In Saturday’s paper, Chris Erskine, one of my compatriots here on the second floor of the Los Angeles Times building, told the touching tale of how he submitted to the indignity of a pedicure (his first and last apparently) for the sake of father-daughter bonding.

The same day his column ran, I was at Lena’s nail salon on Fairfax Avenue getting a manicure, a pedicure and getting my brows done -- right in the front window. (It looked kind of like the photo above.) As I sat in a chair flipping through a magazine, I heard another client remark to my bride that she was inspired enough by my presence that she’d try to convince her own husband to accompany her next time.

Since Chris and I are only a few desks removed from each other but apparently planets apart on pedicure protocol, I thought it might be worth putting it to the readers. So here it is: Is getting a pedicure a violation of the unwritten laws of masculinity? Is it ‘conduct unbecoming’ of a gentleman? Fire away and I’ll tally the responses. To make it interesting, let’s say the winner gets a prize from the loser.

A gift certificate for a pedicure perhaps?
