It’s October, a.ka. Los Angeles Fashion Month

Welcome to October in Los Angeles, where the concept of fashion week as it exists in cities like Milan, Paris, New York and London has been folded, spindled and mutilated into a month-long series of fashion-themed installations, events – and even a Halloween party -- punctuated by the occasional old-school runway show. Charitable causes abound, Hollywood studios are the new tents (while we aren’t exactly taking credit for it, we did suggest just that in last year’s Fantasy Fashion Week story) and there’s more partnering up than a ‘70s key party.As in past seasons, most remain invite-only affairs geared toward the media and buyers, although a few are selling tickets to the fashion-loving public.

Among the events:

October 13-16 Downtown Los Angeles Fashion Week

None other than Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa himself has thrown his weight behind this hybrid event -- a mix of presentations, runway shows and mixers -- back for a sophomore season. This time around, it will include a handful of runway shows and presentations from the likes of Louis Verdad (showing his Louver Collection), Eduardo Lucero, and Oliver Tolentino, as well as a showcase of up-and-coming Israeli designers dubbed Mode Israel. Tickets are available to the public for the opening and closing events: The Fashion Angel Awards emerging designer show featuring a yet-to-be-announced designer (that name will be announced on Oct. 6) and hosted by the city of Los Angeles and the Department of Cultural Affairs on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m., and a runway show of vintage couture pieces produced by Elizabeth Mason (she of the Paper Bag Princess) and inspired by the recent documentary “Valentino, the Last Emperor” on Oct. 15 at 9 p.m., (a portion of the proceeds will benefit MOCA).

Oct. 16 Passion ... Revealed! This new event, comprising primarily Filipino designers and artists, is unspooling at the former St. Vibiana’s cathedral in downtown Los Angeles and is set to showcase the spring/summer 2010 collections of Alexis Monsanto, Furne Oné, and Philip Rodriguez. (Organizers tell us a portion of ticket sales and 100% of raffle sales from the event will go to benefit victims of the recent typhoon in the Philippines.)

Oct. 16-18 L.A. Fashion Weekend

A handful of invite-only runway shows scheduled for three evenings at Sunset Gower Studios and organized by Mikey Koffman and Hope Reiners of the Gallery Los Angeles. The lineup to date includes Division-E, Raw 7 and Tavik Swimwear.

Oct. 17 Kevan Hall

Hall continues to show as a fashion week of one, and this season he’s presenting his spring 2010 collection to an invite-only crowd on the Universal Studios back lot amid a collection of new Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and Porsche automobiles (the evening is sponsored by the Rusnak Auto Group).

Oct. 22, Rodeo Drive Walk of Style

As we reported in August, the late Princess Grace of Monaco and French jewelry house Cartier will be commemorated with sidewalk plaques on the retail thoroughfare, and you can be there -- if you’ve got at least $300 to plunk down (which will also get you into the post-ceremony reception). It’s for a good cause, though, benefiting the Princess Grace Foundation-USA and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

Oct. 22-25, BOXeight

This season BOXeight is thinking out of the box (does that make them just ‘eight’?) by partnering with L.A. Models to stage a series of presentations that organizer Peter Gurnz describes as ‘fashion installations.’

‘We’re kind of bringing the audience backstage,” he told us, with hair and makeup artists, stylists and photographers milling about BOXeight’s downtown space and mingling with invite-only guests. (Though Gurnz says there’s a chance things will open to a wider audience outside of the 6 to 10 p.m. schedule each day). Gurnz hopes for somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 to 24 labels to participate, and name-dropped Skingraft, Elmer Ave and “Project Runway” Season 5 contestant Jerell Scott as likely participants.

Oct. 29-31, Rock Fashion Week L.A

Oct. 29, Gen Art’s “Fresh Faces in Fashion”

Now that Gen Art and Rock Media have merged, the former’s signature ‘Fresh Faces’ event is slated to open the latter’s three-day inaugural Rock Fashion Week L.A. at Paramount Studios. This season, ‘Fresh

Faces’ is set to include womenswear labels Leyendecker, Seneca Rising and Rory Beca, menswear line MG Black and a special showcase for “Fresh Faces” alum Alicia Lawhon, a wardrobe stylist and costume designer who will be debuting her new line Reclaimed in L.A.Limited tickets (which include a pre-reception cocktail party, the runway show and an after-party) are available to the public for this night only. Oct. 30-31, Rock Fashion Week LA Runway Shows

The roster for the invite-only runway shows still hasn’t been announced (organizers tell us that the lineup should come next week), but we’ve been told that the whole thing is expected to culminate in a huge Saturday night Halloween bash on the Paramount Studios lot.

Then the stylish set can hang up their stilettos and hibernate for the next few months -- except for those who want to catch the start of Jared Gold’s Amtrak-sponsored Fashion Renegade Tour of the American West (which we told you about in our ‘Future of Fashion’ package last month). That traveling circus of style is scheduled to pull out of Union Station the morning of Nov. 3 and hit six cities before ending in Las Vegas in early December.

Forget the car sponsorships, it looks like what L.A.’s fractured fashion scene really needs is a partnership with NoDoz.
