Do I wear my Ugg boots to this Ugg event, or not? I kinda don’t want to be the girl who shows up at the concert wearing the band’s T-shirt. But it’s chilly in L.A. one night earlier this week, and the groovy Fred Segal Feet courtyard on Melrose is being turned into a chic outdoor venue. So, boots snugly on, I arrive and spot the main attraction. Folks have gathered around a workshop from Fresh Pressed featuring Studio Number One’s artwork. Both have collaborated with Ugg Australia, creating a one-of-a-kind stencil to be screen-printed on boots. Very cool, because the person behind Studio Number One is Shepard Fairey---the artist who did the famous Barack Obama “Hope” posters.

In keeping with the Ugg’s Native American/tribal theme for next season, the pattern looks like an intricate, cascading feather. This part of the stencil is pressed on the sides of the boot. You can choose from metallic silver, copper or matte chocolate brown.

I was pretty jealous of the 250-plus people whose footwear was going to be inked up. Especially since I’d already fallen in love with the gray Classic Talls printed with silver. They also seemed to be one of the most popular styles, so I wasn’t alone. And all this was free with the purchase of a pair of boots. Not too shabby. What’s neat is that 20% of all proceeds on any boot bought from Fred Segal Feet goes to the Surfrider Foundation West Los Angeles/Malibu Chapter.

Moseying into the shop to peruse Ugg Australia’s collection, I bumped into Miss California, Nicole Johnson. We chatted as she tried on the latest in the Ugg boot pantheon--the Yoga style--and those fab gray Classic Talls. She told me her reason for coming was the Surfrider Foundation, which supports the oceans and beaches of California. She also gushed about her love for Ugg boots. “If I could, I’d wear them every day, but I’m supposed to be in heels. I even take them to pageants. I own four pairs, but after tonight I’ll own six.”
