The universe of NBA-licensed merchandise expands once again -- just in time for the 2009/2010 season, which officially tips off next week.

This time, it’s 2-in-1 layered long-sleeve T-shirts for kids (made by L.A.-based Junkfood Clothing, by the way), emblazoned with the retro-flavored Hardwood Classics logos of 11 teams, including the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers.

The cotton/polyester blend T-shirts, which rolled out Oct. 1, will be available in kids’ sizes S-XXL (4-16) for $22.50 online at gap.com or exclusively at GapKids retail stores nationwide through spring (including locally the Grove at Farmers Market, Century City, Westside Pavilion and Santa Monica locations).

To me the faux layered look feels a bit contrived for the tween scene, and slapping a vintage logo on kids’ clothing kind of destroys the whole illusion that’s at the heart of weathered, worn-looking retro-wear.

That being said, of all the teams represented, you have to admit the Lakers T has the most character of all -- a purple design on yellow (uh, make that ‘Forum blue’ on gold) depicting two thumbs pointed back to the wearer and the declaration: ‘This kid loves the Lakers!’ I call that consummate toddler swagger.

And, for that alone, I give it two thumbs up.
