half-tucked into straight-leg jeans and taxi cab-yellow car coats layered over shawl-neck sweaters and dark-wash jeans, one can’t help but think of J. Crew and the Gap for that effortless mix of elegant and rugged clothing and accessories. But Canvas is more understated (definitely not as eclectic as J. Crew), while still stylish.

Instead of down puffer vests and padded winter coats, they have tan, slim-cut trench coats and vivid yellow pea coats that feel classic, but not boring. Prices aren’t bad either. A trench is $199 and the pea coat is $79.

Accessories consist of classic white Tretorn sneakers and Wellies, but it’s the chic canvas and leather high heel shoes for $125 that make you look twice and realize that Lands’ End might be on to something really good.
